I think its actually better to get duplicates. Makes it easier to trade. We purchased about 50 on E-bay (around $2.90-$3.00 each w/ shipping). I think there are about 30 my kids want to keep.
Pin trading is actually quite fun. My DH, and I used to make a little fun of it, before we had kids the age to trade, but found it quite enjoyable once we started in. DH and I don't trade, but my oldest started trading a few years ago, and both will be trading this time. I've collected a few, and he has too.
I really wish, that I had known ahead of time, to purchase on E-bay, or somewhere else cheaper. At $6.50+++ per pin, it adds up fast.
Another place to look for cheaper pins, is the Outlets. I have seen posts from people who say that works great too.
Have fun

Ours aren't very attractive either. They are official Disny pins, but are mostly Euro Disney, and not characters my kids are apt to want. All are Mickey, but the are pewter or silver. The uglier they are, the easier they are to part with![]()
