Tragic story...

Why didn't the man who was calling 911 stop the woman from driving off? And why did the MoM not notice the girl was out of her Car seat? Like helllloooo how did a 2year old unbuckle herself, since she was inside, she didn't know her son did it..

This story is sooo Sad :sad2: and makes me soooo Angry

My neice is 3, she breathes funny and I'm asking her if she is OK

We are from Calgary and this is so very tragic. More questions than answers for sure. This is what was posted by the Calgary Police Service.

CALGARY POLICE SERVICE MEDIA RELEASE

On 2007 February 20th at approximately 09:00 hours a parent
was transporting her two children, aged 6 and 2 years, in her
Chevrolet Blazer from home to the eldest child’s school and
made a stop at an office to run an errand. The vehicle had
been left with the engine running.

The eldest child had unbuckled his sibling as she was crying
in the back seat. The eldest child then fell asleep in the
front seat of the vehicle as the youngest was playing with
the power window buttons. Somehow the child was able to
activate the window and from witnesses was heard yelling for
her mother. Another witness then walked up towards the
vehicle and observed something sticking out of the window and
upon closing the distance discovered that it was the young
child.

This witness then took immediate action to release the child
from the window area and placed her on the car seat. He then
ran into the office building and requested the occupant to
call 9-1-1. The witness requested someone to check on the
child while he was on with the emergency operator.

Subsequently the parent returned to her vehicle and observed
her two children presumably asleep. She buckled the youngest
into her seat and left the area to drop off her eldest at his
school. After doing so the parent observed her youngest
child as non-responsive and contacted 9-1-1 for assistance.
At the same time a police vehicle observed the vehicle and
the occupants in distress and went to assist. First aide and
CPR was initiated and upon arrival of Calgary Fire and then
EMS advanced life-support was provided.

The child was transported to the hospital and was pronounced
dead at that time. The District #4 General Investigative
Unit was assigned to investigate this incident and upon
preliminary insight and through witness information it
appears that the child’s death was caused inadvertently in a
very sad and tragic accident.

Bizarre for sure...completely truthful...who knows?....neglectful...absolutely. This Mother should be charged.

This story sounds really fishy to me. First, the man supposedly finds the girl stuck in the window. How did he get the car door open in order to put her back in her seat? Why did he not just start yelling for help?
And IF someone had opened the car door to put the little girl back in her car seat, WHY didn't the 6 year old wake up????
THEN< the 6 year old could have said "Mommy, there was a man that put ______ back in her seat after she got stuck in the window"

And assuming the 6 year old was a heavy sleeper, wouldn't the lifesaving man have tried to wake up the sleeping 6 year old and tell him that he was going to get help?

These have GOT to be some seriously stupid cops to just go ahead and declare this an accident without a thorough investigation.

You know this is exactly what I was thinking. Somethings not right.
My first thought was perhaps the man was somehow involved in the little girls injury...But obviously the cops have discounted that. How on earth did the boy not wake up? Surely there was a lot of noise as the man tried to free the stuck girl from the window. Why didn't he shout out....I would surely be screaming for help in this situation??
Something is definitly not right.

QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: "I think this is one more thing that no one imagined could be possible, a young child dying at their own hand playing with the power window buttons," said Duty Insp. Luch Berti. "If the car doesn't have the keys in the ignition, if the car's not running, it's virtually impossible. Let's just all learn something from this."

Is this guy an idiot, too??? YES! People imagine it! Thats why you dont leave your kids in the car when you go inside! ANY NUMBER OF THINGS CAN HAPPEN!!!!!

Sounds very strange to me, too.

I can't imagine the amount of time it would have taken for the six year old to unbuckle the two year old, move to the front seat and fall back asleep.

I am speculating that the six year old had something to do with it - and is possibly lying about it himself.

And the cause of death - cardiac arrest? I would have thought it would be asphyxiation, unless the child had some pre-existing cardiac condition where the stress of being caught in the window would have caused a heart attack.

This is so sad. I would feel absolutely horrible if I was the mommy. I'm not saying that to place blame...I just can't imagine something like this happening. I would feel so responsible.

I think that blame should definitely be placed on the mother. Who would leave a six year old and a two year old alone in a car nevermind the fact that she left the engine running in a city? This mother was neglectful. I'm not sure if she should be charged or not but she certainly is to blame.

I agree the woman should have been more responsable, but in defense of leaving the car running. It's Calgary, AB, Canada. Its very cold at this time of year and it was better to keep it running than to freeze the kids. She should have just taken the kids in with her, but that was her choice.

The weather is irrelevant as the kids should not have been in the car unsupervised in the first place.

Is this not considered neglect??? She jsut left her children in a car!!!!

how sad! :sad2: The mother should be charged, however, she is going to have to live with this for the rest of her life, knowing she caused the death of her daughter, and that will be punishment enough! It's bad enough she left her kids in the car, but to leave the key in the ignition and engine running?? I am surprised the 6 year old didn't try to drive off on top of it all!

I have never left my kids in the car, except for at the gas station where I am only a few feet away from the car!

She should have just taken the kids in with her, but that was her choice.

No, it isn't a choice. You do not leave young children alone in a car while you run errands, go shopping, run in the bank, etc.

(This has nothing to do with leaving your kids in the driveway to put another child in the car, or something similar).

It is crystal clear that because of the mothers neglect this awful circumstance happened.:guilty:

This is entirely the mother's fault. They really shouldn't let stupid people breed.

That is so sad. I recently saw a program on TV about SUV power windows and how dangerous they are. They demonstrated by putting a carrot in the opening of the window and closed it. The carrot was sliced in half as if by a knife!!!!

Guess the North American car manufacturers will install the newer types like the European models. They use switches that you have to lift up and are apparently much safer because they also stop if something is blocking the opening.
