We are traveling to WDW in Feb with my almost 3 year old son, wife and mother in law.

How does fast pass + work with attractions my son can experience, as we can't make fastpass + selections for him (since he's not 3 yet).

IE we want to go visit with Mickey. Do my wife and I make fastpass + selections for that and just bring him through the fastpass line with us? How does it work?

I prefer to see characters via character meals such as Crystal Palace, Chef Mickey's or Ohana and save FP+ for harder to get rides with or without the little one. Child Swap is your friend for those you can't take the little guy on but there are some good rides he can too.

He doesn't need a FP - he just accompanies you on any ride where there isn't a height restriction.

Kids under 3 don't need fastpasses -- can't have them because they don't need tickets. But the rest of your party does. So if you want to see Mickey, you and your wife need a FP.

For any attraction with FP+ that you want to take your son on (assuming there is no height requirement, or he is tall enough) all the people riding that have park tickets will need a FP+. Since he doesn't have a park ticket, he doesn't need a FP. For the attractions where he is too short - get a FP+ for one adult, bring the kid to the queue, show the Cm the short kid, ask for rider swap. The rider swap pass will allow up to 3 people to use the FP+ queue after the first group or person goes on the attraction. So mom can ride while dad watches kid, then dad can use the Fp+ queue without a Fp+ to ride while mom watches.

My son was 2.5 on our last trip. Everyone is absolutely correct - your son doesn't need a FP so no more comments are needed from that perspective, but I did want to share that my son really wanted to be like his big sister and scan his magic band at the Mickey reader anyway, so he wore his like everyone else even though we could have left it in the room. The reader will light up blue instead of green, but the CM will just reset the reader and let him through. The same thing will happen entering the park if he tries to scan his band. The only thing his band will do is open the door to your room if you're staying on site. The CMs were very nice in letting him pretend to be a 'big boy' and scan his band. He loved watching it turn blue :)
