Top Secret Pixie Dust! A Surprise 13th Birthday PTR! NEW! TRIP REPORT LINK PAGE 220!

oh no bummer Jackie! I have some teacher friends, and it seems every county is different with their furlough days etc.. Cobb has some this year, but didn't last..

I vote for the renting of the points so you can stay somewhere deluxe still if it isn't too much $$$ .. and like the idea of you and Chelsea doing something special at GF...

Hope you figure it out :)

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that the GF won't work out this time...
But, like some others have mentioned I think the GF would be a wonderful place for a sweet sixteen. :lovestruc Wherever you choose to stay, you and your family will have a blast, I'm sure. :goodvibes

Jackie, I'm so sorry that you're faced with a tough decision like this; however, if you stay at Pop at least you will still be on property. I honestly think Chelsey will thank you and appreciate this trip whether you are staying at Pop or CBR. Renting DVC points is always an option. We are planning on doing that for our next trip. I've heard nothing but great things from one of my friends and she's a disser. ;)

Sorry to hear the bummer news about the GF, but we help you get excited for whatever resort you decide on. They all have their perks...and besides, it's still Disney! :wizard:

I can empathize with you about the furlough days. My DH and I are both teachers and we are in the same boat in our state. :sad2:

So sorry Jackie! I'd highly recommend CBR. We stayed there and loved it! The theming is wonderful! I loved the hammocks that are hidden in quiet places. You can't beat the atmosphere and the kids will love it!

At least you still have a job. Be thankful! I was laid off in November and have only had one interview. Bad times right now. I'm so thankful my husband has a great job and has recently gotten a promotion.

Sunday I did our taxes and was completely shocked and disappointed when I discovered we would be getting approximately $1000 less than previous years. This has sent the trip plans into complete disarray.

So, what does this mean for our Disney trip?

Grand Floridian is out. There is just no way for me to make that one work. I am glad that Chelsea didn't know about it because it would be even harder for me to deal with her disappointment. At least I have just had my disappointment to grapple with over the last few days.

We do have some options for our trip.

When I mentioned this option, Charles said we would make a Disney trip work no matter what. He said we could even stay at Pop if we needed to do so. In a classic Charles comment he said to me, "What's a hotel room really?" I couldn't help but quip, "For you, it's where you spend the majority of your vacation. :rotfl:"

Houston we have a problem...

or more w/ the Spy theme...

Holy Smokes Batman....

Ok that wasn't very Spyish either...but you get the point...

So sorry to hear this...DH and I were feeling a bit overwhelmed by our trips costs just recently when a portion of the money we were counting on (taxes too) is just going to have to go elsewhere...I flet like we'd have to scrap it too...

I am glad you still are going and no matter where you STAY...the reason you are going has not changed! :goodvibes

That's what I keep telling myself. It's hard since I had a vision in my head of what this trip would be like.

I understand that!

Oh, it makes me almost cry to think of not going this year. I will make my family eat pinto beans and cornbread from now until July rather than give that trip up completely.

Ok this isn't funny...but it is....

we scrape each month for many of the little things that are needed so we can have this time away from the normal drud...Disney is our release and frankly one of the few things I look forward to...I would be Eeyore w/ out my planning and going...

Keep your chin up!

I'm sorry to hear GF is out!
I think renting points is an excellent idea. You could stay at BLT and still be on the monorail.
Also you could probably get a good deal on AKL or WL.
I'm sure you'll love where ever you decide to stay.
Besides, Charles is the only one who spends his trip in the room.:lmao:

Doesn't doing the budget just STINK?! I'm sorry you have to have a change of plans, but I'll echo what others have said in that I'm certain her birthday can be equally as magical! And perhaps you can do the Grand for her 16th!!

I love that Charles said you'll get there no matter what. :thumbsup2 Good man!

Hey sweetie!!! Now that I have my computer back, I have spent a very leisurely morning getting all caught up over here!!!!

1. Thanks so much for sharing the Diana Exhibit with us.....I too woke up extra early to watch her wedding with my mom, and it is a memory I will never forget!!! I wish I could have been there with you admiring that gown....I know it would have brought tears to my eyes because of its' indescribable beauty!!!!

2. I am glad you got a little snow---so sad to hear you were confined inside by the ice though!!! We are just now starting to melt from all the copious amounts of snow we have gotten lately---I am VERY over the white stuff, and am SO longing for the welcome warmth of spring!!!! We shall see!!!!

