Tony's or San Angel

Now that Jiko has done away with the short rib, the mole poblano at San Angel Inn might be my favorite dish in WDW. and the ambiance is just fantastic.

Thanks everyone for your responses. We're sticking with San Angel Inn. I'll report when we get back how our dinner was.

Stop in at the tequila cave before or after -- or before AND after -- your meal, and you might not remember enough from that night to file that report!

I like both of these restaurants. I had good food and service at both. If I had to pick one, I would go with San Angel. It has an edge over Tony's for food quality. I love the atmosphere in the Mexican pavillion, too.

I think both can be hit or miss. Some dishes are definietly better than others. I would go with San Angel based on atmosphere, but be prepared for it to not be "americanized mexican". We ate lunch there in May on a whim and thought it was pretty tasty.

I didn't like Tonys in 2008, but it was our last night, so dont think i was really in right mood! I had been raining really heavy, so we were soaked! We were sat at a horrible table near the glass conservatory bit. The food wasn't very nice.

Tony's isn't really bad, it just isn't any good. It's below average, but costs a fortune. The atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired, too. You can get much better food at Olive Garden for like half the cost.

We were there 3 weeks ago, and I agree completely with this statement. Tony's was a waste of a dining credit. Only my overly-forgiving DW was willing to say Tony's was even "okay". We won't be back.

We stopped in the Mexico pavilion and checked out SAI, and I wish I had gone that route instead of Tony's. Even if the food was as pathetic as Tony's, at least the ambiance is better. The family made me promise we would book SAI on our May 2012 trip.

Ive had lunch and dinner at Tony's and our lunches have always been much better. My first time going to SAI will be in February so I am looking forward to it. And as another posted mentioned, the margarita bar is right there so if my food stinks I'll forget about it quick enough after LOL

Tough one but I would go with San Angel only because after a long discussion with one of the staff members last October they told me they all knew the restaurant had a lot of problems and they had gotten a warning from Disney and they were going to improve things.

Based on the quality of the food at the Tequila Bar that comes from the same kitchen I assume they were on the correct path.

For some people the issue most likely is the style of Mexican food they serve.
For me it was not - this was one of my favorite places and it went downhill over the last few years IMO.
It seems like such a waste of a beautiful space.

I know I have said this before but I would love for them to add a Mexican street food plate with tamales and the like.
They could update them with gourmet version of three or four street food items.
I have been told that the duck tacos on the starters menu are very good.

This would satisfy many of the people who are not happy with the menu as it is and still offer real Mexican food with a gourmet flair.

Tony's

We had a good meal at Tony's, everyone was happy with their food. San Angel was too bland for us. We have really good authentic not tex-mex food in our area and were hoping for anything similar. Our food at San Angel just didnt have anything going for it, it was edible but so, so boring. I dont want my food dripping in red sauce but something, anything to make it beyond a hunk of meat for Dh.

Awww poor Tony's!!!! My family and I used to go to Disney a few times a year and we would ALWAYS eat a good breakfast there or dinner....I"m talking like over ten years ago....I'm not a breakfast fan and I loved eating there...Two years ago when I first went back to Disney my sister and I ate there for a late lunch..Maybe it was what I chose I think I ordered lasagna or baked ziti or something and it was totally average...it also was like barely warmed up...Service was average too..definately NOT the way I remembered it...my sister felt the same. As for San Angel....we loved going there because they had this awesome chicken dish...it was a nice atmosphere and good food...nice and we could always get in without ADR....they must have changed the menu because what we used to order was no longer on the menu...whatever I ordered was ordinary..but my bro in law ordered some meat dish and his was the BEST...long story short...I would def pick San Angel....check out the menu first and see if anything interests you there...it's nice getting a spot by the water too...

Choosing from the two I would definitely say Tony's. San Angel is just really really bad and very pricey non authentic Mexican food served in the dark by the El Rio de Tiempo. At Tony's the food is not the best at WDW but it's okay. The service is also much better.

I would go with Tony's. I would highly recommend the spaghetti it is very delicious. popcorn::

Some people make a bigger deal out of things? This forum is for opinions. If you like Tony's, fine... that is "your" opinion. My opinion is that it stinks. I don't see the need to downplay others opinions just because some may not agree with you. Obviously there are quite a few of us here on the DIS that hate it, so maybe its "you" who are too easily pleased. Maybe its because my grandmother who was from Italy actually cooked authentic Italian for me, and I am too picky. Nah, I don't think so; because I can tolerate most Italian like Olive Garden or Carrabbas, but Tony's is just plain old bad.

And see, I feel like you just downplayed that opinion. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean some of us can't have our opinions about liking it.

We almost never tried Tony's due to the bad reviews. Our family is pretty picky about our Italian. As a matter of fact, DH hates Olive Garden and won't go.

We tried Tony's this last Christmas and it was one of our favorite meals of the entire two week trip. Everyone loved it and said they can't believe they missed it this whole time. I had the salmon, and being from Oregon have had my fair share of salmon. I have never been all that impressed with the fish at DW. As a matter of fact I thought Coral Reef was a joke and everyone raves about it. That was the best salmon I have ever had!! It was tender and juicy and huge garlic cloves in the pilaf.

My vote goes to Tony's, though maybe that isn't fair since we have never tried the other. But, one thing we have learned is if you want to try it, then go for it. You just may just find a gem, which is what we did in Tony's:lovestruc
