Does anyone know if Tracfone cell phones work outside of the U.S.? DH is going to visit his brother who is stationed in Germany and he only has a Tracfone. I have a cell plan with Cingular or A T & T. I just don't know if either would work. I am getting nervous that I won't be able to reach him on that cheap-o phone!

My husband has traveled to Europe and his tracphone does not work over there. Maybe you should call the tracphone company and ask.

Thanks for the info. I will call them and see what they say.

I'm pretty sure your DH could rent an overseas phones from one of the larger cell phone providers without having to have a contract (AT&T, Verizon, etc). I checked into it briefly some time back when I had a co-worker that needed to travel overseas on business and thought he might need a phone but I don't recall the details.

What about Skype? It's free from computer to computer (We did this option his first trip there.)...or my DH bought one of those cheap pay as you go phones last trip to Australia (purchased it in Australia) w/out long distance, then purchased skype minutes to call me in the US. The rate was a heck of a lot cheaper then any cell carriers rates we could find. Here's a list of the rates.

Actually, I think this is how he worked it.

no cell phone from a US carrier will work overseas unless you purchase an international dialing plan and have a tri band or GSM phone. You can purchase unlocked cell phones that will take European sim cards-but realistically the best thing would be to uses skype or purchase an international calling card and have him call you-or you can get one and call his brother-i have an international calling card that is quiet reasonalbe-i havent called europe in a while but do call the middle east fairly often-it runs less than 40 cents a mintue for most of the countries in that area.

We live in Illinois & my husband went to Wisconsin on a fishing trip & it didn't work. And my parents went to Canada & didn't get much reception with theirs, but were able to call when they got to land out East.

Thanks to you all. I think that the international calling card will be the best plan.
