Mods, please move if this is in the wrong forum.

We are new dvc members and wondering if members "trade" home resort priority in order to get the best chance at 11 months. We are just trying to plan for any scenario for our 2021 trip to wdw and want a grand villa at VGF. We know this is most likely not going to happen and planning on trying to get SSR since that seems the most likely. Our home resort is VGC and we were would be traveling thanksgiving week hence the problem of trying to get into VGF.

This seems like it would be a win win for both parties but still skeptical especially about points being equally used in value.

I won’t say that it never happens but it is rare when owners at two different resorts can agree on the value of each other’s points. And then there’s the trust factor - can you trust the owner who travels first to not cancel the later reservation?

You would have a better chance of success if you can find an owner with enough points to transfer to you. Or one that you can rent a reservation from. You could then rent out or transfer your own VGC points to cover the cost of renting the VGF GV.

Or just save points and book a two bedroom and a studio.

Or make your reservation right when you 11-month window opens...hard to believe all grand villas would go so fast (even for T-giving) that you couldn't get it right when the window opens...

It wouldn’t really work because our home is grand californian and we are looking at grand floridian for our wdw trip. So we are stuck with 7 month window for that trip.

Agree. I think we will just see what happens at the 7 month window and see what’s available. Here’s to hoping for grand floridian or animal kingdom. :)

The problem is, VGF only has 6 GVs. It is highly likely that some, if not all, of the nights during Thanksgiving week will be booked by 7 months.

Your chances of grabbing a GV are better at resorts that have a large number of them, such as SSR (36) or OKW (27). You even stand a sporting chance at AKV if you’re willing to stay in Kidani where there are 20 GVs, while Jambo’s 6 GVs will most likely be booked by 7 months.

Yep, that’s what hubby says about VGF haha but I’m hoping for a miracle. We are planning for ssr but will see what’s available.

If you really want VGF I would consider trying to rent the points and just renting our your points to cover the cost.

Realistically, we are planning for OKW or Ssr.
We would prefer VGF, animal kingdom, bwv or ccv. So we will just see what’s available for thanksgiving week at 7 months. I was hoping grand villas would be more open since it’s higher points.

I don’t want to rent out our points since it will be our first dvc trip.

You’re going to run into the same issue with CCV (only 4 GVs) and BWV (only 7 GVs). While there may be some nights available at 7 months, you’re not likely to get the entire week. Thanksgiving weekend is very popular for GVs in general in spite of the high point requirements.

You may want to take a look at this post by @drusba concerning GV availability. Thanksgiving would be considered a high demand period.

I think OKW would even be hard to get, because it is a very low point use. They are a bargain and people book them usually before 7 months. Wish you the best of luck. SSR is in the process of a refurb and the new rooms are looking very, very nice. If you can only book there, hope you get a new room. We were lucky to get a 2 bedroom at VGF at 7 months this fall. Counting the days down.

Just be sure to keep trying even if what you want isn’t there at 8 am window. Things change quickly. Just today I wanted to try to get a SV studio at VGF for my March trip. I was lucky to snag the LV. At 8, couldn’t get it but at 9 it was. While March isn’t Thanksgiving and a studio isn’t a grand villa, it does indicate that things change within those first few hours as home resort people switch! Good luck

The last time we booked a GV at BWV it was August. I was a week or ten days late in calling at the 11 month window, and had issues.

Your best option might be to rent out your VGC points and then try to acquire a transfer of VGF points. But you would have to get all the points you need in one transfer as owners are only allowed one transfer in or out per year. My guess is that it would be very unlikely to find an owner who has all the points needed for a GV to get in one transfer.

Or forget about the GV and just book a two bedroom and a studio.

Thank you!

Thank you everyone for the info! Hubby is more realistic about the availability of DVC at 7 months haha. He’s hoping for at best, animal kingdom but knows that ssr is most likely. I’m the dreamer and love VGF. We would prefer to stay in a gv since we are taking my parents and brother and wife and want to stay altogether. If we see there’s absolutely nothing then a 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom will work (I didn’t think studios would be available at 7 months thanksgiving time). Whatever happens, we are just excited to finally own DVC and taking our entire family to Wdw. We will see what happens next year! :)

Be aware that Thanksgiving week is one of the extremely high demand times for WDW DVC resorts. The issue you will face at 7 months out will not just be for GVs, for which you are likely to have issues everywhere including potentially SSR. The issue you will face is getting anything at all at 7 months out , and you may find even 2BRs and 1BRs gone everywhere for multiple days of the week, although a 1BR, possibly at SSR, AKV Kidani. Or OKW may have a chance. In any event, you should not enter that 7 month race for a room for Thanksgiving Week with high expectations of success.
