I need any and all tips!!! Not a big surprise becuase I had ankle surgery this past March...but now I have a painful achilles problem in the same foot. I'm going to need my big black bulky boot. :earseek: Has anyone every toured the parks in one of those and how did you do? Of course I can walk...it's just better with the boot on due to swelling. This new "flare up" started brewing on Sat and just seems to want to get worse on a daily basis. I just know someone is going to give me some great advice....I'm trying to stay positive.
We leave on Saturday (10-15).

Maybe it has something to do with Okla!! :rotfl: We're form Tulsa!!!i had the same achilles thing 2 weeks ago when we went. My Dr. gave me a RX for a steroid pack. I was nervous about taking it, but was SOOOO glad I did. I didn't think it was doing any good until I got off-schedule one day and it was killing me!! :earseek: It was the greatest thing I did. I babied it a little, bought insoles, and iced it everynight, but was glad I had the steroid pack--can't remember the name, :confused3 would know it if I heard it. Look into it. :wizard:

If it's still bothering you, there are plenty of places to sit down, and you can always rent a wheelchair. If you really needed it, you should check into renting an electric wheelchair because I have read here the ones you push are heavy.

Try posting on the disAbilities Board here at the DIS. It's down the list further.

Hey...I'm just up north in Owasso. Great tip...I will check with my doctor. I think a few days of steroids would be ok. We keep some liquid on hand for the kids allergies/ asthma...maybe I'll raid their supply ( :rotfl: only joking). How did you hurt your achilles and where all did the pain radiate too? Glad you are feeling better...are you heading to WDW for fall break?

If you can afford it, an ECV would be the way to go. Walking around WDW is much more strenuous than walking done at home. Why aggravate your condition and potentially detract from your enjoyment? Bring along a plastic bag in case you need to ask for ice to ice it down a bit. There is a lot of walking between the bus stop and the park entrance, so you may want to consider that when deciding to rent in park or off-property. The advantage to renting from off-property is that you have the ECV both in and out of the park.

Have a great vacatioin!

Thank you for the good advice...I will check out the boards. I really hope I can do this without the wheelchair but I will be prepared for the reality part.

We just returned and my DD (28) had just had her cast removed from her broken ankle before we left. She had done a trip in a wheel chair when in high school and was determined not to use one this trip (she's just not comfortable in a wheel chair in the heat and crowds). I rented a chair from Care Medical because I was sure she would (should!) use it - but she did fine without it. We all learned to walk a little slower and enjoy the view - she took a few extra breaks to sit and rest - we either started our day late or went back to the room/pool for break time if we started early and she kept her foot up whenever we were taking a break. I felt better knowing that the wheelchair was always right in the room if she needed it - it would have also been easy to pick one up at the front of a park for the day. The pace was a bit slower than normal for us, but we still had a FABULOUS trip! Just wanted to let you know how much we all (even DD!) enjoyed our trip despite the ankle pain ! :smooth:

Thanks everyone. I will take it slow....which is good becuase Grandma will need some breaks too. This will make waiting for fireworks and parades as added time to rest the foot. I just thought I should bring some plactic bags to keep my boot dry on rides. At this point I'm glad that I'm weight bearing! This morning I really could not walk without the boot...too much pain. I also have some pain medicine to take the edge off.

I don't know how I hurt it really, but the pain was from the arch to the mid-calf. And usually, only if I was on it for awhile. (not good for Disney) We went last month, but would love to be going back---have fun. Let us know if you get steroids of something. Good luck.