3. You and I have often mused about our similarities, but I almost had to pick myself off the floor when you descibed your love for the Main Street Electrical Parade----------that was literally one of my FAVORITE parts about WDW when I was a child. I too had the record with the music, and would play it constantly at our home. My mother lovingly took care of that record, and recently passed it on to me.....and yes, I still play it quite often here at our home. Tom even burned it to a CD so that we can play it from our iPod too!!!!! I am so excited that you get to see it this summer at the happiest place on Earth....I am looking forward to introducing it to Megan and Tom when we are out at DL too!!!! Happy moment for sure!!!!

4. I want to cry with you about the disappointing cuts in your salary and tax return. So sad that GF is going to have to be cancelled, but I think you still have some GREAT options. My vote is for renting from DVC...you know we have done that SEVERAL times, and it has saved us SO much money but provided us with some very luxurious vacations. BWV is a great choice---similar in formality like GF---and is one of the more affordable choices on DVC. Tom and I still rank it as one of our absolutely favorite places to stay. Transportation is good, pool is fun, location is prime.....really a great choice!!! I hope it all works out for you dear!!!!! Don't give up hope yet! Hugs!!!!

So I jumped over to your PTR when you wrapped up your last TR, but promptly forgot to subscribe. :rotfl: So now I'm back...and subscribed!

I'm sorry your plans for GF aren't going to work out, but I think whatever you choose will be incredibly special for Chelsea. Just knowing her parents planned a special, surprise birthday trip for her, will mean so much and be so cool. :thumbsup2

Perhaps you can arrange a special outing with just Charles and Chelsea. She may not get to stay at the GF, but she'll have this wonderful birthday trip with special time alone with each parent.

Can't wait to hear more! :goodvibes

Oh nooo I'm so sorry Jackie :sad2: This economy is the worst and working at a bank I see just how much it's affecting EVERYONE. Our esteemed govenor is contemplating holding back our state tax refunds for a few more months in order to make interest on the money to close our state's budget deficit. Crazy!

Anyway, it's definitely good that Chelsea didnt know about the potential GF stay. If I had to chose one of the options you chose I'd 110% say to rent DVC points. Chris and I did that in December and it's amazing. I wish we could do it again this time but renting point in December is a lot cheaper than in July and for us, Pop was cheaper in July than the points. Anyway, there's a lot of really great point renters out there. I'd highly, highly, highly recommend that. The next option I'd go for is to stay at Pop...because that's where Chris and I will be :lmao: Good luck in whatever decision you chose!

Wow! I can't believe the New York governor is thinking about doing that! I guess it is crazy all over!

I still haven't decided what we are doing -- I change my mind daily it seems! LOL!

I am here for you...not that it is any consolation but literally 5 minutes ago DH asked what the date is to change our hotel if needed. He is trying to justify the cost of AKL. He sugested downgrading to POP as well :sad2: but I just ignored him. The sad thing is that AKL is absolutely where DS wants to stay and I made the mistake of telling him we were.

On a funny note, you made me :lmao: with the Charles/ Hotel room comment....CLASSIC!!!!!

Whichever way it goes, I am sure you will make the best of it and Chelsea will have the best 13th birthday ever!

Nope, don't change from AKL -- your DH will love it there once you arrive!

I'm so sorry you can't swing the GF! Good for you, though, still finding a way to get there. Charles has mentioned going other places on vacation, and in Orlando, and I have to try to hide my horror whenever he mentions that. :rotfl: I hope it all works out for you!

Isn't it funny how other places in Orlando just can't hold a candle to Disney? ;)

For me it's a PBJ or leftovers every school day. Cheap eating is about the only thing I can skimp on. We're already frugal with heat, lights, water, etc., and I don't drink or smoke or hit the vending machines or stop at Starbucks or buy clothes or jewelry. Disney is pretty much my only downfall as far as spending my money. Just the thought that you'll at least be able to make a trip, even if you have to downgrade seriously, should keep your spirits up somewhat. Maybe you can have a meal at the Grand? Maybe you can stay there for Chelsea's 16th birthday instead. CBR sounds good to her, so that's a plus. Truthfully, some of us (me) have no business going and even staying value, but I'm willing to make sacrifices and am grateful to even be able to do that.

I may have missed it, but are your dates staying the same?

Disney is my downfall, too! :goodvibes So far I am keeping our tea reservation and the 1900 Park Fare breakfast -- I figure we can enjoy wandering around and pretending for an afternoon or morning.

So sorry Jackie!

