I need ideas for doing a baked potato bar for DD's graduation party. What toppings would you like, or do you have any unique ideas? TIA

Bacon, chili, nacho cheese, shredded cheeses, sour cream, chives, onions

I'd do:

Sour cream
Bacon pieces
Chives
Salsa
Melted cheese and shredded cheddar (I love shredded, but hate melted)
Salted butter
Maybe cottage cheese - I like it on my baked potatoes, but I wouldn't think it's that common of a combo.

I became addicted to baked potatoes with cheese and baked beans while I was living in the north of England. I doubt anyone here would want it, but I love it. (And it's way better than the tuna and sweetcorn baked potato, another British fave.)

I will say that a curry goes great on a potato, if that's something you're interested in. It's a lot like a chili potato, just with slightly different flavoring.

I like a bit of beef "stroganoff" over the baked potato. You can use ground chuck or ground round, a jar of beef gravy, some sliced mushrooms and a dash of yellow mustard. Simmer for sbou
20 min and serve over jot potato

My daughter's summer swim team has a "potato party" every year and it's a blast! The kids decorate potatoes and there is a winner for each gender/age group. My DD and her friend made the band One Direction from potatoes last year and had a little MP3 player play their songs on a loop. Of course, they won their age group!

Baked potatoes are served and the toppings are brought "pot luck" by the swim families.

(off the top of my head)

  • taco meat
  • chili (vegetarian & meat)
  • nacho cheese
  • broccoli in cheese sauce
  • shredded cheese
  • sour cream
  • butter
  • onions
  • bacon bits
  • salsa
  • black olives
  • shredded lettuce
  • Fritos corn chips

However much bacon you think you'll need . . . make twice that much. No such thing as too much bacon.

I lived in England for two years and used to go to a baked potatoe bar type restaurant. We now eat them for dinner at least once a week. We are Dairy free in our house, so a lot of the fav toppings are out. We always have corn, olives, a meat of some sort (ground sausage, beef, or Mexican style chicken are fav's around my house) salsa, hot peppers, cooked onions, cooked mushrooms, cooked peppers, I LOVE tuna on mine but that is a English thing and my family would not touch it LOL. Such a fun dinner!

Glad to see I'm not the only one!

I'm a southerner &, while I would love to travel overseas, unfortunately I haven't yet had the opportunity to visit England.

However, there's a local BBQ restaurant where we used to eat frequently. I would a order stuffed baked potato (came w/ the BBQ'd pork topping) & then also order a side of baked beans to add to my potato as well.

(I also like to add baked beans on my hamburgers. And, at Easter, my mom bakes these wonderful little yeast rolls, & I'll cut the roll in half, add a small piece of ham, & then spread some baked beans on the ham - my own little yummy ham & baked bean slider! I only do this when I'm around my immediate family. LOL!)

I eat my baked potatoes simple. Light sour cream, chives, and salt.

That being said, if was not watching sat fat, I would add butter, shredded cheddar, & bacon. Yum.

Did anyone say gravy?
I'd offer both shredded cheddar and a cheese sauce.
I don't think anyone said sauted mushrooms.

Instead of baked potatoes, you might consider a mashed potato bar. They're quite the rage for wedding receptions, etc. I think the two options would be equally cheap and easy. I've personally done a mashed potato bar, and I've kept the potatoes warm in a big crock pot -- just stir well every 30 minutes. I've seen these served in martini glasses at weddings, but I wouldn't do that for teens. I'd consider either short, fat clear glasses . . . or those short, fat snack cups that Target's been selling with holiday paper tableware lately. You could probably get those in a graduation-theme.

I love this idea! And I have seen plastic clear martini glasses at the party store - you just have to snap the base and top together yourself beforehand.

Grilled Chicken
Grilled steak cubes
Steamed zucchini & yellow squash

My DH loves to dump pot pie filling onto the top of a baked potato

One of the girls I work with eats them this way. Loads the backed beans on first, tops it with a bunch of cheese, then pops it into the microwave for 30 seconds to get the cheese melting.

The last one I was at had both pulled pork and pulled chicken. She then had two different styles of bbq sauce to put on it if you wanted. Her son, was going outside of the options she had out and was putting his stash of wing sauce on his chicken topped potato. It looked really good too.

The lady metioned above, did not only sauted mushrooms, but sauted onions and peppers instead of raw options. She had the cheese sauce and cheddar shredded cheese, but she also had Colby/Jack shredded and a PepperJack shredded options.

The last wedding we went to had the mashed bar and OMG was it heavenly. They had both russet mashed and red skin on mashed potatoes to choose from. White gravy, chicken gravy, and a beef gravy. I could have gone thru that line a couple of times.

Oh my gosh, I've never heard of this, but I would love that! Mashed potatoes are such a treat. I love mine with sauerkraut mixed in.

This thread is making me hungry! One of the very few foods that my wife genuinely dislikes is baked potatoes, so I rarely eat them, but I do love them!

I also second the mashed potato bar concept. I've been to a few events with the concept and they have been wildly popular (and a lot less messy to eat in a social setting than a full baked potato).

I agree with everybody who is saying to go heavy on the bacon, regardless of what you choose! I also love pulled pork on a baked potato.
