Toy Train Sets

My DS recieved his start up set for Christmas last year. We loves to load the train cars, use the tow trucks that are on road not tracks. For the price I highly recommend it to anyone.

We also did THe Day out with Thomas. My kids loved it. We will be going back next year.

If you just need a small table check out this one at KBtoys.com it is on sale for $54.99 http://www.kbtoys.com/genProduct.html/PID/1051009/ctid/17/INstock/Y/D/

Thanks! They had a similar one at Target too, for about the same price. I am still deciding if I want that one or the larger, rectangular one. Space-wise I really should go with the smaller, but if I get him something he can add on to, I figure the larger one is more practical. Who really needs to have furniture to sit on anyway?

I was at KMart last night and they had a wooden train/track starter set clearanced for around $25 or so. They still had plenty of them left...I think they even might have been Brio, but I can't remember. I know it was a good brand, b/c I remember thinking "wow, I didn't realize KMart carried this brand". Pretty sure it was Brio though. Orig price on the set was $50. HTH.

My son has the Target train table and set you talked about. I did pay about $80 for the table but I got the set for about $20 on sale last year before Christmas. They are both very nice quality. Veronica

My son has the Geotrax set. He loves it! His DSis6 "helps" him put it together and they each have a train and controller. He can be very rough, taking the pieces apart and playing, but he has not been able to break it yet. I even bought 2 track layout kits on EBay for about 5.00 a piece. These are great because I can follow a plan, know which sets to use and can build the best train layouts ever!! The whole family plays, it's great!!

The only problem is that I have trouble finding the elevation track sets. Some layouts I have go up 3 levels and I need some sets that I just can't find.

Other than that it is one of our families favorite toys.

Geotrax stay together very well (unlike the wooden tracks) and because they are so large, they work great on the floor.

We store ours in an old chest of drawers and use them on the carpet. If I had to get a storage thing for them I'd buy one of those clear plastic drawer units. Not beautiful, but the kids like being able to see what's in the drawers.

I really don't think the small train table will work with the geotrax. We have a full sized table and still choose to use the floor. Sometimes DS & DH make a layout that goes all the way across the room!

I got my son his train table when he was 2 for christmas. He just turned 6 in Aug and still plays with it everyday. We have the wooden tracks (some Thomas and some generic ones from wal-mart and toys r us). They all work together and the trains are very sturdy. I have gotten alot of the Thomas trains from Wal-Mart attached to videos. You get both the video and a train for around $10, so that's like 2 gifts in one. He also has some of the metal Thomas, but doesn't play with these nearly as much as the wooden ones.

We were at Aldi tonight and on our way out I noticed the "next weeks specials" poster and it looks like they are going to have a train table WITH a 120 peice starter set for, I want to say $84. I didn't have a chance to look but it looked like a train table w/ trundle drawer. My sons are BIG train fanatics and we have a gazillion and one trains here so train stuff always catches my eye. ;)

Am I understanding correctly that the set that's $229 online is $139 in the store?

Can anyone confirm this, please? :confused3

DS4 and DS2 have both Geotrax and Thomas wooden train sets. They do love the Geotrax but it takes up a lot of room and kind of a pain to set up and put away all the time. Our Thomas wooden set has been out and never put away. We do have a train table so it can all get put away quickly. DS2 absolutely loves Thomas and even sleeps with him. Thomas was actually a gift for DS4 who never really got into it.

For all of you who have train lovers, I just discovered the I Love Toy Trains videos and my DS2 loves them. He wants to watch it all the time.

ditto Sylvia on the Geotracks and Thomas. Our Geotracks gets pulled out occasionally but it takes a while to set up and they need more help setting that one up and making it "work" into a loop. The Thomas/Brio/other assorted wooden stuff has been out since the day we got it and is played with daily. They can make their own "train circle" with that. The train table isn't played with much at all anymore. They prefer to make big setups on the floor. ;) Of course our train table has the layout glued/screwed in to the top so you can't change that one. I got it when the RightStart stores were closing here. It was their floor model I asked about buying it and was told if I could "make it disappear" by the end of the day I could have the whole thing (Brio table w/ trundle, Brio mountain layout and drawer full of Brio and Thomas trains and accessories) for $70. I was on the phone to my husband faster than you can imagine saying "how fast can you get here with the truck????" :rotfl: In the trundle drawer was at least 20 Thomas trains, Cranky, Thomas train wash station, water tower and probably 20 or 30 pieces of track. :goodvibes As we were leaving a lady in the store asked if she could buy it from me and said "I figured it is going on ebay anyway, right?" I guess she didn't see my almost 4 year old and 2 year old literally vibrating with excitement behind me. :teeth:

Yes, A friend of mine has this and DS liked it, but he seemed bored with it just watching the train go around. He kept wanting to take them off and move them himself and I'd hate to get something like that and have him break it. I did think it was more expensive than that, though, so perhaps I'll look into it. Thanks! :)

My son who just turned 4 LOVES Geo Trax! And he doesn't even use the remotes most of the time. He moves them along the track himself. He, too, got bored just watching the train go around and around. He makes his own set and uses his imagination...it's a great set! And the add ons are great! I don't know if he will ever outgrow it. He has been using it since he was 2!

It is a train table that comes with a 100 piece deluxe train set for $129!!!

From what I've read, it's has nothing but good reviews, so I am on my way to get it from TRU!

Hope this helps!

Thanks! I think I Actually just saw this in the TRU flyer over the weekend. I just haven't made it there to check it out yet!

Hope you don't mind, but have been reading your posts.

If your son likes trains, when you and I finish our treatments, I would like you to come to our home. My husband has a WONDERFUL model rr set up in our garage. Kids just love it. Ask my grandkids!!!!!!!!!!!! It is huge, and took him about 1 1/2 yrs. to complet it. Also has a larger one that goes around the ceiling.

Tried to get him to add a Disney train to it, such as the one they have at DownTown Disney, but he won't. He does not like Mickey. How have I stayed with him for 36 yrs?

Donna

I saw an offbrand at Walmart for less that $20.00. Also, try searching on ebay and limit it to items located in your area. If you find something send the seller an email asking if you can pick the item up. Shipping can be very high on train pieces so that will save you some $$. Also, have you checked craigs list? I've seen train stuff on there before. You have to check it daily and usually need to inquire asap if it's a good price.

If you can't swing a table right now they sell playmats that you can play with your trains on. They even have one that makes sounds. HTH.

I have the Walmart brand train tracks and they break really easily. Make sure whichever brand you buy is made like the Thomas ones, where each track piece is one piece of wood. Mine from Walmart has little knobs glued onto the end and they break off CONSTANTLY. The trains are fine, and haven't broken yet at all, but the track pieces are just awful. I'm just waiting for them all to break so I can buy a new set. (plus it's hard because when the little knob breaks off it's a choking hazard for my little ones.)
