tracfone confusion & Q?

We are considering getting 2 prepaid US phones for our use when in the USA. Our first use would be at Disney World. So we would ship to Resort & activate & set-up local Cdn phone # for people back home.

But we also travel elsewhere in the USA at times. I understand we would not be charged long-distance, but would have a special number to dial first. But if we went to say, Chicago or New York on our next trip then Tracfone would have to mail us a new SIM card? Is this how it works for other Canadians on here? Do I have my info right? Will I need to request mailing of a new SIM card everytime we travel?

Thanks for any practical advice on this.

I have a tracfone and it is my understanding it must have a US phone number. I set mine up with an Orlando number. There is no long distance anywhere in the states so a different sim card would not be necessary. I just add prepaid minutes when they almost expire.

For anyone at home to call me it would be long distance. I got it for me to save money when I have to make calls home or within the US--you dial the 1 800 number and then whatever number you are calling. The phone doesn't work at all in Canada.

Thanks tmli for your quick response. That's how I had initially understood it -- free l/d throughout USA so it wouldn't matter. I guess it would matter if I have an Orlando # and am visiting Chicago & someone from Chicago wanted to phone me. Just trying to get my head around the advantages & disadvantes with tracfone vs. virgin prepaid. The mailing of Sim cards sounded like a hassle.

I've had aTracfone since 2005. You do have to have a US number. You don't need new a SIM card when you want to use it in different places. You will use the 1-800 # to make long distance calls. If you want to have friends at home call you, you go online and set up the international #. This will give your friends a local # to call that is connected to your phone. They allow 3 per phone.
