Tornado!

I just found out there were four tornadoes in the town where I attend university. I just got off the phone with my apartment manager and thankfully it sounds like our complex was spared even though we were between the two systems. I was a bit worried because I am on the top (second) floor.

I'm very glad that I wasn't "home" as there is pretty much nowhere for me to go during a tornado, not to mention the siren closest to me was disabled because it was malfunctioning and had been going off for no apparent reason (they never did figure out what was causing it). It sounds like there was some pretty signifcant damage to the town where I did my student teaching and the northern part of the town I was living. Although our local news is not reporting any deaths, apparently the Weather Channel is reporting one death. Please keep everybody in that area in your prayers.

Novinger is where I did my student teaching and Kirksville is where my apartment is. I know it sounds selfish, but I am very thankful that my apartment wasn't damaged/destroyed as I am in the middle of packing everything up to move and that would have been an enormous headache.

NOt selfish at all. I remember being a student and not having much. I would have been devastated to lose the little bit I had.

Here in Georgia we experience a pretty active tornado season in spring and again in the fall. We have a basement with an enclosed safe room. We have at times spread out a sleeping bag and let the kids just sleep down there.

I never get used to severe weather. Scary.

Time for tornado season again! Our basement is in better shape this year! However, if you are stuck and can't get to shelter below ground...you can always go into a bathroom or closet (something without windows) and/or stand under a door frame (less likely to be crushed if something falls on your roof).
