Tony's or San Angel

I know both of these get bad reviews but we want to do something new and thought we would go against the grain for a change.

Suggestions??

If you must try one, I would go with SAI. We just ate at Tony's last month and well.... Lets just say that if you want to know what it is like, go to the store, buy some canned Del Monte Spaghetti sauce (make sure it is canned because jar sauce tastes better and would not be authentic Tony's), get some frozen breaded chicken breasts, heat up the sauce and chicken and put it over pasta. You can even watch Lady and the Tramp while you are eating it if it makes you feel better. Can you tell we hated Tony's?

If I had to choose, I would be pick San Angel. Though I didn't really enjoy the food, the atmosphere was fantastic. Really, really unique - much more so than Tony's.

In my opinion Tony's (which I was eager to try) had plain out bad food and a normal dining atmosphere. Though the food wasn't my "favorite" at San Angel, the atmosphere was truly amazing.

I would say go for San Angel, stick to a basic dish, and enjoy your surroundings!

San Angel would not get any bad reviews from me...but Tony's would. Of course it's been years since I've been to Tony's (that's how little I though of it the last time I was there)

I think it depends on which park you will be in and if you have kids. I honestly don't think that there is a single place that has "bad" food. I think some people make a bigger deal out of things.

Some people make a bigger deal out of things? This forum is for opinions. If you like Tony's, fine... that is "your" opinion. My opinion is that it stinks. I don't see the need to downplay others opinions just because some may not agree with you. Obviously there are quite a few of us here on the DIS that hate it, so maybe its "you" who are too easily pleased. Maybe its because my grandmother who was from Italy actually cooked authentic Italian for me, and I am too picky. Nah, I don't think so; because I can tolerate most Italian like Olive Garden or Carrabbas, but Tony's is just plain old bad.

ok so I have been to both places and can honeslty say that SAI was way better than tony's.

I ordered the recommended Chicken parm at tony's and it was horrible, chicken tasted funny and it was covered in this horrible watery sauce. DH hated his as well I can't remember what we had. The server was rude and basically made us feel like we were bothering her if we asked for another drink! She even stood around waiting to see if she would be getting a tip. This was the only place we did not tip.

SAI was fantastic we got a water side table and waved to all the people in the boats. The food was amazing from starter to desert. The server we had was polite and friendly and not too intrusive. We will be going back there again in oct and we can't wait.

That is just my opinion and lots of other people would feel the exact opposite.

If you want to try them go ahead its your vacation.

I'd easily choose San Angel over Tony's.

Tony's has very good food. Read the reviews on AllEars. It has around a 7.5 average rating which puts it on par with all but a handful of top favorates. I tend to agree with the ratings. It's good decent food and staff but nothing exceptional.

San Angel is one of our favorates. Every meal we've had has been excellent and the atmosphere is tops along with a cute fun ride inside. San Angel gets love it or hate it reviews. I tend to think thats because it is not the typical Americanized Mexican food. You won't find much in the way of tacos, burritos or chimichangas. Thats Sonaran style Mexican food that so many are used to in the USA. For us, San Angel is tops!

We'll be eating at both on our upcoming trip.

We eat at Tony's every trip and have always had good food but we don't order the pasta dishes--we usually get Fish, Steak and pizza.

I read alot about how people hate the pasta sauces. I can't imagine going out to eat and ordering spaghtti. We 1st tried Tony's 3 years ago--we went anyway even though it gets bad reviews and have eaten there every trip--so now I choose places that sound good to me and then
make my own mind up as to if I like it or now.

Tony's is also a very beautiful Restaurant and
I look forward to eating there next trip.

Reviews can work both ways also--for some of the restaurants that others rave about we found them to be lacking and not good, but we've tried them for ourselves and know we didn't care for them.

We will also be trying SI this trip and will decide if I like if for myself.

Eaten @ both, liked both, but atmosphere at SAI is pretty sweet. Plus, there's a margarita bar a few steps away!

It has been a few years since I ate at Tony's, but I can still remember that I didn't like it. Most local Italian food restaurants are so much better. For the most part, I am not that picky. The only two restaurants in WDW that I didn't like were Chefs de France and Tony's. All others that i tried I have liked. If you need to eat near magic kingdom, you could eat at a resort restuarant.

Tony's isn't really bad, it just isn't any good. It's below average, but costs a fortune. The atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired, too. You can get much better food at Olive Garden for like half the cost.

I've always enjoyed San Angel Inn. I like the food, love the pavilion. So, it gets my vote.

What type of Mexican food do you enjoy? Most in the USA are used to one of three styles.

1: Americanized versions found in typical Mexican restaurant chains. These will have typical tacos, burritos, chimichangas etc. I find them rather bland as they cater to those that do not care for intense strong flavors whether spicy hot or not.

2: Authentic Sonoran style Mexican often found at smaller locally owned restauraunts. These can be quite good and quite authentic but sticks to the northern Mexico's Sonoran style which many in the USA relate to as being Mexican food.

3: TexMex style which blends American foods with Mexican flavors. Often lots of cheese, sour cream etc. Strong spices such as cumin not commonly used in Mexico are often used.

San Angel is none of these three styles. I find San Angel typical of foods found deeper in Mexico outside of tourist areas but with a bit of Sonoran style added most likely to appease the vast cross sections of people at WDW. For this reason San Angel is a love it or hate it restaurant. The quality of food is excellent but may not appeal to everyones taste.

My vote is for San Angel Inn! We love it there. I know it gets mixed reviews, but we have gone many many times and have always had a great meal. Service has been so-so on some of those occasions, but nothing major. We have only dined at Tony's once, and that was a few years ago. We really did not enjoy it. The food was just average, if that.

We ate at Tony's last year and didn't enjoy the food at all. We ate at San Angel last week (against my husbands vote) and we all loved it. It was actually one of his favorite meals of the week.
