The secretary where I work told me her daughter became a woman recently. I asked her if she slapped her daughter in the face. She looked at me and asked "why would I do that?" I told her that my mother did that to me at that time in my life. She said she had never heard of such a thing.

I asked a jewish coworker of mine if her mother slapped her and she said, "yes". I never realized it was a jewish tradition. The girl is supposed to be slapped in the face to restore the "color" that she would be losing!

Does anyone have traditions that are interesting/odd?

I've never heard of such a tradition. We don't have anything like that in our household when a child comes of age.

Now THAT is an interesting tradition! I don't why, but it's making me LOL. Do the girls know it's coming?

I'm trying to think of other traditions that are along the same line and didn't think I could and then I remembered one - giving kids the number of spanks on the rear for the number of years old they are on their birthday. We don't do it at home but it was always a tradition at school!

I guess that would take their mind off of any cramps they may be having...:earseek:

What an interesting tradition. All my mom did was take me out to get some stuff I would need

WOW! I've never heard of that before! Very interesting.

What a fascinating tradition!!
My friend's husband left a red rose on his daughter's pillow to celebrate the new phase of her life. I thought that was pretty cute!
As for my family's traditions, well the only one I can think of is that for Christmas Eve we always left Santa a beer. Dad always said that the "poor man has worked so hard all night, he deserves a beer!"

I'm Jewish and my mother never did that to me. I even went to an orthodox Jewish day school - for 10 years - and was raised in a Traditional synogogue and nothing like that was ever mentioned. Maybe it's a regional thing? What part of the country are you from? Or something that your ancestors brought over from the "old world"?
