Trading in games at Gamestop?

My son has a GBA and about 40 GBA games that he wants to trade in and use along with some gift cards to get a Nintendo DS....does Gamestop take these still? Or are they too obselete now?

You might want to try to sell them on ebay first. You will get a lot more money on ebay from them than going into gamestop. We just sold our old gamecube and about 20 games on ebay and made around $100. I think game stop had offered us like $40. My son was using this money to upgrade to an xbox 360.

I agree with selling them on EBay, especially if they are Nintendo published games like Pokemon or Mario games. Gamestop's trade in prices are a joke and I always sell my old games on EBay for way more than Gamestop would give me.

Search completed auctions on Ebay for each of the games you have in case you have a valuable one.

I would try to sell them on Craigslist or Ebay before trading them in to Gamestop. You will get much more money for them and then you can just use the cash to buy the games your DS wants.

Hang on!! Wait!! Does he have the Game Stop card?? He can get an extra 10 percent on trades and then they're often running promotions where he can get an extra 10, 20, 30 or more percent on top of the 10 percent of the trade in value. This can *really* add up! DH does this all the time, and ends up paying around 10 bucks for a new game. Sometimes the extra percentage is offered if you put the trade in value toward a pre-order but almost all the time he can put it toward something other than what he pre-ordered.

If he doesn't have the game stop card (it's like a rewards card) you can buy it for $15, but you get a year subscription to Game Informer magazine and it gets you coupons for things like buy 2 get 1 free, and the etra 10% on trades, etc. Not a bad deal.

OH!! I just saw this. Game Stop has an extra 50% (yes, 50%) trade in value when you put it toward used games and consoles. He might be able to get a used DSi in great condition for next to nothing.

There are also stores that specialize in just gaming equipment, dvds, etc. - they are like specialized pawn shops.

If you don't want to do ebay, those sorts of stores are usually a better option than Gamestop, as those sorts of stores usually take into consideration the rarity of a game.

For a store like gamestop, GBA games are not going to be in high demand because they're fairly outdated technology. The people who shop at the specialized stores wouldn't be closed off to out of date technology - they might even be looking for a specific game.

I don't know if we have that card, we must since he buys a lot of Wii crap from there. I saw the 50% off thing...I think I'll stop by there and see if they have any used DSi's. I didn't even think of them having used ones of those....thanks!!

I just did this and it worked out great. Sold some games and DVD's. Sent them off in one prepaid (by Amazon) package and in 4 days had a credit on Amazon. I priced out eBay but between fees and the hassle of sending out a bunch of things, if they sold at all, it was not worth it.

The 3DS isn't just a redesign of the system like previous updates. It is an entirely new system. The new 3DS plays games that only can be played on the 3DS, which means he won't be able to play a lot of new titles developed for the 3DS system and will be out in the cold purchasing many newer titles as DS games fall out of favor.

Admittedly, the popularity of the DS assures that new DS titles will continue to be produced for quite a while into the future, but new popular games like Mario Kart 3DS and Paper Mario 3DS won't be.

This. Having observed the Gameboy to Gameboy Color, Gameboy Color to Gameboy Advance, and Gameboy Advance to DS, handhelds switch over much more quickly than consoles do. PS2 was popular when PS3 came out, and it took about 2 and a half years for PS2 games to disappear from stores. I recall Gamecube games were gone within 6 months. Gameboy color games were gone within half a year. I expect maybe 8 months or so for the DS because its so popular, but Nintendo announced this system over a year ago and developers have been working on stuff or it ever sense.

I would spend my money on one system in April that you will be able to use for 6 or 7 years like the life i got out of my DS, rather than buying a DSi now, and in a year, give or take a few months when there are no games in the stores anymore, then have to buy a 3DS.

Pretty much (special needs child). He doesn't care if it's a DS, DS lite, DSI or whatever.

I'm not worried about not being able to find games in the years to come, as gamestop still sells GBA games so I'm sure we would be able to find them there.

I've never done this myself, but my friend was just telling me about this yesterday. He said he took five x-box games in to trade. They would only give him $22.00 for all five of the games.

You might be better off trying to sell them yourself.

I believe it's the DS lite we bought each of our kids a couple of years ago. They are able to use GBA games + DS games on it. We were able to buy TONS of GBA games on ebay for very little $$. If they ever complain about wanting the newest gadgets, we just remind them how blessed they are & it quiets them down pretty quickly

This. We have done this with DS games and I do it with my text books. Works great.
