I just bought a resale for AKL. I want to stay at riviera resort, but I know I cant book there. I heard of someone saying you can trade points, but I wasnt sure exactly how. Can someone explain? Thanks!

I believe that’s only possible if both people have more than 1 membership number (owning at least 2 contracts that have different use year months). Each ‘membership’ can only do 1 transfer per contract year, so one way either in or out.

Trading points? Or trading reservations? As PP mentioned, if trading points, you won't be able to do it unless you have 2 membership numbers. If trading reservations, there's a lot of variables involved: length of stay, size of room, and type of room all come into play and it will most likely be different point values... It's probably easier for you to rent out your AKV points and then rent an RIV stay.

Yep. It could be hard work finding a RIV who wants to trade, plus specifically for AKV. Your way sounds best.

As others have said you're better off renting the points for cash and then booking the stay through DVC rental store. I don't know many people who will do a 1:1 trade of AKL points for RIV. RIV points being used in the 11 month window is going to come at a premium. Maybe there's someone out there who owns RIV resale who might be willing to do it? But as a direct RIV owner, there's not really an incentive for me to trade for AKL points unless it's for concierge, value studios or a grand villa stay that I want to guarantee I get so it's kind of a specific niche.

I think MAYBE DVC resale market was making a point swap program but it's not up and running yet as far as I'm aware.

I agree with others that if you want to stay at RIV, you are going to just rent your points and use that cash to rent someone’s points that are valid at RIV.

You can always do a points transfer. You keep your AKL points, but find a Riveria owner with points to transfer to you for an agreed upon price PP. You will then be able to book your own reservations and use the points however you want (including banking if it’s before the deadline) As an owner, I prefer control over the points/reservations to change as needed as opposed to being locked in to a certain reservation when renting. And you can always rent out your AKL points to pay for the transferred points.

Just keep in mind the taxes of renting out your points. Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think you can offset the taxes w/ the transferred points like you can with MF.

That only applies to this situation though, right.?
It would definitely be cheaper for both parties if you found someone needing a similar amount of points to trade. Avoiding the middleman by just trading points seems like a great way to enjoy more variety of resorts for much cheaper than renting.

The resorts will make a difference but you are still limited to one transfer in and out per UY so finding someone who wants get points that might not be eligible for a trip until later on is what can make it tricky.

If I want to travel in my 2023 UY, I can’t get 2023 points and then transfer my 2023 points..I could only transfer my 2022 or my 2024 points..

Since transferred points retain all their own rules, the person getting the later points has to wait to use them.

How does renting work around that.?

Renting is simply booking a trip using your points on your membership so nothing changes Hands.

The reservation remains in control of her owner of the points which is not the same with a transfer, in which the points are moved from one owners membership to the next.

Wecan book as many reservations as we want as long as we have points to do so,

For example, I book a RIV trip for you in my 2023 UY and you book one for me in your 2023 UY. But, those trips stay with us which means I can cancel yours at any time and vice versa,

The risk in this is someone’s trip will be second and whomever that is has to trust that the owner won’t cancel it after they have take their own trip. That is why most don’t trade…they simply rent a reservation out, get the money, and turn around and use that to rent their own.

To be fair, all rentals have a risk that an owner could cancel it but it’s rare, especially when money is involved.

Yea, i guess I'm thinking of renting, & paying by using points someone else wants to use. Maybe not worth the hassle or the risk, but technically if you had a group of owners that all trusted each other you could basically have "11 month" points anywhere.

Yes, that could work if the owners all agreed how to determine value of the points at the different resorts.

I would consider my RIV points more valuable than my SSR points so would not do a 1:1 trade between the two.

Now, I consider my VGF points to be valued in the same area as RIV and would. But, I am sure that someone else might see it differently.

And that is why trades of this nature have never caught on.

Yeah any kind of actual trade seems much too complicated to work out in reality.
I think the only way something like that would work would be a group of friends/family that you know personally sitting down and agreeing to trades or exchanges. People you know & trust and who know & trust you.
Otherwise, as others have said, it's much much simpler to rent out your points you aren't using, take that cash and rent from someone who has the home resort you want. That's what I plan to do if I ever want to try out Riveria Resort, since as a lowly resale owner I can't stay there. LOL
