Toyota dealership won't budge on price...say they can sell vehicle anyway!

three weeks ago with the cash for clunkers still hot and heavy.......we went to a ford dealer to purchase a cash transaction for a car........no cfor clunkers just a buy......well the salesperson said ......we all made our quota and then some.....and it was the first of august.....so basically he said he didnt need our business........he called back every day until I passed the phone to my husband and said you deal with him.
We will wait until the cash for clunkers is finished and then buy another car...we are keeping our truck so there was no trade ins either.....
He did go to the price we wanted to spend but heck we told him we are going to a different dealership and different type of car.......
Wait and hold on until this program is done......they will be begging for your business soon enough

We dealed with our Toyota truck.

Try waiting until the end of the month-this month and Sept they need to get rid of last year's models-we go to 3 local dealers-no one has a monopoly.

Honda gave us a great deal on an all-new CR-V in Sept 2007. They also dealed on an Accord & Civic with us in the past. I'd at least try another Toyota dealership. Oh and Toyota told us that once too. I got a Nissan instead that time, lol. Maybe they could sell it at sticker, but they couldn't sell it to us.

Nothing kills a car dealer or salesman worse than walking away for a week---especaially toward the end of the week...

We walked away when we bought my wife's 4 Runner--they called us back, we went in...walked away again....ended up getting what we wanted, but it was a process...but it's been a good car, so we've been happy...

No such issues with my F150...told them what I wanted, got it immediately (paid cash)....

I dont' even want to go there with my hot rod Mustang--my wife loves to hate that car (but I rescued her with it once--long story--so she really loves it)....

If you are able to wait a month or two I would suggest that. As someone else mentioned with the cash for clunkers going on most dealers have met their quota and exceeded it and aren't in any rush to deal with you.

Once this program is done, they will be hungry for sales once again.

Where are you getting your facts about the Prius?
From that bogus Hummer vs. Prius report that has been debunked a zillion times?

I;ve never heard of such a report. It makes no sense to compare the two since they're not even close in size or type :confused3

I am not trying to talk anyone out of a Prius - would consider one for myself
I have however read an article that said that the batteries were not "green"

I have a Subaru now which supposedly recycles almost everything in their factories

I bought a Highlander and a Prius last year, and I was able to negotiate the price for both. Do your homework, find out how much the dealer cost is for the car, and know that you can go even lower than that if you are patient. Make sure they are aware that you are planning to visit other dealerships and don't be afraid to walk away if they aren't willing to work with you. Buy toward the end of the quarter if you can wait that long and you're likely to get a better deal.

:thumbsup2

We did this in the spring when we bought DH's Highlander. I didn't like the price they put in front us and walked out. They called 3 days later with a lower offer. Then 2 days later even lower. It wasn't a tremendous amount but it was worth a couple thousand.

We did finance the vehicle and checked with our Credit Union before going. The dealership's bank BofA said they would meet the CU rate. I told them they needed to BEAT the rate or it wouldn't be worth it to me-- they did. I told them they needed to include GAP since the CU included that too. They lowered it again.

When we bought my Solara Convertible there was absolutely no negotiation at all. They KNEW they could sell that car in a heart beat. We even drove 4 hours to get the one I wanted. I was OK with that. I love the car.

Toyota receycles the Prius batteries as well. There are so many Prius battery myths out there.

Then what are your concerns about the Prius?

I work at a Honda dealership and I must say this is mostly the case. Honda never offers rebates, yet people keep buying them over comparable vehicles that come with rebates. We don't advertise the cash for clunkers program ...we don't need to. Our dealership is on what is called the Auto Mile and it is nothing but dealerships on both sides of the road everything from used car lots to porsche and audi. There are cash for clunker signs all over these other dealers we have not even one, yet our lot is full of clunkers waiting to be towed away. Long gone are the days when you could really haggle the price of a car, you can thank Saturn for their no haggle price tags for that. Yes, we slowed down somewhat because of the economy, but their is always a steady flow of customers.

Anyone who has bought a Honda or Toyota in the past 20 years will know what the salesman said is true. They are better made cars period. There is a reason US made cars are down the tubes. :sad2:

While the economy may be bad, people want real quality, dependability and longevity for what they are buying.

I'll have to disagree. BIL has had nothing but Toyota for the past 15 years and has never, ever paid the sticker price.

While it may have been true 20, even 5 years ago that Hondas and Toyotas were better made cars than the American brands, that has changed and more recent comparisons rankseveral American cars better than their Honda/Toyota counterparts.

Everyone keeps saying about this quota......I work at a dealership and yes, each sales person has a quota, but working around salesmen I can tell you that they want each and every sale. Every sale over the quota is more money in their pocket, so I think the whole " I've met my quota I don't care " is bogus!

They have nothing to do with HUMVEES you brought that up youself, straight out of left field :confused3

You said:

" I'm a bit of an environmentalist as well and have some major concerns with how Toyota represents their Prius"

First I asked why. Then I asked if it had to do with a bogus report by CNW that has been around saying that the Hummer is more environmentally friendly than a Prius. Anyone who I have heard say that the Prius is not good for the environment has gotten their "facts" from that article either directly or from someone else who used it as a source.

You still haven't answered my question about what your concerns are with the Prius. I have been researching this car intensely for almost two months and am well aware of all the facts and myths of this car. Maybe I could help you with your concerns. That's all.

The saleman that dealt with us told us that they ALL had met their quota and then some because of the cash for clunker program.....they would rather sell the vehicles with this program and not have to bicker about prices because these people are getting the amount on the sticker.....period....we will wait for the dealerships to come back on earth and then buy a car.........we will keep our chevy truck for winter travel and hunting......but want a car for around town travel and longer trips

The same thing happened to us when we bought our Highlander in 2001. We told the salesman our price, he made this big show of going in the back to talk to Oz . . ooops I mean the sales manager . . .who came out and laughed at DH and said if he waited half an hour, he could sell the car for HIS price without one word of haggling.

We walked out, drive to a dealership 15 miles away, named our price again, and bought the exact same Highlander for cash:thumbsup2

To this day, when we drive by the first dealership, DH always says "remember that jerk who blew us off on the easiest cash sale of his life?"

I would never buy a Toyota again - they are alright, but not that impressive, and the dealerships definitely have an attitude.

Toyota does negotiate on some of its vehicles but the Prius has always been MSRP and they have only had rebates on them for the expiring model year. I owned a 2006 Prius and just traded it for a 2010. The car is fantastic and it is the ONLY hybrid that can run on electric only.

Just to give you another piece of information the price you see on the invoice, you know the one they say is what they buy it for...isn't really the dealers purchase price. It's on there but its kind of concealed, because they don't really want you to know what they payed for it. Its all a big game, you just have to know how to play it.

I have been talking with this salesperson for weeks and she has quite the attitude. I would love to speak with someone else, but not sure how to go about it. It's not that she has done anything wrong, just a snippy "whatever" attitude. If I show up on the lot, she will come to me as soon as I pull up. Anyway, how much below the invoice (not MSRP) do you suspect they actually pay for the vehicle?
