Touring Plans Data Scientists featured in Popular Science Article

I knew I liked Len for a reason...I'm not a statistician, but am a true data geek. I've had very good results with his tool and it's really interesting to read what truly goes into it! Thanks Len!

Really great article. Love the explanation for the app not being visually appealing. Makes perfect sense. I've been using Touring Plans since 2010.

Been using Touring Plans since our first visit in 2010, and wouldn't go without it. I love the real data behind it.

One of the nice things about the inputs provided by subscribers on lines is that they post the "posted' wait time and many will then post the actual wait they experienced.

I haven't used the app (yet, plan to) but I agree that from all accounts, the wait times are much more accurate than the posted ones. It gives you a much better feel for the crowd level in a park. There have been days recently, especially in HS, that were supposed to be low crowd days, but due to issues with rides, wait times were much higher than expected (and higher than posted). Also, if you are using their touring plans, you can adjust your plan on the fly in the park.

Nice article. I've always been a little irritated by folks who dismiss the TP crowd calendars and wait time predictions as nothing better than educated guesses, when it's a whole lot more than that and is based on a lot of science and math. Of course they're not perfect and can't predict events like weather or ride breakdowns that may affect wait times. But in general they're very accurate, and they rate their performance every day and put it up for all to see. Not many others do that

Great article! I've been a subscriber since 2005. Part of the ritual of planning a trip is buying the latest Unofficial Guide and creating personalized touring plans. I also love being able to time and submit my wait times via the Lines app. I've had the pleasure of meeting Len a couple of times over the years and he's really a great guy. Makes it an easy decision to support the app, even when I don't have a trip in the works.

Thanks very much. You're all very kind, and we appreciate the support.

We've always tried to do two things with the calendar: make it objective, and be transparent.

By "objective" we mean that our predictions are things that all of us can agree either happened or didn't happen.

For example, we say things like "the average posted wait time at Space Mountain will be 64 to 80 minutes between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m." That's pretty easy to check either through MDE or with code.

We don't use words like "busy crowds" because those don't mean anything. My grandmother, with the patience of a saint, would wait two hours for Small World. My daughter complains if any line is over 10 minutes. They have two very different definitions of "busy." That's why numbers are important - we can all talk about the parks using the same language to understand what happened. (I feel like I should have quoted Spaceship Earth just now.)

By "transparent" we mean that we show the actual crowd levels that happened, along with what we predicted, every day, for everyone to see. It hurts to be wrong, of course, but transparency motivates everyone to get better.

Of course they're not perfect and can't predict events like weather or ride breakdowns that may affect wait times.

We're looking to add short-term weather predictions to the crowd calendar in 2018. We think we know enough about how rain affects crowds from one day to the next.

Ride breakdowns are an interesting topic. We're adding to the daily crowd report a metric that shows how much of each park's capacity was lost to refurbishments and unscheduled downtime. For parks like DHS and AK, with relatively few ride-based attractions, one or two unscheduled outages can really increase wait times across the park.

Thanks again for the support.

As an avid touring plans user, I prefer Lines app's "ugliness" over too much fluff, anyway. Just get me the data and the times!

If you're interested in hearing Len talk about all this data and where the idea came from he talked about it at length on an episode of a podcast called The Season Pass episode #91. It's a truly amazing geeky discussion of the numbers and the science behind the plans and even how @lentesta came up with the idea. I've listened several times and enjoy it each time.
