Is this possible to trade newer resale points for old DVC/direct purchase pts?
For my son's honeymoon, they want to go to Tokyo Disney Disneyland hotel or DisneySea Mira Costa then end of Sept checking out Mon. Oct 2, 2017. We have older/original OKW pts to use, but cannot use our newer resale contracts. MS says we are short about 178 pts even when borrowing next years pts. MS says we can call Toyko to pay cash for remaining 3 nights??
That made me think about this potential trade option, as we have DVC resale points available. So my question is can this type of trade happen and how could it be done?

Assuming that transferred original points can be used for trades to non-DVC resorts, you could have someone transfer original purchase points into your account. But with the one transfer restriction, you could not transfer back to them...you would need to make a reservation for them at a DVC resort using you resale points. It would be like paying for a transfer with a rental.

I assume you mean some sort of one-time trade arrangement between yourself and another owner who has direct purchase points.

In my opinion, that would be incredibly difficult to arrange. Just finding a member to do a one-on-one trade would be tough. Then you'd have to complete a transfer to get all of the other owner's points into your account. Owners are limited to one transfer per year, meaning that you could RECEIVE the transferred points but could not simultaneously SEND your points to the other individual.

If your goal is to fund the trip with your DVC points, I'd suggest renting the points for cash and using those dollars to pay for the Tokyo trip. Chances are you'll be able to fund the trip for far less than you would spend directly booking with points. The published rates for using DVC points at non-DVC destinations is not very favorable to owners.

I agree. As a minimum I'd compare the 2 options. Normally using points for DVC returns between $6.50 & $7.50 per point, normally on the lower side and by the time you add in the risk, the value is even less. Essentially one is lucky to come out with dues only. For such a trip one would be roughly 2-3 thousand dollars ahead renting and paying cash even taking into account the income taxes on the rental. But compare because there can be a rare exception.
