If you're driving in another state with expired registration or inspection sticker, can they get you for that? Or pull you over for it?

We were talking about that at a party today and nobody knew the answer.

If they notice it, I would say yes. I think if you are from a state that borders the state you get pulled over in, the cops would know what to look for, but if you were pretty far from home they might not know until after they pull you over and run your info. I wouldnt risk it due to the possibility of an accident and not being covered by insurance.

I think breaking laws would cross state borders?

In PA, we had an issue this past year where the inspection stickers were defective and peeled partially off the windshield. So a lot of people just hold off on getting it inspected since it's unlikely they'll get pulled over for expired expiration. With some of the clunkers you see around here, it explains why they don't want to get them inspected. Oh, and PA wanted to charge people something like $5 to replace the defective ones. Sorry, but I don't think so.

In CA, definite yes and they can tow your car. I've seen some CHP officers do that. They don't have to know different plates as they can just run them through the computer as they are driving behind you.

Expired plates, yes. We don't have inspection stickers so I doubt most police officers would even check for them if you were pulled over. Maybe close to the PA boarder.

You just answered another question we had! A few of us thought you still didn't need inspections, and others thought you did now. Have they talked about changing that? We had neighbors who use an Ohio address so they don't have to get their cars inspected. I don't get it, because they don't drive cars that wouldn't pass.

Yes and no. We don't have inspection stickers but we have to pass an e-check every so often. It used to be every other year and we had to pay for it. Then at least for a while the check was free but still every other year. I bought a new car in 2007 and so far I haven't had to have it checked once. I'm not sure if there is an exception for the first x number of years you have a car or not (for new cars only I assume). I just wait until I get my renewal in the mail and if the box for "e-check required" says no I don't bother. If it says yes this year I'll have to go get one.

With my FL tags, I had no inspection requirements and was left alone when in other states regarding that.

It would not be fair for someone just visiting or passing through to be ticketed for something that their registration does not require. That isn't to say that if you have faulty equipment--police could pull your over for that. (i.e. tail light or headlight out).

Never had an issue myself in all of my years of driving.

Now I'm in an inspection state. Woohoo.

Actually, in California, whether the out of state plates are expired isn't the primary issue. In California you have 14 days after establishing residence, or starting a job in the state to get California plates and a California driver's license. If you get caught, the penalties are obscene. We get a lot of new hires from out of state, and some of them come from states where it costs like $40 a year to register a car, and our registration fees are based on the value of the car..........my 23 year old Chevy costs $100 a year to register, my $10,000 '07 costs $200, so if you have a $20,000 Honda or Toyota you can easily be looking at a $400 a year registration fee, so folks balk at that.

They will ticket you for an expired registration. But if you are out of state (with out of state tags) then you will not get a ticket for not having a current inspection sticker from your home state.

My home address is in TX, but my DH and I have been working in PA for the last 2 years. We bought a new Tahoe in NY state and my dad went and got our tags and registration (from TX) and mailed them to us. TX has state inspections (stickers), but we will not be responsible for getting inspected until we drive into TX. But we still could get out of an inspection ticket by telling the officer that the vehicle was purchased out of state, and that this is the first time it has been to TX. As long as we got an inspection within the first week back, we should be fine.

DH and I have also worked in NM and CO for long periods of time as well and purchased vehicles in those states, and the same applies there too.

And just in case you were wondering....
When you buy a vehicle out of state, you will pay your states taxes (at your home state rates) as if you had purchased the car in your home state.

Also, we were unable to establish residency in these states because we live in corprate housing, and you need bills and a lease or morgage in your name to prove you "live" in that state.

I would think for an expired (registration) tag, yes. But not for inspection sticker because not all states have inspections.
