Too late too book for January?

I am planning a trip with my fiance for a week come January 8th 2013. I'm in the process of reading everything about how to rent DVC points and such, but I have a quick question: have I missed my window to rent DVC?

Am I booking too close to my travel date? It was a semi-spur of the moment decision to go which is why I'm only asking now.

Thanks!

Edit: Seems I've found my answer by reading: as long as its within 30 days of desired reservation date and the rental is available its all okay. Can someone just confirm that for me or tell me if I'm wrong.

Reservations can be booked the day before your arrival in a perfect world but availability is the issue. The DVC members start booking 11 months before arrival, the longer you wait, the less chance of getting the resort or room size that you want.

Thats what I thought.

Thank you for the reply Bill.

You won't know until you try but be aware that a week that begins Jan 8 includes marathon weekend. That weekend, actually Thursday through Monday of marathon weekend, is high DVC demand time.

I would definitely make your request immediately as there is little (if any) availability at this time in January. The "within 30 days" policy is only for members wanting to offer existing reservations. Members who are offering to make reservations using their points have no restriction other than 11 months ahead at their home resort and 7 months ahead at other DVC resorts.

Good luck! :)

before i owned DVC and was just renting, i was asking 3-4 months out and had trouble getting responses from owners. i figured out it was due to low availability so it would have been a waste of their time to check and get back with me.

so it's theoretically possible to rent "last minute" (which for DVC is farther out than you might expect) but i wouldn't be that picky...the larger resorts like SSR (maybe OKW and AKV-kidani) are probably your only choices, if there is anything available at all.

A savvy member wouldn't book a reservation 30 days out or less unless they were paid in full before they turned over their points to book or unless they already had a reservation to sell that had not been cancelled. If for some reason you backed out before you paid, they would be stuck with points in holding. And if you wait too late, you are not going to get anything at all.

If they already had a reservation that had not been cancelled, it would probably not be able to be modified or changed.

We just had to drop the first day of our upcoming trip. We now have 33 points in holding. We tried to add another day at the end of the trip and nothing is available at the resort we are staying at (and the room category we've booked). We are on the waitlist, but that isn't any guarantee either.

We have another trip coming up for the marathon, but we can't add a night to that stay until we are 60 days out from the start of the reservation.