I still think a surprise trip will be magical no matter where you stay! If you avoid Fri/Sat nights, renting DVC points is a really reasonable way to go and still get deluxe accomodations! Maybe you could do Beach Club and have SAB nearby and still have the beachy CBR feel (plus Anita and Christine's private entrance)

Save lots of $$ on the resort and spend a little extra for something special like a girls day at GF

Thanks, Katie! I'll figure out something eventually!

It sucks to be a responsible adult sometimes, doesn't it???

I loved your comment to Charles about the hotel too! :rotfl2:

I agree with a PP about eating at GF - still go and do the tea with Chelsea - that will be special!

CBR is so great - my kids are younger, but they loved it! They have the deal with 30% off still? or you can get the gift card, that might help. I assume you want the DDP but if not, they have good teacher rates at Swan and Dolphin and the rooms are huge!!! Plus it's close to BW and Epcot/MGM.
I'd look seriously at renting DVC points. You can get some great rates and stay somewhere wonderful! Good luck!
I hope things work out for you and I know you will have a great trip no matter what!!! And now we get to hear more planning (which is always fun!)

Thanks, Sheree! It does stink being the responsible adult. I think Peter Pan may have had the right idea. LOL! I haven't decided anything for sure yet, but I know we will have a great time wherever we stay.

Oh I am so so sorry the GF is officially out but you do have a lot of lovely options.

CBR sounds perfect or even POP with maybe one night at the GF if you wanted to do that? You have your lovely tea booked and that will be incredibly special no matter where you stay. I remember 2 years ago, we were booked at BWV for a Thanksgiving trip, which was a dream of ours at the time. Then I got laid off after 13 years. Moving to the FW cabins and pushing it out to mid winter break was a hard pill to swallow BUT we were still able to go thanks to making that change and the buy 4 get 3 deal at the time. I'd make that change again in a heartbeat to still go.

I would hold on DVC given the uncertainties, we are holding for the same reason.

I don't think on-site or nothing is a spoiled attitude at all. It's funny because in some ways you can get SO much more room wise off-site but you just can't compare the on-site benefits, they are worth every penny. I feel exactly the same way about staying on-site. Non-negotiable!

Jennifer has had such luck with the renting points I would definitely those compare costs to CBR with your PIN.

Breathe. It WILL work out and her birthday will be magical. They think you are going this summer right but don't know where? Or do they not know anything? I can't remember.

Thanks, Cynthia! I know we will be happy wherever we end up, and I keep reminding myself that we are lucky that we can go at all.

I was shocked that Ares and Dionysus were left out as well. The Oracle, "calling" back to camp....many many things.

I guess I expected the kinds of changes and missing elements so it did meet my expectations in many ways, not necessarily in a good way but I wasn't exactly disappointed, more annoyed than anything. It is a huge cast when you think about it, perhaps if they do continue making it they will rectify some of the key missing characters. Evan just want Tyson. Persephone was a riot.

I forgot about the tidy whities....book one was a long time ago for us!

I guess I missed the quirkiness of the books the most. Some of the changes they made seemed so arbitrary.

Say Jackie, I thought about what she said, and I agree with MeMom about Pop! Renovated rooms, the resort looks too CUTE regardless, her photos made me excited to try there! But renting points might get you at an Epcot resort, which would be great fun, too! :thumbsup2 Keeping the same dates for the trip since you have ADRs makes sense, but I was able to get pretty good choices even in the summer last year when I had to make my changes, so if your dates do need to move a little I am sure it will be fine!

Thanks, Happydog! I know that wherever we decide to stay, we will have a great time. We will be at Disney after all! :goodvibes

I'm sorry to hear about GF. :sad1: Sounds like you've got lots of great options though. It's defninitely a good thing Chelsea didn't know beforehand.

Charles is right about the "hotel room" and I cracked up over your response. So true!

I did a search on the Yellow Box flip flops and I, too, liked the giraffe print! :goodvibes They would look Ab Fab with my giraffe print Bagallini!

Thanks, Jilly! I think you NEED those giraffe flip flops to match your Bagallini. ;)

I've not idea what furlough days are but they don't sound good. Even the word furlough sounds yucky!

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dream of staying at the GF. I think you're right it's a good thing Chelsea didn't know. She wouldn't want you to feel bad about not having the $ to justify it either though.

I think after you've had a few days to grieve over GF you'll decide on your next plan. I think all the choices you mentioned (except the non-disney one) sound good. I have faith you'll still make Chelsea's birthday trip special no matter what you do.

