We will be driving home north from DLR next Monday - when we left the Monday after Thanksgiving we left around 2:30 or so and the traffic wasn't too bad.

If we wanted to stay longer, leaving at like 4 or 5... I assume going north on I-5 then would be a nightmare... Is it any better going 57 to 210 West? We came in that way once and it was a lot better... but I assume they still have rush hour. Is it horrid??

Thanks for any insight!!
Kim :)

I frequently have travels that take me north of LA. We live a mile or so from the park. Taking the 57 to the 210 is a good choice. Plus there is car pool lanes for a portion of that drive. Yes, it is a longer distance traveled but in my opinion worth it.

When we head home (same way as you) we do leave around 3-4 and yes we do hit traffic, a few times it's been bad enough the garmin rerouted us, don't ask me where tho, I can't remember. :)

Yeah, the 5 will be horrid that time of day during the week. One solution would be to stay even longer and don't leave until 7. :)

You can try the 57/210 method, tho I suspect you'll be traveling with the San Bernadino herd and 91 east overflow going up the 57. Still probably better than the 5. If you're feeling adventurous, you could go 91 west (should be the opposite of evening rush hour traffic), 710 north, 105 west, 110 north, 5 north. If the 5 is still packed at that point, you'd have the option to ditch the 5 and take the 2 up to the 210 then rejoin the 5 past San Fernando. It's actually a few miles shorter than the 57/210 method but you have to stay alert for a lot more freeway changes.

I suggest the 710/105 jog to keep the path as far as possible from both the 5 and 405, though you could take the 91 all the way to the 110.

Hmmm... interesting!! Maybe we will do a crazy freeway route all over the place!

I would love to leave at 7 - we might actually do it - but we live in SF so that puts us home at like 3am. Hmmm, now that I say it like that, I don't think we can leave at 7!

I hate to think about leaving at 2 though... :( Want to stay longer...

OK so I mapped out the 91 (that is artesia right?) to 710,105,110,5 and it only shows 10 miles longer than going straight up 5. So it might be worth it... 5 just sucks.

I wonder if we should do it - I guess we can look at our little google traffic thing before we head out and see how bad it looks in either direction. That is usually pretty reliable.

We left that late a time or two, it was a very long drive home. We tended to leave by 3, that way we did miss most of the traffic, anything between 4-6 we hit major traffic, after 6 was OK but ya, the getting home super late sucked.

I think this is the best option. If you have a smartphone, check Google maps regularly starting around 2pm. The 5 may be okay, but if you see orange and red, the 91-710-etc. may get you around most of it. My only concern is taking the 110 through downtown to get back to the 5. That's usually pretty bad during the afternoon and evenings, but it's a short enough segment that maybe it's worth it.

Thanks everyone!! Maybe we'll just be beat and be ready to leave by 2 then it will fine!

I appreciate all the help.
