Help! We are renting a Sienna for our trip (9 days to go :cool1:) taking 4 adults and one 5 yr old princess...I am struggling a bit with planning for luggage, never having driven one before! I went and got the measurements side to side and floor to top of seat, but dummy me forgot to check space between back of 3rd row seat and the door! Can anyone help me with this so I can plan what bags to pack and tell grandparents?

TIA!!!

Do you know if the Sienna is in the seven- or eight-passenger configuration? If the latter, which has a second row bench seat instead of two captain's chairs, you could cram three people into the second row and fold down the entire third row. This should give you plenty of luggage capacity.

If it's the seven-passenger configuration (which I believe is more likely), then you will need to use at least part of the third row for seating. It does fold down in two sections, however, so if someone can squeeze into the small part you would have about 60% of the full width in the cargo area and a smaller section behind the one seat. That should hold a lot of luggage too.

If you have to have the entire third row up or even the larger part up, things might be a little tight. You can put a fair amount of luggage in the bottom of the rear area, but you can't stack too much too high because of the slant of the rear door. Depending on the size of the suitcases and how creative you are, you might be able to get four larger suitcases and a few smaller pieces in the rear area with the entire third row in seating position. There probably would be room in the rest of the cabin for a few more bags.

Thanks!

I am pretty sure we will have one with the two captains chairs in the second row (7 passenger configuration?) but could probably get away with dropping part of the 3rd row seat. Is there a way to secure the suitcases / bags if we do this to prevent them from sliding forward into the rest of the van?

I would fold down the small part of the third row. there is a deep well that is the trunk space. you can fit a lot of things in there then have floor space next to the seat in the third row. You could always leave the third row up and just use the deep well. you would be amazed at the space behind that third row. we could fit a few large bags PLUS our very large double stroller and still have room.

I love my Sienna.

There's a difference between "old" and "new" Siennas. Some of the new sienna's give you the capability to totally fold the 3rd row seat into the floor (leaving you two rows of seating and a LOT of room for luggage. I don't know if that splits (have part of the 3rd row recessed).

On "older" Siennas, you can fold down or remove either part of the 3rd row. If you can remove part of the seat (instead of just folding it down), you'll have PLENTY of room. The 2nd row captain's chair will keep the luggage from sliding forward.

We just traded in a 2006 and it had the split seats that fold down into the floor. I can't imagine that any rental car company (OK, any mainstream rental car company) is going to have even something as old as a 2006 on the lot.

You may have to play with it a bit and see what works. Worst case is that one of the adults will have to cram into the small part of the rear seat for less than an hour; which should be doable for all but the largest or mobility-impared individuals.

There is a total of 39.1 cubic feet of storage behind the back seat. Using some general guesses, I would say roughly 2.5' D X 4.75' W(based on overall width of vehicle) X 3.25' H (this is a rough number based on headroom), now obvously you won't go to the ceiling (that would be bad), so say safely 2.5' X 4.75' X 2.5' of space.