But don't forget since you have two children that whatever you do for Chelsea you have to match or even increase for Connor so maybe it's better that the GF is out.

We are contracted to work 190 days, but with furlough days, we don't get paid for some of them. We don't work them either, but I would rather get paid than have another day off.

Thank you, Diamond! You are right about having to do the same for Connor -- poor kid has a September birthday though which always makes it harder to plan big things.

Hi!

I'm so sorry that you had to make a change in your plans! We rent DVC points every year and it has always made our trips very affordable and it is an extremely easy process. If you need any help or suggestions with this feel free to send me a PM. I'd be happy to help.

Thank you, Pinkpixie! I like the idea of renting points to try out DVC!

Oh Jackie! My heart sank when I read that! I know in the grand scheme of life, this is no big deal, but I really can feel for you. Money is tight for us as well and has been for the last 6 years while I have been a SAHM, so I know exactly what kind of decisions you are trying to make. My DH always says that our money is so tight that we have to squeeze a nickel so hard that it makes the buffalo *%#@. You'll have to infer the last part! :lmao: He's never been known for having couth.

:rotfl: Too funny about your DH's comment! We are in the same boat right now.

I'd say if Chelsea likes CBR, then go for that if you can. But you know Pop really isn't that bad. I know there are no bells and whistles, but if you spend most of your time in the parks, then it doesn't matter too much. Your children will have a blast no matter where you stay. I have found that if I take the time to make all the little things very special, then my DD walks away with fantastic memories just as if I had spent a million dollars. And I know you know how to make ordinary things special, like your Christmas elves for example. So my advice would be to turn your lemons into lemonade. You are so creative and I am certain there are tons of good ideas floating around in that brilliant mind of yours! I am very confident that you will come up with something fabulous and you guys will have a vacation that is just as magical and all the others have been. :wizard:

Thank you, Rinky! Your words made me smile! I just need to make a decision and get back on the planning bandwagon.

Sorry to hear about the change in plans. You still have the tea to look forward to, and have you thought about just spending an afternoon at the GF shopping, listening to the music and people watching. The last time we ate at the GF Cafe there was a bridal party taking pictures, that was magical just to watch.

I love Pop Century it is not the GF but it is a fun place to just hang out. They have fun pools, great food court, and I believe the best gift shop outside of the parks.

Have you checked Bay lake with your pin the price will be quiet a bit cheaper than GF or even check garden view at the Contemporary.

If Chelsea has mentioned CBR she might be hinting that it is want she wants. Then in three years the GF would be a great way to celebrate her 16th birthday.

Thank you! I have actually priced just about every configuration of room and resort! Yet, somehow, still can't make a decision!

Oh, Jackie, I'm so sorry that it's not going to work out to be at the GF this year. The good thing is that Chelsea didn't know about it to be disappointed. Like so many others have mentioned, your kids, just like my kids, will just be happy to be at Disney---that's what's important! You can still have a magical birthday surprise trip! :wizard:

The way Disney has come out with discounts non-stop, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of discount comes out for your trip dates---maybe a resort room offer, and you can grab something that appeals to you! :thumbsup2

They have lots of room discounts right now -- it's just a matter of deciding which one we want to go with -- right now CBR has the edge because I know Chelsea and Connor would really like it there.

Oh, gosh, hon. I'm so sorry. You know, Disney will always be there, but it doesn't soften the blow of not having the magical trip you were hoping for. More importantly, I can understand your angst over your job, and it is a scary world for everyone right now, teachers included. It seems like no sector is really safe, and I'm hoping that you will not have anything to worry about!!!

In the mean time, I know you'll make the right choice for your family. I happen to love CBR, and I know your kids would love it to. I think it's a great resort to stay at with older kiddos, and that could be a wonderful trip for you. Keep us posted.

Thanks, TK! Charles and I loved our stay at CBR -- we know we love the pool and pool bar set up, and I liked how the rooms were a bit bigger than the other moderates.

I would really love to be present when you and Charles talk Disney. I bet it's really funny to hear the back and forth. :rotfl2:

I'm sorry about no Grand Floridian but it will always be there at a better financial time!

Sometimes it is quite a riot when Charles and I discuss Disney. :rotfl:

So sorry about not getting to stay at the Grand, but at least you can still go. We will still dress Bo up for Chelsea's big day!

Thank you, Jill! I was thinking, Bo could still get dressed up and hold a Happy Birthday sign of some sort! Chelsea would think that was really funny when she saw it!

