I just booked my family's first ever cruise! I am so lost now though. We want to do the FE but I can't find a group. I have 131 days but I'm already freaking out that something will go wrong. Any tips? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

3 night Bahamas cruise 11/20/15

If you're starting from absolute zero, I recommend a book. Both Passporter and Unofficial Guide have 2015 editions. The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line also has a kindle edition, and I prefer it. (I own both.) Some will argue that the info can be outdated (true, things are always changing on all cruise lines), or that you can find everything you need online, but if you're feeling overwhelmed, it's nice to have a book with facts, figures, lists and deck maps in hand (or on your tablet). I was just going through my kindle version of the UO DCL guide last night and finding things I highlighted months ago and forgot about.

Hi Navywife! Welcome to the Disboards! Here is a link to your cruise if you're on the Dream (which I assume since you're on a 3 nt Bahamas):

http://www.disboards.com/threads/nov-20th-23rd-dream-cruise.3379062/

Check through the thread and see if anyone is organizing an FE group. If you see nothing posted, you can always ask on that thread. You can also check on another social media site (you know, the one that everyone tends to check multiple times per day? LOL). Have fun!!!

I've never done FE but have seen posts where those who have suggest to first-time cruisers to consider skipping the FE - especially on a short cruise. You will have great time on a 3-night cruise but will find there is not time to everything you may want to. So pick the top things you want to do and then leave the rest for a later cruise. For me, the FE would be a burden - but others obviously love it!

I personally wouldn't buy any books as they are at least 25% out of date when they are published things change so fast on DCL.

Read Navigstors for your cruise, read up to date trip reports, Google questions.

Ok,
Basic rules:

1. Pay your cruise fare before PIF-date (this date is in your confirmation e-mail)
2. Bring valid id's: for your cruise Birth certificate + photo ID is the minimum, passports are recommended. Don't forget them, you will not sail without proper id! All other forms can be reprinted and signed at check in, but you must bring your id.
3. Be in Port Canaveral long before the Ship leaves. If you fly: fly in the night before. It will reduce the stress. Consider some nights in WDW before the cruise.
4. Board the ship and be surprised how beautiful she looks for real!
5. Attend the muster drill (it's the only mandatory thing on the cruise)

Now the most important thing on ANY cruise:
6. RELAX! You're on a cruise, so no need for stress, noppes, nada!

Accept that a 3n cruise will give you half a day boarding, a day at Nassau and a day at Castaway Cay. On the 4th day you must be off the Ship by 9.30am. It's not enough time to do 1/4 of all ship's activiteit, so don't plan on doing all: you set up huge stress and disappointment. Don't over-research your cruise: you will book a next cruise.
So prepare to put down a deposit for an OBB (On Board Booking) for your next cruise. If you don't know your next cruise, buy an OBB-placeholder for $200. If you don't use it within 24 months it's cancelled and fully refunded, so there's nothing to loose.

Read past navigators: http://disneycruiselineblog.com/personal-navigators/ click on "Dream" and find your itinerary. Now things change from cruise to cruise, so always study the navigators you receive on your cruise.

I wouldn't bother with Palo or Remy, just have the 3 nights in the 3 Main Dining Rooms (MDR) and you will have a blast.
Read the boards and ask specific questions about the topics you want to know more about. The Trip Report board is full of real life experiences.

Enjoy your cruise!

3 night Bahamas cruise 11/20/15

Once you get to Port Canaveral and on board the ship, there is no real way to do it wrong.

Pack early. Check, double check, and triple check that you have your passports with you (or Birth Certs & ID) before you leave the house. Do not cut anything close when planning to get to the ship. Get to the airport early. Plan to be in central Florida no later than the night before. Keep the agenda on the morning of the cruise light, and if give yourself plenty of time to get to the port (we normally try to arrive no later than 1pm).

Once you're on the ship, there's not much more to do. Just realize that there is far more stuff available than anyone could possibly do in one vacation. Do what you want to do and remember that you're there to relax and have fun... not to stress about what you should be doing. It's perfectly OK to spend the first evening just exploring the ship. Dinner, the Walt Disney Theatre show, and the sail away party are the main attractions... but nothing is mandatory (except the muster drill, which is pretty darn hard to miss - since everything else on the ship is closed and there are lots of announcements).

Wash your hands often so that you stay healthy. If anyone is prone to seasickness, consider taking some medication while your body adjusts. Make sure that in port you leave plenty of time to get back to the ship (we try to be on board at least an hour before "all aboard").

And, by far, the best way to not stress about "doing everything" on your first cruise... is to book a second cruise while on board. Remember that the deposit is normally refundable up until PIF date (except concierge). Future cruise desk is on Deck 4, midship.

Above all else, have a great time!!

Thank you so much for all the wonderful advice. I have already been looking to book our next cruise! I'm so excited. This is a first on so many levels.

Thank you so much! This info is very helpful. I think I will put down an OBB-placeholder. Glad you mentioned that since I had no clue I could do that!

Can someone explain OBB & placeholder. I was so busy on my cruise, I didn't stop by & book my next cruise. I'm sure I'll want to take advantage of this next time.

Basically you book your next cruise at a discount while still on your cruise. Think of it like the WDW bounceback offers.

The term "placeholder" means that you dont have a set future cruise date in mind.

So, lets say a few months after the cruise, you decide on your future cruise dates. You contact DCL and they'll move your "placeholder" to those dates and "lock in" your actual cruise.

The advantage is you get to keep the discount without having to make the tough "when am I going again" decision while on board.

