Too late to change shoes?

I went by my local running store at lunch and was chatting with some of the staff. I mentioned that I was going to be running in the Minnie Marathon but had gotten sidelined for a couple of weeks because of an injury. One of them offered to do a foot analysis for me - I had this done back in January when I bought my current running shoes (same store different location). He said I should be in a shoe with even higher motion control because of my flat feet and my knees.

I know I'm suppose to replace my shoes every 500 miles or so but I don't think I've quite reached that yet. I had my chiropractor look at my shoes and he seemed to think they were fine for running.

Should I think about changing running shoes? I'm under the impression it's too close to the Minnie to do that. Of course, I don't want to be running with the wrong shoe.

For reference, I have the Asics Gel Kayano 13 and he was recommending the Asics Gel Revolution.

What do you running experts say?

It is definately not too late to change shoes. Modern running shoes are so soft and flexible that they break in super quickly. I ran the 2007 WDW full on a pair that I'd run in twice, for a total of perhaps 10 miles, with no trouble.

If the new shoes fit well, feel good, and give you no trouble in a couple of training efforts you should be fine. Notice I did put in "should be," but I think lots of us have had similar experiences.

You can also wear those spankin' new running shoes around the house for a few days, which will also help them adjust to your feet and your feet to them.

Good luck

Craig's right. If they fit correctly, you could do up to 8 or 10 miles in brand new shoes. If I'm doing over 12 or so, I try to get a few short runs in frirst. GOod luck with the new shoes!

Thanks for the quick replies Craig and Carrie! I'm going to talk to my chiro and PT tomorrow. The shoes felt nice walking around the store but not too different from what I already have. I guess I won't know unless I buy them and try running.

Running is not quite as inexpensive as I had originally thought it to be :rotfl:

I needed new shoes for the 1/2 in January, I bought 3 pair before I went back to Nike. I could not find the same pair I had previously purchased. Of course, less than 1 year and they've moved on..

Regardless, I went to the store and spoke with the young man there, found some that he thought would be similar to my others and they were close. I had no problem with them and had less than 20 miles on them by race day. No blisters. I remember Dave (windwalker) saying that you should never have to break in good shoes - they should just work for you and he's right, when their correct no break in necessary.

Bunny,

I agree with the rest, get a couple of runs in them and if they feel good wear them at Minnie. I run in that same shoe and I love them.

Good luck.

I'm not an expert runner, but I do work in a running store where we do a gait analysis on all of our customers. While we recommend replacing shoes every 400-500 miles (give or take, of course), it is more important to be in the correct stablilty. If your stablity level changes, it's best to go ahead and go for the newer shoes(if money isn't an issue, of course! lol) Being in the wrong category of shoe can, over time, cause lots of problems.

From what I've been told, the technology in the shoes today is so much better than years ago. The need to "break in" shoes like we used to isn't the same...so some short runs should be ok for you. This is mainly to make sure you are happy with the shoe-make sure it feels good on your feet, doesn't rub, etc.

Good luck with the Minnie!!

Just an FYI - I have had to go up a full size for the Asics Foundation and a half size for the Evolution.