Oh, what a bummer! I totally understand... this has been a pretty rough year for us, too. I work per diem so whenever the doctor goes on a vacation, I get a vacation from a paycheck. Things don't seem too bad for him, though. He took a trip in December, another in January, another in February.... Ah well, the rich get richer and the rest of us....

Anyway, I think the CBR sounds like a fabulous and more economical choice. The theme pool looks fantastic and CBR is so centrally-located that bus travel time is not so bad at all. We stayed there on our first-ever Disney trip; it holds such wonderful memories!

I also think it has the best food court of all the mods.

Then again, because of the economy lots of DVCers are renting points and you can get some pretty good deals....

Chin up, you know you'll get back there somehow! And the Grand would be awesome for Chelsa's Sweet Sixteen!

Kathy

It has been a rough year for so many people! I remind myself that we are still so very fortunate to be trying to decide what to do for our Disney vacation. It could be so much worse.

Charles and I really liked CBR, and I agree that the food court was fantastic. Since we would have our car down there, I think we would use it a good bit instead of dealing with the buses.

To self.....Quick, get the duct tape! Don't say a word!

COV_DuctTapeMouth.jpg

:lmao:

Sorry Jackie at the GF dream ending. You are being smart... which is hard to do. Darn tax returns!

I hope you still get to go to WDW... I think you will be happy just going and staying anywhere. I totally understand wanting to stay on property too.

:grouphug:

Darn tax returns is right! I was so bummed about that!

Thanks, Laura! I know we will still have a great trip no matter what! It just stinks to have to rethink everything.

Oooohhhh nnnnnooooo! :sad2: (can you hear my whiney voice?) :rotfl:
I think if Chelsea has mentioned CBR that's what I'd go with, and try for the GF for a sweet sixteen. (Or even a happy 21st during food and wine. :rolleyes1)

It probably sounds just like my whiney voice! :lmao:

I'm soooo sorry Jackie! That's awful news, but I'm glad you were keeping it a secret from Chelsea...

I know it will all work out in the end. CBR or renting points both sound great. We loved CBR last year & I'd love to rent points sometime too.

Thanks, Amy! I wish I could just decide what we are doing, but I am still going back and forth about everything. It's very hard for me to pick a resort. :rotfl:

Sorry about the disappointment about the trip! I definitely know the feeling of canceling a trip, or changing dates, or letting go of things you wanted to do. I also know how it is to let go of a trip for the year, which I have chosen to do because of financial reasons, and because we are going Jan. 2011 and I just don't see it being a smart option for us to go twice- so close together.

I'm sure she won't care where you stay- if you're at Disney! and there could be other special things you could possibly do for her bday around the Grand Floridian- maybe a dinner on her bday, or a family photo shoot at the GF. I'm sure disney can help you come up with something.

And since you can't stay there this time- just don't tell her, and then maybe next year you can surprise her with the resort and explain then why you didn't do it before- or something of that sort.

Either way, going to WDW for a bday present is the best gift ever- no matter where you stay! :goodvibes

Good Luck with your planning!

Thank you, Jen!!! I know it will work out one way or another, and we will have a great time no matter what!

Jackie--I'm so sorry to hear that GF is out! That stinks but I'm sure you'll figure out something great for your family--you always do!!! :goodvibes

Thank you, Becky! I need to buckle down this weekend and make some decisions. I have been wishy-washy for too long.

sorry to hear about the change in plans...I just began the process of pricing out what it will cost for PeepFest 2012 and if I do what I want to do, it'll be expensive. No WDW in 2011:sad2:

I feel your pain.

CBR--I like this resort. It has a bad rep because of the size and busses, but awareness if half the battle. I never had too much of a problem with either because I knew what i was getting.

Pop-I am partial to it....but I stay there solo.....

Thanks, Jordan! We have enjoyed our stays at both CBR and Pop, and really, deep down inside, as long as I am staying at a Disney resort, I know I will be happy.

Aw CP, this makes me sad everytime I read it. I was wondering when the update would be. I say, either option 1 or 2.
Since you know that CBR is awesome, since you've stayed there before, that may be a really good choice for Chelsea, it's nice and relaxing. But, it's always fun to try and new resort too, especially if it's Bay Lake because you're still on the monorail route and you can visit the GF.

I say price it out between these two options, see the best price you can get from renting from DVC and decide between these two. Good luck!! :thumbsup2

Thanks, Jess! I keep thinking a stay at Bay Lake would be so much fun!!!

