Could you give some advice on inexpensive ways to start trading pin collecting? We'll be going on cruise 12/4/03 and we have 2 kids who'd enjoy it. I looked on ebay- pins are selling $10-20 each- what do they go for on the ship? Also-the lanyards- any economical suggestions for pins and lanyards?

The pins on the ship started at $6.50 and went up from there. I think the average price was more like $8.50. My husband bought a lanyard with a holder for his KTTW card and a metal Mikey Mouse on it for I believe $12 and started his pin collection with 4 pins that were exclusive to DCL. They also had lanyards and pins in a kit that were themed - i.e., Disney Princesses. I want to say they were about $25.

newms,
Also come check out the collectors board here on DIS.....lots of people willing to help out there:)

Aimee- what are the collector's boards? How do I access?
Thanks all, for your advice.

newms,

The collectors board is in the "just for fun" section of the disboards, if you are at the main page, go down until you see it , it is above the cruise line board. If I knew how to put a link in here I would. Its just a bunch of pin traders over there:) Actually its more than just pin trading but you would get a lot of advice over there:)

If you have a Disney store in your area, try them. We have been lucky in the past getting pins on sale.

This gave us a great start for our trip to WDW this past Feb. They had a lot of pins on sale or clearance, and several were unique to Disney Store, as opposed to one's available at park stores. We made up a starter set for our DS, and nephew and niece, at a very low cost.

Disney Stores no longer sell pins. But if you have a Disney Catalog Outlet near you they may have some.
I would try eBay again. There are many sellers that start their auctions at $2.00 or less, I was just bidding on some myself yesterday. Even if you pay $4.00-$5.00 a pin, it is still cheaper than $6.50 and up on the ship and in the parks.

The key to getting pins for $2 a piece on eBay is to look for a "lot" of pins. Many will have a set of 12 pins going for $25. Who cares what they have on them (as long as they are Disney) because you will be trading them away! I also bought our lanyards in an eBay lot.

Good luck!
My sons love this activity on the ships. They are 5 and 8. I like it too, and I'm a little older than that!

They are $25 and include a lanyard and two sets of matching pins to start with. One for keeps, one for trade.

4 pins and a lanyard- not a bad deal for $25- and the previous poster was right. They are themed with such as Mickey's Golden, Princesses, BuzzLight Year, Lilo & Stitch---just some of ones I can recall...

Have fun- we are just starting our trading ourselves. :earsgirl:

we left the wonder back in august with 2 pins and no lanyards and now have 3 lanyards and 27 pins thinks to Ebay. i have found if you look on Ebay for stuff under Disney Cruise Line you will find some neat stuff and some stuff you will laugh at. there are some really great sellers that sell pins cheap that you might want to keep and just trade. good luck trading:happy1:

is to go to online Disney store, I shop there alot. They are always having sales and I have noticed pins there also..:)
I, myself am having trouble finding a lanyard ...been looking in ebay for days now... it'll come soon! ;)
I did see the starter kits for $25.00 but would like just an extra lanyard...

:wave2:

Good luck!

If you plan to rent a car when you are in WDW, you might want to check out Belz outlet. They have a character outlet store (2 stores), sometimes they have WDW pins there a little cheaper than in the parks.

I bought 48 pins for $96.00 on E-Bay. I split the pins with my sister and we gave them to our 4 children. They had fun trading!

I hate that the Disney stores no longer sell them. Last year we picked up 25 or so pins at $1-2 each. We had duplicates of many pins, but my children didn't mind as they were able to trade the duplicates onboard.
