Tornadoes

This is kind of freaking me out. I've always had a pretty healthy fear of tornadoes (one of dad's degrees is meteorology), but I was literally just discussing storms expected this weekend and worries about the potential for tornadic activity (heading to Dallas area). It all came from a discussion about colleges for our older one and looking into certain schools' tornado shelter resources. As for me, I've seen one small tornado (pic below - NWS confirmed) and several waterspouts, although I was a very young child living in the Cincinnati area during the April 1974 super outbreak (same outbreak associated with the Xenia tornado) and wasn't far from the Sayler Park F5. Before things got really bad and we went to our basement for shelter, my mom went outside with a big pot on her head to collect hail samples (near grapefruit sized). My parents still have that dented pot and some pictures of the hail that went straight into the freezer. I know...not the brightest thing, but thankfully it all worked out ok.

We're forecast for more bad weather this afternoon and evening here in the mid-south (AR/TN/MS). Our scout camping trip that was to begin this evening has been pushed back to tomorrow morning. While getting ready for work a few of the surrounding counties were announcing early school dismissals to avoid the storms.

It seems like it's happening so often! It's starting to look ugly out there - stay safe!

The high risk area designated today by the NWS is the largest ever.

Already terrible damage in several places.

I’ve seen several funnel clouds…first one as a small child. The eerie calm before it hits is creepy. We had one pop over our home…touch down a block over and destroy a church. Another hit my in-laws house. Thankfully no one was at home.

Middle TN here. Born in SoCal. Been jolted out of bed by a few earthquakes. Lost a few things off my walls. But I will
never get used to tornadoes.

1998, in the hospital recovering from the birth of our son. High floor. Watched the sky turn black outside my window. Everyone taken to the hallway at the last minute. My hospital window, the thick double paned one with the blinds between the glass, broken.

2006, husband and I were out shopping during an active warning and watched huge American flags at a car dealership change direction before our eyes. Straight as a board. Then saw the cloud pass…flags followed it.
You sound a bit like a former postmaster we had here. She was retiring and headed back to California. She dropped by the window I was working one day and I asked her if she wasn't afraid of moving back to the earthquakes. Her answer was pretty much, are you kidding? I am way more afraid of your tornadoes here. lol