Awwww....Jackie big hugs to you right now!!! I'm sorry you are having to change your plans...however I think if CBR is somewhere she would like to stay than CBR is where you should go!!! I know you and your family will still have a great time there!!

I have to tell you I'm getting a bit nervous...with moving in our future and trying to find a job in the times when I know teacher jobs are going to be cut everywhere! I'm hoping I will be able to line up something in TX, hence why we are waiting on DVC. Like you I would kick myself if I couldn't get something and we had that payment. So we'll wait awhile, but I have to agree with others...the temptation is there especially knowing I'll be going back! But I know what you are feeling in regards to that!!!

Big hugs my friend!:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

Thanks, Jen!!! All of these decisions are so hard to make. Sure wish we got paid more as teachers, and then we wouldn't have to worry about any of this.

Jackie I'm so sorry that you won't be able to stay at the GF but really any hotel will be great as long as you get to go

Thank you, Jo! When it is all said and done, I know we will just be happy to be at Disney!

((((Jackie & Charles)))

Okay, I know you guys don't know me but I've read all of your TR (and loved them all imensely!).

Let me say that I think you are so brave for making the hard choice. It totally sucks having to think of the future and not just wishes, but you made the hard choice and you and your family will be better for it.

That said, let me give my not-so-humble opinions of your options:

1.I think renting DVC points is a great idea, especially if you stay in an EPCOT resort. When you & hubby went to F&W, didn't you say how much you wanted to use Anita's "private" enterance? I think the kids would get a blast out of this too, since not too many people outside of DIS know about it, it would be an extra "bragging" story when they tell their friends! Plus, just walking around the Boardwalk is an attraction in itself! Stock up on quarters so that they can use the binocular-thingy in front of Beach/Yacht club.

2. Again quoting from your F&W trip report, you said that your kids would love CBR. Since you are going in "beachy" weather time, I think that will add to the magic of the resort for them.

3. If you decide to go with POP, I still know you'll have a blast. BFF and I stayed one night over New Year's, and it was very nice. It has its own bus system, and even though we had our own car (like you guys), it was nice to park it and have someone else do the driving and not take much extra time with buses vs.driving ourselves. The theming is just TOO CUTE, and we didn't even get to walk around too much! All in all, I highly recommend this "value" resort!

4. Like so many others said, there will always be a time for GF. My personal vote is for sweet 16, since that gives a few years for things to improve, and your kids will be a little older and would probably enjoy it even more than they would've this year.

Please, please keep us posted, I'm so anxious for my birthday trip (still over 280 days away!) that I love living vicariously through yours and others' trips.

Welcome!!! Thank you for all your thoughts!!! I really appreciate it, and I hope you will keep posting! :goodvibes

So sorry about the GF Jackie. I know how much you wanted to do this for Chelsea but like PP have said it may be more special for her "Sweet 16" birthday. I love the feel of CB. We stayed there in 2004 & really enjoyed it as I know you & Charles liked it last year. No matter where you decide to stay at least you will be at Disney.

LOVE the comment about the resort to Charles:lmao:
I need to learn more about renting points. That sounds like a great option for future trips. I keep going back & forth about buying DVC. My DH does not want to buy unless we can pay for the whole thing without taking a loan. That mean a few more years (at least) but I get the resale emails every week & am always so tempted!!

Keep your chin up Jackie & whatever you decide I am sure it will be a wonderful birthday trip!!

Thank you!!! I know what you mean about DVC -- those resale emails are so tempting. :goodvibes

I am so sorry about the GF Jackie  I hope everything works out for you financially and your extended day pay returns in the very near future.

You and your family will enjoy a trip to Disney no matter which resort you choose. And the GF isn't going anywhere. When you can, you'll stay there.

As for your options, I think CBR or POP are perfect choices. Plus, you'll still get to use your PIN. However, if you can swing it, DVC would be a terrific deal. And since you make at least one trip a year, it's totally worth it. My whole opinion of DVC changed this weekend. Changed so much that the GF is out for us too. I blame Anita's tr :rolleyes1

Whatever you decide, you'll have a GREAT vacation.

Thanks, Jen! Congrats on buying at Bay Lake!!! What a fun place to stay!!!

Where is this TR? I would love to read it. Especially if it changed your opinion...

It is WigdoutDisMom's trip report -- How Much Did I Pay for This Self-Inflicted Fun? She is a riot, and we have a lot of fun over there!

