We're going in July, and we know it's going to be super busy. We were going to stay at Royal Pacific to get express but since we have our wedding in the same year, staying at RPR isn't in the cards for our family vacation. We're going to stay at CBBR which is DD12's favorite place, but i'm not sure how to plan our days. I think we're going to get the 2 park 5 day park to park tickets from UT, that helps with keeping costs down, but also only gives us 5 park days.

For those that have gone during super busy times, what has worked best for you? There's 3 of us and we've been before, our last trip was in late August 2017.

Have you priced out annual passes? You’re getting to the number of days where passes vs tickets aren’t that different AND you could possibly get a hotel discount too.

Yes, I'm actually going to upgrade one of our passes to a preferred pass when we get there :) If I did my math correctly, and they still let people upgrade at gate price it should only be $25 more. The UT price is $320, online is $335, and the Preferred AP online is $360. The family suite through UT is $227 a night, if we can get it cheaper that would be awesome! I would only upgrade to get discounts in the parks and maybe on the room...DD12 is good with the 5 days because it gives her plenty of pool time

Cool. :)

For 5 days, no Express Pass is no big deal. I'd take advantage of early entry. When crowds get annoying, maybe have some pool time then go back to the parks around 4 when crowds tend to die back down. But, I'd hop on one of the rides before leaving, get soaked then leave. :)

We've been during the summer months before with no Express Pass and were just fine without it. Our strategy was to be at the gates about half an hour before park opening and do our "must do" rides first. We also took full advantage of the single rider lines. Minions is one ride that gets really long lines so that's one to do right at park opening if you want to get it in. With 5 days you shouldn't have any issues.
