if you've entered the photo contest this year and your camera isn't showing up here, either it's listing it's model as something different than you expect in the exif data or the exif data is stripped from your photo.

I'm looking at adding a similar list for photo hosting sites. It will be interesting to see what is popular amongst the posters here.

I added brand names in red for clarification on the listings where they didn't come out.

Funny...your top 10 is probably pretty close to the order of manufacturers by sales of cameras, with the exception being Panasonic which is likely ahead of Fuji and Kodak at least, and including P&S, maybe above Pentax and Oly.

Obviously it's hardly scientific but interesting. :) I've been busy with "real world" enough that I haven't entered any contests this year, unlike past years where I'd enter most. Guess that moved the Pentax number down. :)

It's sort of interesting that the list is dominated by DSLRs, probably more so than in previous years. Obviously PnS shooters are much more common - are they just not entering the contests? Not hanging around the Photography area? Probably a bit of both.

The list of models might be more meaningful if Canon didn't dump all Rebel models into a single camera designation.

I'm not sure that they match up with actual sales, at least in the DSLR realm. Granted, Amazon's sales figured are hourly so they are pretty fluid, but four of the five top-selling DSLRs there currently are Nikons. From what I've read, Pentax has also been outselling Sony in a number of markets. Amazon would, again, bear that out - the K-7 is #16 currently, ahead of the body-only T1i and T2i, and the white K-x is in the top 25 also. You have to go down to #36 (past the K-7 kit at #27) to get to their top-selling Sony, a body-only A500. The A550L is #81 and the A330L is #90. The Olympus Pen is doing well at #26, and their top DSLR is the two-lens E620 at #46.

I don't find Amazon all that useful a source for calculating sales by brands or models - unfortunately there are too many factors that make it either inaccurate or insufficiently detailed. First off, the cameras are listed by kits - so one camera model might be on the chart 3 different times with various kit lens combos or body-only, making it hard to judge actual rank. Second, there are no totals - cannot tell if #5 is outselling #6 by 3 cameras or 30,000 cameras. Third, it favors brands with stronger internet presence, while completely eliminating retail store sales - some brands that have no presence in big box stores or camera stores end up with bigger numbers of sales online as it is their only source of sales. Fourth, at least in the case of Sony, they essentially have two or more of every level of camera, splitting their sales up into too many subdivisions to get an accurate tally - entry level for example is littered with A230, 330, and A380, each of those with any of 3 different kit combos. That's 9 different subdivisions in the Amazon rank for essentially 1 class of camera. Fifth, Amazon stats on our site do not tally worls sales, and some brands may be doing considerably better or worse in certain countries. (I won't even go into #6, which is about a site owned by Amazon that doesn't do any favors for some brands, while really laying out the hugs and kisses for others).

No disagreement with anything you wrote there. You can also add that because the sales are hourly, the numbers are extremely fluid based on short-term price drops, rebates, mentions on deal websites, etc.

It's interesting just for the fun of it, not unlike the cameras used in Dis photo contests. :)

I do not doubt that your findings are correct. The photo contest winners are very talented individuals and I am sure they are using DSLRs. I am a P&Sr who enters a contest every so often. I do agree with Groucho that the majority of photos are taken with a P&S, we (Me) just are not at the same level as the contest winners.
I am not complaining or putting anyone down, I prefer the the "snapshot" type of picture and am proud of the pictures I take. I also drool over the fantastic pictures taken by the winners.
BTW we know have a DSLR (Canon Rebel XS) and I am interested in how well I can do. I enjoy the advice given in this board and keep them coming.