Hi Jackie! My heart broke for you reading your latest update because I can relate to what you are all going through. Bryan works for the State of NJ and he has had furlough days too with up to 9 more expected this coming fiscal year and he has had wage freezes too and hasn't received any type of raise since July of 2008 and he has started contributing more towards medical benefits! It STINKS!! I applaud you though for making that difficult decision not to stay at the GF. maybe just you and she can have tea there together? She will be happy to just have the great surprise of a trip!!! I can honestly say that if it weren't for DVC I don't know that we could afford to go again this summer either! I know you have done lots of DVC research but if you need any help or questions answered, you can PM me!:goodvibes Hang in there!:thumbsup2

Thank you, Diane! I can't believe Bryan has had nine furlough days!!! That's craziness!!! DVC is so tempting to me -- I can't tell you how many times I have run the monthly budget to see if I can fit it in somewhere.

SO sorry that the GF is not going to work out!!! I think that taxes are way more important than monorails, though ;)

I think that your DD will enjoy any surprise trip, no matter where you stay :goodvibes Can't wait to hear where you book!

Thank you! We always have a good time wherever we stay, so I am feeling better about the whole thing.

So sorry that the GF is not going to work out.:sad2:

However, I can absolutely vouch for CBR - I think you would love it. It has a fantastic tropical feel to it like no where else on property. And that wonderful pool! With the beating steel drums in the background! Nothing else compares!:cloud9:

Yes, I love the monorail resorts, and I will pay for them when I can. But bang for the buck is definitely with CBR. ;) It'll always be my avatar!:)

Charles and I stayed at CBR in October and loved it. I think the kids would have a blast there.

So sorry Jackie! I'm afraid to get started on our taxes but I better just get it over with.

I think Caribbean Beach sounds nice, especially if she has requested it in the past.

Thank you! I was very shocked at our taxes. I am not sure why we received so much less this year. :confused3

I'm so sorry you can't do GF, but there are alot of other less expensive resorts.

Hearing about idiots cutting teacher's salaries realy irks me. Perhaps your Govenor should spend a day in a room full of pre-teens and see if he still thinks cutting pay is a good idea.:headache:

I agree, Cherie. I think if our lawmakers actually spent the day with school-age kids in a classroom, it would change their whole view of the education system. I have always said it would make a great reality show.

Jackie, I'm sorry to hear the GF isn't going to work out this year; but you're right, Chelsea didn't know it was an option and so it's not as if she's disappointed.

I would very much vote for buying DVC points. It might be just the same as staying at CBR and then you could try out DVC accomodations before you decided to buy in.

But CBR is also a VERY nice resort and I'm sure you would really like it there, too!!!

Keep us posted on what you decide!

Thank you, Katie! DVC is so tempting to me -- I feel like an addict trying not to buy another fix. :lmao:

Jackie, so sorry to hear about cancelling on the GF, but any trip to Disney is better than being at home right? And the GF isn't going to run away. You can always get back there for a later trip at some point.

I know exactly what you mean though. I had been hoping to swing a deluxe for my Oct. trip this year, but due to some recent changes it's not looking likely.

Thanks, Crissy! Any trip to Disney will be fun! I am thankful that it is still on the radar even.

Oh CP.....

I am so sorry that things did not work out for your top secret trip to the Grand Floridian, but I have to agree with Charles.....its a room and there are so many other wonderful places to stay. You can have tons of fun wherever you stay and still have an awesome trip. Save the Grand Flo for another time.

I think staying at CBR is a wonderful option. I really think its a pretty resort and totally enjoyed my stay there. I think renting points is another wonderful option. As far as purchasing DVC.....if you are feeling stretched right now, then its probably not the best time. But don't give up your Disney vacation - you love it far too much to do that!

Now I haven't read the last few days. I just read you announcement, so I have to go back now and really catch up.

Oh yeah......and the comment about Charles spending most of his time in the room - LOL!

Thanks, Mary Ellen! If I can just buckle down and make a decision about the trip, I know I will feel better. I don't like everything being up in the air right now. :sad2:

Well, that just stinks. :sad2: I am sorry. Furlough days for teachers-how dumb. We really liked CBR and the pirate room. That may be more for Connor though...Renting points would also be good. I know you will come up with something great!

Thanks, Mary! If we go with CBR, we will just get a regular room, but I know both kids would love the theming of the resort and that great pool!

