I've been running down our fridge and pantry because we are headed to WDW for 10 days!! :cool1:

Today, however, I'm snowed in. I have what I need for mac-n-cheese but no fresh bread for a topping. So should I crush up cheerios? saltines? My half loaf of Pugliese? I have butter, so that part isn't a problem. ;)

I take 1 cup of panko bread crumbs (or regular seasoned bread crumbs) and combine with 3 tbsp of melted butter. Sprinkle on top and bake!

Do you have any chex mix or crispix? That is good crumbled on top.

Of the items you list, I would use the saltines. I would then also cut out any salt you may add to the recipe.

Those both sound like great suggestions but I don't have either. :)

I realize I don't need a topping, but I just love that little crunch on top.

I've got ritz, whole wheat hot dog buns, Cheerios (unsweetened), Frosted mini wheats (blech!).

Hmmm....I also have this:

Now,maybe this could work if I pulse it in the blender and toss with melted butter.

we do ritz cracker crumbs with butter and some garlic

We don't like anything on top, but from your list, I would use the crackers.

Just about any kind of cracker will do in a pinch. Ideally, I prefer Panko with a bit of melted butter for most casserole toppings (unless French's onions are called for, naturally!).

You can just use regular bread crumbs. But my favorite topping on macaroni and cheese is simply...more cheese. During the last little while of baking the mac and cheese, just put more shredded cheese on top, turn the broiler on and let it sit under the broiler until the cheese melts and starts to brown. I f you want crispy, let it go a little longer until the cheese starts to get a bit crunchy.

I take a few slices of bread, butter them good and cut into cubes and place all over the top of the mac n cheese.

Oooohhh baby they crisp up so good with a buttery taste :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 two thumbs up!!

I also use Ritz crackers mixed with some butter and shredded cheese. Now I'm craving mac and cheese!

None of the above, just use cheese.:cloud9:

Your half loaf of Pugliese in a food processor with melted butter some oregano and a bit of garlic would make a wonderful topping.
