We debated between the regular and the Fire too. We decided on the Fire about a year ago and we LOVE it! We *thought* we only wanted it for reading but now we use it for so much internet too. I find myself grabbing the Kindle if I just need to look something up quick, send off an email, etc. versus getting out the laptop.
It is AMAZING for travel (no need to bring a laptop if the hotel has wifi) AND it houses all of my books and games. It is literally ONE thing for me to bring when I travel versus a couple of books, a couple of magazines, a game or two, etc. With the rising costs of even carryons travel bag space is at a premium. The little extra you spend on a Kindle Fire pays for itself in no time!
As for glare, hubby has anti-glare on his but I think it distorts the font. I have just a clear (not matte...) protector and yes, it can have glare. I've never had trouble reading but I will say that I don't do much outdoor reading on it. If I experience a glare I just adjust the angle I am holding it at and problem solved.
All of that being said, if you are deadset on ONLY a reading Kindle I would get the new Paperwhite. I can't imagine not having a backlit reader.