Oh Jackie....my heart just sank when I read your post  I am so sorry about GF but you have some other really good options and I just know it will all work out whatever you decide. :goodvibes
This makes me so sad although your comment to Charles may have made me laugh just a little too much ;) I know HD has had great success renting points.....I don't have my point charts readily available right now so I am not sure about that time of year...that might give you a good handle on DVC too :confused3
Your recruits are here to help!!

Tracy

Thank you, Tracy! I am feeling much better about the whole situation. I just need to make some decisions and get things squared away.

oh no bummer Jackie!

Thanks, Annette! Our state is in such a mess right now -- I am ready for some new leadership. The worst part has been waiting to see how much funding from the state is going to be cut with the new budget (which no one seems to be able to come up with).

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that the GF won't work out this time...
But, like some others have mentioned I think the GF would be a wonderful place for a sweet sixteen. :lovestruc Wherever you choose to stay, you and your family will have a blast, I'm sure. :goodvibes

Thank you! I know deep down, we will have a good time no matter what.

I've heard nothing but great things from one of my friends and she's a disser. ;)

Thanks, Cass! I feel like I have too many options to wade through.

Sorry to hear the bummer news about the GF, but we help you get excited for whatever resort you decide on. They all have their perks...and besides, it's still Disney! :wizard:

I can empathize with you about the furlough days. My DH and I are both teachers and we are in the same boat in our state. :sad2:

Thanks! I didn't realize that South Carolina was just as bad with the furlough days. I always think about how wonderful it would be to move back there, but maybe I should save that for our retirement years.

Thanks, Lisa! I am very thankful to have a job right now. I just hope it stays that way! Best of luck finding a job! :goodvibes

:goodvibes

Yes, we do have a problem! :lmao:

Ok this isn't funny...but it is....

we scrape each month for many of the little things that are needed so we can have this time away from the normal drud...Disney is our release and frankly one of the few things I look forward to...I would be Eeyore w/ out my planning and going...

Keep your chin up!

Just the thought of not taking a Disney trip makes me into an Eeyore, so the scraping by doesn't bother me as much as it could.

Thank you! Now that the Grand is out, I worry about the heat and crowds in July. I have been questioning everything.

Thank you, Brook! Budgeting just stinks -- sure makes me wish we were wealthy! :rotfl:

Hugs!!!!

Thank you, Jen! Glad you enjoyed reading about the Diana exhibit! It was so neat! I am very ready for spring. It was 65 last weekend, and I was in such a good mood. Now it is cold again, and it makes me cranky! ;) Every time I think about postponing the trip, I think, "But I can't miss the Main Street Electrical Parade!" :rotfl: I was pretty bummed about the Grand to begin with, but as long as we make it to Disney, I know we will have a great time.

:goodvibes

Oh, I like the idea of sending Charles and Chelsea off to do something. That's a great idea! :goodvibes

So, since I posted last week, I have decided....

NOTHING!

:rotfl:

I have traded in my Charleston Princess crown and am currently wearing the crown of Queen of Indecision.

I have run numbers until I dream in Disney Fuzzy Math.

A couple of things I have come across:

If I buy our tickets through Undercover Tourist with the Mousesavers link, we would save $65.

If we don't do the dining plan with all of its summer surcharges and Connor being 10 now, we could save almost $200. That's a lot of money! We don't usually like to eat dessert with our counter service meals -- we would much rather buy Mickey ice cream bars, and knowing my kids, they won't always want to eat off the adult menu.

So, I am thinking of just putting all of our food money on a Disney gift card, buying our tickets from UT, and using the room only discount on CBR or renting DVC points.

Of course, on the flip side of this scenerio, is my all-consuming desire for DVC membership. I have also run numbers until my head feels like it is going to explode.

See, I have accomplished almost nothing this week in regards to the trip! Nothing has changed since last Saturday. :rotfl:

Hi Jackie! i just recently found out that when staying on DVC points you are not subject to the "summer surcharge" on the dining plan. That helped sway my decision back to the regular dining. Just wanted to let you know!:thumbsup2

Wow, that would save a lot of money! Would use still do any table service OOP?
You need your CP crown back!!

Sometimes it's good to just take a break from all of the thinking and number crunching. When your mind is at peace, that's when the perfect solution will hit you. Or so I like to think. ;)

Not sure if you knew I have a new PTR going. I'd love for you to stop by if you get a chance. :goodvibes

Another queen of indecision here so I sympathize. But let's just call it considering your options carefully, shall we? All great options. $200 is quite a savings!!

Rumor has it that there is a "big" DVC announcement coming next week...:rolleyes1 No idea what it is but hoping it comes with some major incentives...
