Training the Disney Photographers

RumblyTummy -

Well, as far as my post goes, at least, I do disagree with you.

For our overall wedding pictures, we actually WANTED to go with Disney photography originally, as we figured it would be easier to let Disney handle it all. But we had major issues with how very MUCH more the digital images cost than any outside photographer. And we were doing an Escape wedding - budget was very much an issue for us. We were willing to add extra hours for the photographer, because we knew we were going to need it, but when we tried to talk to Disney about all of what we wanted and felt was reasonable, they were extremely inflexible. We didn't get a good feeling for what we could expect in a photographer at all. And they were completely inflexible on the prices, even when we told them we would be willing to give up the album and prints altogether to get the digital images.

So, we went with an outside photographer. Now, from things I'm reading on here, they have changed things. The way they have changed it now sounds at least closer to what we were asking for last year at this time. So it does sound like they were listening - maybe they were starting to lose a lot of business to outside vendors, and most were giving the same reasons we were.

And as far as our MK shoot - I never compared it to anything but other MK shoots. And compared to others, ours was horrible. Most of the shots he took, he took one or at most two of, so he didn't bother to get the array of colors with the castle. And in any one of them, if one of us happened to blink, move, make a funny face, or whatever, oh well, that's what we got. He took shots with things in the shot that shouldn't have been there. We got very few backgrounds. We had shadows across our faces in quite a few of the shots. Not to mention the "horror style" balcony shots, which were taken at an angle from below, so you can't really see our faces, instead of looking like they were taken from straight on, which is normal. And after having us climb up in the balcony (which is where you get the dirtiest during the shoot BTW) he only took 3 pictures! Didn't even take any of us kissing while up there. And we had no way of telling how many he was taking while we were up there.

And we were subjected to a barrage of questions about why we chose an outside photographer, why we should have picked Disney, why certain of the "favored" outside photographers were way overrated, etc., the entire time.

And as I mentioned before, he was sick. He said he had ulcers. Well, whatever the cause, doesn't really matter. As I said, I would normally have sympathy for someone being sick. But when someone's paying that much for a photo session, it isn't right to let being sick affect the work, regardless of the reason. He was stopping to just kind of stand and rest for a few minutes all through the session. And in the middle of it, he disappeared off to the bathroom for over 20 minutes. But we still had a hard limit of when we had to be out of the park. So our session was shortchanged.

None of this has to do with style or comparing to other photographers. This has to do with basic professional photography skills and basic professionalism.

And when we expressed all this to Disney, we were told they didn't really see any problems with our pictures. They even tried to tell us that ALL the balcony shots get shot at an angle like ours, because there is no way to get a straight on shot of the faces like we were talking about, despite the fact that every single other MK shoot I've seen has had perfectly angled balcony shots. And the concessions they were offering were next to nothing. Even a reshoot - for us, figuring in the extra costs a reshoot would end up costing us, we can't justify it.

Mind you, I'm not necessarily trying to scare anyone away from doing an MK shoot. Believe me - I hated paying how much we did, and would never have considered it if I didn't think the pictures would be worth it. And based on what I'd seen, I thought they would be. Most MK shoots are absolutely stunning, and while rather expensive, if it's what you really want, in the end, I'm sure you don't regret paying the money.

But when you pay that much and get treated the way we did, and get the kind of pictures we did - pictures I feel most amateurs could have done a better job taking - then you feel Disney has a responsibility to do something about it to make it right. And I also want others to be aware, so they are at least going into this with their eyes open. I don't know if there's anything they can do to keep this from happening to them. But me... well, if I could go back and do anything over, I think I would have insisted that we call and complain immediately - the day after the wedding - about the way he acted, the shortness of our session, etc. Maybe we could have gotten them to show us the pictures immediately, and then gotten the reshoot done while we were still down there, and gotten them to pay for doing my hair and makeup again, or gotten them to have Disney people do it.

I don't have much to say on this subject except I just got home from my DFTW and everything was great. We had Ty as our photographer and we thought he was absolutely amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better photographer. Our pictures turned out beautifully and Ty was so friendly. I just thought I would post this for anyone who has him and may be a little nervous about having him. I thought he was great, very creative with some shots and had a lot of fun with us.

I'm sorry for those who have had a bad experience with him but I thought he was absolutely amazing!

thank you for your imput.

It is good to hear from those that had a great experince as well as those that didnt ... and for all those brides who are worried .... the positive outcomes of having a disney photographer are outweighing those of a negative feedback at the moment so PLEASE dont worry!

Not being at all familiar with DSP and WDW policy on taking pictures in the parks, I have to ask can anyone else come in with the bride and groom during the photo shoot?

No problem!

I just thought everyone should hear about the great experience we had.

If anyone wants to see some of his work check out my pj. I have some posted there for people to see!

