Hi, I am new to the DIS and pin trading. We are going in 24 days and I want to know if you could give me some good tips as to how to get started?

Also, I am in a motorized wheelchair, are there any specialty pins with wheelchairs? Probably not but I just wondered. Are there any Star Wars pins?

Any help would be appreciated.

I didn't see any pins with wheelchairs, but if there are any, the Pin store in Downtown Disney would have it. That place is great!
There are Star Wars pins in the store just outside of the Star Tours ride at MGM. My daughter picked up a cute Minnie-as-Leia pin there.

Oh! And start out by buying a starter kit which gives you doubles so you can keep two pins and trade two pins. Some come with lanyards. We also picked up carrying cases at the Downtown Disney pin store. My daughter knew about them from a friend and we searched high and low until we found them. They're great b/c if you invest in some of the heavier pins, you can put them in the case to avoid losing them. And finally, buy some extra pin backs, (about $5) and some of the locking pin backs of you get heavier pins to avoid them falling off your lanyard if you choose to wear them.
Have a great time!!

Probably your best source to find out what pins are out there is pinpics.com. It's a database the collectors have been putting together for about 7-8 years now. Go to search and type in what you want to collect (Star Wars, wheelchair, etc.) and you will see all the pins that fit your description. Tons of Star Wars pins especially during Star Wars Weekends in May each year. As for wheelchair the only ones I can think of are Dr. Finklestein from Nightmare Before Christmas.

I searched Pinpics for "wheelchair" and came up with seven pins -- all Dr. Finkelstein. I also noted that none of those pins were sold at WDW. Some were DLR, some from Disneyshopping.com, and some from Japan.

You might have a chance of finding one of these from the traders who set up around Pin Traders in DTD.

Two of the seven had very low edition sizes (50 and 100), so even if you see these, you might not have any luck trading for them. But the other five were mostly open edition and did not appear to be very hard (based on the numbers of people trading and wanting), so you should be able to trade for one of those if you see it.

If you don't happen to find any of these in DTD, and you come home with some trade pins (as opposed to keepers), you can register on Pinpics and try to find an online trade.

Good luck!

PinPics is a very good site for listing your wants and haves. You can look at see if other people have pins you want and then see if you have pins they want. Have fun and don't hesitate to post questions. Penny

Welcome to pin trading!:)

The bset way to get started is to buy a lanyard and some pins, then approach any cast member wearing a lanyard and ask to see their pins. If you haven't already, take a look at www.odpt.com for the "rules" of pin trading. That is the official Disney pin site. It will show you what pins are coming out over the next month or so as well as the newest releases in the parks. You can also look at the pins that only cast members have (Hidden Mickey pins), which you can trade for.

It is a LOT of fun! Enjoy your trip!

Welcome to Pin Trading. Be forewarned! It is HIGHLY addictive. I've only been at it since 2004-5 and I already have well upwards of 170 pins. Check out my profile, minicoopercraig, at pinpics.com. I would go with the previous recommendations and start with a starter lanyard. But also, look for the character that interests you most, for me that was Stitch, and I went from there, into getting at least 20 Mickey pins, 5 Jock pins (because I have a Scotty dog of my own), and I just keep going. I limit myself now to pins of rides that I've been on, and a few each time of pins that just catch my eyes. A word to the wise though, check out the official pin trading page and see which cast members can only trade with children under the age of 12, I was mad when I first started because there was a CM in EPCOT's Italy Pavillion who wouldn't give me a Russian Teddy Bear pin and almost ruined it for me, except there was another CM in England that walked around the whole Pavilion with me pointing things out and even traded 2 pins with me.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I got such good info, it will really help me when we are there in November.

A wonderful woman called apirateslife4evr read on my DGF's pre trip report that we were thinking about starting pin trading. She messaged us and well this is what happened...

A Huge Thanks to apirateslife4evr!!!

The post is by my girlfriend and that is me in the pictures. We were so shocked, happy, and blessed by her kindness.

We can't wait to start trading!!!