Here's a short list (falls in line with what others have said)

1) Do NOT fly in the day of. Fly in no later than the night before, even if you just end up crashing at a local hotel near the airport. You do not need the stress of a last minute flight delay or some other situation the morning you are trying to get to Port Canaveral. That said, I think the best way to do it is to plan a short WDW stay, even if only for a day or two, before your cruise. WDW will take you from the airport to your resort for free if you book it as a Magic Your Way package. DCL (for a reasonable fee) will then transport you straight from your hotel to the ship, and then back to MCO (or back to WDW for another stay) after your cruise.

2) Don't do FE groups or really overthink it. For the first cruise you'll have enough trouble finding your way around the ship. You don't need the added distractions.

3) DO look into the onboard activities, but if you want to do them (say the golf simulator) book them early. Also, note, for any missed activities / excursions that you reserve, if you miss them, you will be charged for them upon check-out, so...don't overbook.

4) For a first Bahama's cruise, and a short one at that, I'd say skip Remy and Palo (as someone else mentioned). With kids, I'd suggest the Atlantis Aquaventure for your day there. I wouldn't book any excursion for Castaway, rather I'd use that time to hit the beach for a bit, and then spend some time exploring the ship (you'll have it largely to yourself...no lines for the Aqua Duck!)

5) This is a personal preference, but I'd shell out for a veranda room, and I'd look for something midship.

6) When you first get going, remember, DECK 4 and Deck 11 are your FRIENDS! Those are the easiest ways (without getting lost) to get from the front of the ship to the back, and vice versa!

7) Never forget that Room Service is free! (aside from a few items like canned sodas)

8) Bring a mug for the free sodas on Deck 11. You can buy one on the cruise, or if you stay at WDW first and get a resort mug there, you can bring it along. It's fantastic.

9) Unlike other cruise lines, Disney allows you to bring booze on board. There are some limitations to that. You can only carry it on (not in your checked luggage) and I'm fairly certain it must be sealed (so, no night cap the night before at the hotel!).

https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/...aring-for-your-cruise/alcohol-onboard-policy/

10) Do your documents early, put them in one place, and do NOT forget them (especially your identification docs)

11) Buy the trip insurance. It not only covers your cruise in case of a cancellation or other issue, but it also has riders for medical services and medical transport. Forbid something happens while at Sea, a medivac can cost upwards of 6 figures. You don't want that. So, shell out the hundred or so bucks and set that concern aside.

12) Book a placeholder while on board. You'll want to do another cruise, probably a longer one...I promise!

13) Dress up for Pirate Night!0

14) Budget for the fact that on your last day you will be presented with a packet to clear out your on board charges. Now, things you charged yourself you'll be aware of, however, you will also be asked to pay a tip for your room steward (Mousekeeper) and restaurant staff. There will be 4 of them listed (Steward, Head Waiter, 2 Assistant Waiters), and there will be a recommended tip amount. If you tip above that, you can do so on the form, however it's probably better to bring along some cash and give it to the people directly (I won't get into why).

15) When you pack your carryon, be sure it has things you think you may want within the first few hours of the cruise. Swimsuits, suntan lotion, sunglasses, maybe even some basic toiletries (toothbrush?). The reason is due to the fact that your checked luggage may not arrive at your stateroom until a few hours after the cruise departs.

16) Familiarize yourself with the list of banned items, and don't bring them with you (or be prepared to surrender them at the port...they'll hold onto them until your cruise returns for you). That list may be found here:

https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/...plans/faqs/prohibited-items/prohibited-items/

17) Download the Disney Navigator App

https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/planning-center/my-cruise-plans/faqs/disney-cruise-navigator-app/

18) Bring some cash for shopping at the ports. Not all of the vendors will accept credit cards.

Have fun!

Great post Englanddg. The only thing I will add it to get as early PAT as you can. We just took a 3 night, and you will want that full half day to explore and get to know the ship.

Welcome!
I'm a retired AF wife... our first DCL cruise was due to a BIG military discount in 2003. Too funny about the PP's saying don't worry about doing everything because you'll book another cruise while on this one... yes, indeed, I think I ALWAYS had a cruise booked during the time from 2003/2013. Now do more short notice, about once every year or so. Looking at the Sept Repo or Iceland cruise for 2016 right now.
Don't worry about getting a specific category... they're all beautiful, as long as you get 10 and above for split bath, and depending on your circumstances that may not even be an issue. Inside cabin or verandah cabin... it is a different cruise, both good but in different ways. When we have the inside I feel cozier, and I spend more time on the decks talking to people. With the verandah I spend a lot of time sitting and staring at the water mindlessly. I like verandah for longer cruises, just for the extra "me" space, but have done inside for 10 day Med and it was great.
Have fun, if I were you I wouldn't worry about doing any excursions given your cruise is Nassau and Castaway Cay... you can walk off the ship at both and have a wonderful time.
We have never done FE, and on the first EB Panama Cruise there was a HUGE group on this board that I actively participated in. So you're good.

Navywife51904, I was you just a few weeks ago - so many concerns and things to keep straight and "what ifs". I practically lived on this discussion board, trying to soak up all the knowledge offered by all the veteran cruisers here. Then we went on the cruise on June 20th, and it was AMAZING! Everything was just the way it should have been, or even so much better than I ever could have imagined. You will stress and worry over your first cruise. And you will get to the day you board the ship. The minute you walk across the gangplank leave all your worries behind you, because you will have the most wonderful time of your life. I can't wait for our next sail!

Hello, I would like more information on how the OBB-placeholder works? Do I have to choose the date of my next cruise on that moment?