No - only the bride, groom and photographer are allowed in the park for the bridal portrait session. And Disney prohibits any other professional photographers from shooting in the parks.

I've read the MK Shoot was $800, however, in the Wish Book it says $1200. I hope the quality is great. Can you choose any other locations in the MK Shoot besides the castle and carousel? How long is the shoot?

Both are incorrect - the price is actually $1,000 if you select 4x6-inch prints in the folio or $1,250 if you select 8x10-inch prints in the folio. For $1,300 you can do a shoot in the Magic Kingdom and one other park (you get 4x6-inch prints in the folio).

The shoot lasts about an hour (in each park), and you can request locations other than the castle and carousel, but they can't guarantee them (for example, there may be workers in the area you want). However, they seem to grant most requests. :thumbsup2

racey- did you get any reply from your letter?

I havent sent it yet as i'm still trailing through the many pj's. Its amazing how many people do a PJ but never come back to say how their day went!!

I will do it though, i've got a spreadsheet all set up with details of everyone weddings.

As a side note, if anyone does a pj from now on, it so much easier for people to find stuff if you put date ceremony loc/recept loc/dp loc in the title, then do a brief summary of the different vendors in your very first post:rotfl:

Since this thread has bubbled up to the top again, and since I was so vocal in it about our problems....

I have posted a new thread talking about recent developments with us getting our issues with our MKPS resolved with Disney. Since I do have a thread on it, I won't put the whole thing here too. But... for anyone who hasn't seen the other thread, we did end up doing a reshoot after all, a couple of weeks ago when we went back down for our 1st anniversary.

The photographer we got was Amy. And she was incredible. The pictures aren't up on-line yet, but we did get to see them later that morning when we had a meeting with someone in the photography department. They were SOOO beautiful. They were everything I expected in a MKPS... and maybe more. There was one drawback to it being a reshoot... we weren't able to take our wedding clothes down. But the way we did it... well, I'm torn. In some ways, I miss that we don't have so many MKPS shots with my wedding dress, but in some ways, I like what we did the second time better.

But in short - Amy did an incredible job, and we had a blast doing the shoot with her.

And overall, most of the people who have put up their MKPS pictures for viewing have had wonderful pictures, IMO.

So I do think there isn't really that much to worry about doing the MKPS. I think the point here is not to worry upcoming brides nearly as much as it is to try and get the past brides who have been dissatisfied to DO something about it. It not only helps us, who shouldn't pay so much for pictures that aren't worth it, but it helps those upcoming brides. I think Disney is finally getting the idea on this, and may be trying to do something about it. At least, I hope so. That way, no future bride gets the same kind of bad experience that some of us have had.

I know we used our opportunity to explain exactly what we felt was wrong with the pictures, and why the photo shoot itself was somewhat a bad experience. It isn't that we want to get the photographer in trouble - we, in fact, said he was sick that day and felt bad for him. But we pointed out that when someone pays this much for a photo package, that can't be an excuse. You have to call in another photographer if that's the case. You have to make sure that the customer is happy with the product.

We wanted to make sure that we not only got something worth what we paid for, but that hopefully Disney will do some training and make sure no one else gets an experience like we had in this area. It was the only part of our whole wedding and honeymoon that was in any was unpleasant.

Oh, and this is for RumblyTummy -

You said in one of your earlier posts something about there not being much the photographers can do to get too creative with the castle or the carousel or whatever, that those are the creative parts of the photograph.

I disagree on that one. Why? If you look at the pics I have posted that has both our original shoot and our re-shoot combined, I think you can see a BIG difference.

The biggest problem with our original shoot (aside from basic errors like shadow on faces, bad angles, etc.) was that most of the shoot didn't even look like a Magic Kingdom shoot. It could have been taken almost anywhere. For a majority of the pictures, you would have to be an extreme Disney aficionado to know where the pictures were taken, and they didn't look "magical" at all - just like nice wedding shots. Good, but I had plenty of good shots from my regular wedding photographer. It was all about the setting and using it in a creative way.

Then look at the new shots. Every single shot is incredible IMO. They all use the whole Disney look and feel to make the pictures look like a fairy tale. To me, that's what the MKPS is about. I know people have different styles, and like different things, but I don't think anyone pays $800 (and I know it's $1000 now, if it hasn't gone up again) to have pictures any wedding photographer could take anywhere.

That's what we mean by training the Disney photographers. They should be at least somewhat consistent. They should understand what expectations are for a MKPS, and that they are not quite the same as a normal wedding shoot.

I just had my wedding a week ago! Our Photographer was Rhett Pyle and he and his wife were fabulous! They knew all the shots to take and were quick! His website is artisticphotography dot com. My Mom booked him herself - save some major money doing that and he gave us full copyrights on the pictures. They were great! Apparently he was one of the original photographers that helped design the wedding pavillion! Although, I don't know if or how many times he photographed in the countries.
