Hello all!

I will first apologize if this is not the right place to post this, but I didn't know where else and thought maybe someone here could help me out.

We recently aquired a timeshare from my inlaws. It's listed as a red week sleep 12 gold crown thru RCI. It's in VA though, not FL. I don't know of it's trading value yet. But my inlaws believe it to have great trading abilities. I was thinking about looking into trading it for one of the DVC resorts. I'm new to this and my inlaws don't really have much of a clue on how it works either so I was hoping maybe someone on here could help, or point me into the right direction to find help. :confused3

I think our timeshare is "weeks", not "points", does that matter? Everything I see mentions points. But my inlaws keep telling us it's not a point timeshare. Does RCI convert them into points, can we convert them or does it not work like that? Is it possible to trade into DVC thru RCI with a "weeks" timeshare?

How soon in advance do I need to look into requesting a DVC resort? Honestly I don't think we have a preference. We have never stayed at any of them before. We are not planning to go until October 2014.

Thank you for any help you all might have!

DVC offers us the opportunity to exchange into RCI on either a weekly or nightly (points) basis, so you might be able to trade into DVC on a weekly exchange.

RCI assigns TPU's (trading power units) to its member timeshares...you need a certain level of TPU's to see DVC inventory, some people pool 2 years to get enough TPU's.

It looks like most inventory pops up 10 months out:

I would start finding out how/if you can login to RCI by yourself.

Looking through the RCI directory, I see no VA resorts that are GC, 3 BR and not in the points system. It could be that it's a 4 BR, that is was GC but is no longer or that the resort is in the points system but their ownership is not. Regardless, making a few choices it looks like about the max TPU you're be able to get would be around 27 (assuming it's not VA beach) and that you deposit 271 days ahead of time. Here's the reduction schedule based on lead time. Unfortunately many people think they have good trading units that don't.

Days in Advance of Deposit Start Date Percentage Retained
< 14 days 45%
15 - 30 days 60%
31 - 90 days 80%
91 - 180 days 90%
181 - 270 days 95%
271+ days 100%
If you'll send me the resort, week number or dates and updated info on unit size, I can tell you the TPU. It's unlikely you'd be able to get a DVC 1 or 2 BR using a single deposit, you'd most likely have to combine deposits for another $109. So the cost for a DVC 2 BR is likely to be in the range of 2 years MF, $189 exchange fee, $109 fee to combine TPU and the $95 fee that DVC charges extra to exchangers.

My aunt has RCI Orange Lake Orlando. From what I read, we can't trade for any Disney property? Does anyone know if this is correct?

No Orlando resorts are allowed to trade into Disney.

When is the best time to put a request in for an April 2014 week using RCI points? We have an ongoing request in now, but I am wondering when there would be inventory available (if ever).

Has anyone had any success with an April trade-in?

DW and I (with two DDs) are hoping to go for our 25th wedding vow renewal and need to stay at a Disney Resort to do the wedding ceremony...

Fingers (and toes) crossed...

Right now Nov& Dec are showing up. Look for yourself at least twice a day as the on going search doesn't always work.

That is generally -- but not always -- correct. It depends on how your timeshare trades.

For example, Wyndham and some other systems trade on a "fixed point grid," meaning that for certain seasons we pay X# of points for a two-bedroom, regardless of resorts owned or exchanged into. In those systems, our point deposits are "generic" from the Wyndham system, not a specific resort. So owners of the five Wyndham resorts in the WDW area can, and in fact do, exchange into DVC via RCI.

I believe there are other resort systems which have the same ability.

But generally, as Dean said, you can't trade within 30 miles.

I think for the vow renewal, you also need to book room...check with Disney before you trade into for a "freè trade room".

Oh well, thank you for the info.
Not only that they'll ban you from that account using other weeks as well.

Been in April a couple of times. You should put the request in now if you haven't already.

The only exceptions I know of are mini points systems like Bluegreen and Wyndham simply because they haven't counted them as being Orlando resorts. I doubt one would be successful with an Orlando deposit for those that do specific weeks like BG, I don't think Wyndham does.

There are still lots of Wyndham specific week contracts out there, and I think you are probably right about those being subject to the 30 mile rule.

I'm pretty sure they do, my reference was related to the points system, sorry if I wasn't clear. It does bring up an interesting thought as it applies to Worldmark, Wyndham, Bluegreen, VRI and the like. If one has a membership paid for by the company AND a fixed week in it, I wonder if that disqualifies the account from trading in. I know this is a potential issue for BG where you can add other weeks but likely isn't for Wyndham because I don't think you can combine the corporate account and others. I'm not sure about any of the other systems.

I'd also like to clarify 2 issues though. One is that my understanding is that DVC intends to block weeks exchanged that are not Orlando weeks but have an Orlando registration AND points accounts that have any Orlando basis for the points. However, I believe people's actual experiences have been mixed in that some have been successful in these areas and some haven't. I do know for certain that DVC has cancelled trade after the fact including RCI points exchanges but that some have gone through as well.

Just looked at RCI and there are some weeks available for Oct / Nov.

OKW 2 Bedroom 10/27
SSR Studio 10/27, 1 BR 10/19 and 10/26

So, a strategy question. Do people trade weeks? I.e. if I book the 10/27 week now at OKW will someone trade me a 4/13 week? Is this doable (and legal?).

Thanks!

Not using RCI as it's still renting in RCI's eye's though I'm sure it's done. How I've used it is to reserve what I want then search for the same thing (or acceptable replacement) using RCI, not really any different in principle than a DVC wait list. I do this with my II account for Marriott as well. It's an effective tool to lock in your dates but still give you the chance of a better or cheaper option. Last summer I got a 2 BR at the Marriott Ko Olina for ocean side (I own and was holding a mountain view villa the same dates) so I took the exchange and deposited my villa to II to roll it forward. What I traded for Ko Olina was also a lessor resort so I both extended my deposit by a year AND upgraded it as well. The cost to do so was zero as Marriott to Marriott is now free. This past Jan I got a 2 BR in Aruba for a lessor 1 BR as well using the same principles. I've also done this with my Bluegreen account for either cash to get into a Presidential suite or to get something cheaper than using my points directly.

I am about to acquire 13 weeks at the Grand Summit at Mount Snow VT (quarter share ownership). They allow trades through RCI. They said it is a Gold resort. Can someone tell me what my chances are trading out some of these weeks for DVC? My unit is a 1 bedroom 2 bathrooms that sleeps 8.

While it may sleep 8 it only trades for 6 as a 4(6) 1 BR. The base trade power (before any downward adjustments) varies from 13-26 for all but 3 weeks of the year. Those 3 weeks are Xmas, NY and week 7. As a rule Ski time is a little higher than summer, July/August is higher than June/early July and the rest of the time is VERY low. It is gold crown but that doesn't mean a lot in this setting. I had posted the trade power adjustment schedule earlier in this thread. I don't know how that resort works, which weeks you get or how early you can deposit them. IF you can deposit them at least 271 days out, I'd do so and then start to combine weeks (additional $109 fee). Just make sure you plan when to combine, it's a little tricky. You should be able to do one combination about every 1.5 to 2 years and keep things moving forward pretty well. Good luck and enjoy your time.

To trade to DVC you'll either need to combine to get at least the mid 40's TPU or deposit one of those 3 top weeks I mentioned. Just plan ahead and put in an ongoing request for DVC, if you're realistic you have an excellent chance of success.
