Too many kindles - which one?

Get the regular one. It's just called Kindle. It's the cheapest and it's pretty much just for reading.

If I were to buy now, I'd get a Kindle Paperwhite.

I own a three year old Kindle (keyboard) and love it.

The addition of some lighting on the Paperwhite would be the reason I'd choose that one now. I'd likely get the one with ads because the ads don't hinder your reading and it costs less. Plus, some of the ads might come in handy. I hear one of the first ones people usually get is for a discount on a cover/case.

I'd get the Paperwhite too.

I've used the Keyboard Kindle for a couple of years now with the lighted cover. I bought one of the Touch models and returned it because I liked the Kindle Keyboard better. But if I was buying, that Paperwhite lighting might be enough to nudge me away from my beloved Kindle Keyboard.

I have the Kindle Keyboard and love it. I got the one with special offers because it was cheaper, and I love that too. People complain that they don't want "ads" but they are just your screensavers, you never see them when reading or anything. I've gotten some GREAT deals from them. Like choose a book for $1, free $5 for amazon mp3 or amazon video, money off a Kindle accessory, money off a grocery item, money off a toy, etc.

Are you positive you just want it for reading? I mean 100% sure?

If you even think you might want it for anything except reading, get the Kindle Fire.

I thought I would just want mine for reading also, but ended up with the Kindle Fire, and **LOVE** it!! I play games, listen to music, and browse the internet on it.

Either the Keyboard 3G or the new Paperwhite for the same reasons listed above.

I love my Keyboard 3G, and I love the 3G part because I think it's the only model left that will actually surf the Internet with the 3G and not just buy a book (which came in handy when we vacationed in Panama).

My daughter has the Touch. I don't like it.

I had a student bring in her Paperwhite for me to play with today. The lighting is AWESOME but would still take me a lot of getting used to as it's a lot like the touch! I am actually considering at this point though moving over.

For what it's worth, I have the Kindle App on my ipad, Thrive (Android tablet) and phone and much prefer to read on the Kindle than any of those because of the shiny, glare screen like would be on the Fire so personally, I have no desire for a Fire as a reading device. If I bought that it would be as a "toy"

I have an anti-glare screen on my Kindle Fire and there is no glare whatsoever. I had issues with it before I got the anti-glare screen, as sunlight made reading almost impossible, even with the background light turned all the way up.

JUST for reading I would do the Kindle Paperwhite.

....but personally I would do a Kindle Fire HD, a lot more flexibility in use. :thumbsup2

I have to agree with the above posters. I have a Kindle 3G keyboard... It is my most frequently used item. If I were buying one now... hmmm, it would be a tough decision between the paperwhite with 3G or the Kindle Fire...

It would honestly come down to what I felt I could spend because, for me, the 3G has been a huge bonus. I have the Kindle that has the Fire "expeimental settings" so I can actually log on to facebook, my email, amazon, etc with the old black/gray/white screen.

The Paperwhite is best for reading. The older Kindles were like reading off of cardboard. It worked fine and was better than holding a big heavy book but the Paperwhite gives you just the right amount of light pointed just where you want it for best reading.

The Kindle Fire is a great, inexpensive table for watching videos.

We debated between the regular and the Fire too. We decided on the Fire about a year ago and we LOVE it! We *thought* we only wanted it for reading but now we use it for so much internet too. I find myself grabbing the Kindle if I just need to look something up quick, send off an email, etc. versus getting out the laptop.

It is AMAZING for travel (no need to bring a laptop if the hotel has wifi) AND it houses all of my books and games. It is literally ONE thing for me to bring when I travel versus a couple of books, a couple of magazines, a game or two, etc. With the rising costs of even carryons travel bag space is at a premium. The little extra you spend on a Kindle Fire pays for itself in no time!

As for glare, hubby has anti-glare on his but I think it distorts the font. I have just a clear (not matte...) protector and yes, it can have glare. I've never had trouble reading but I will say that I don't do much outdoor reading on it. If I experience a glare I just adjust the angle I am holding it at and problem solved.

All of that being said, if you are deadset on ONLY a reading Kindle I would get the new Paperwhite. I can't imagine not having a backlit reader.

Some of the older Kindles have that including the Kindle Keyboard. The Paperwhite does not have speakers or an earphone jack.

Get the Fire HD. I bought it about two months ago. I mainly wanted a reader, but I was getting ready to go on an international trip and thought I might find the WiFi convenient. I was surprised to find that I used it more for WiFi than for reading, and I'm really surprised to find that is still the case now that we're home. I don't have a tablet or laptop -- if you do this may not be pertinent to you.

One more piece of advice. . . when you decide which one to buy, don't buy the first cover that pops up as there are ones with great ratings at a fraction of the price. I got a Fintie one that included a screen protector and stylus for about $14 including shipping.

For the Paperwhite, I recommend rooCASE Ultra-Slim. It's $10 and doesn't add much weight or size to the Kindle. Love mine.
