Tonsilecyomy have questions re:disney

My dd has an accessed tonsil. It is being drained today and docs recommend removal in 2-3 weeks. We are supposed to go to disney may 28.

The doc does want it ASAP so it doesn't abcess again. She will miss 8 days of school it looks like.

How much school did your child miss? How long before they were better? She just turned 7 and weighs 60lbs and is 48 inches if that matters at all.

I am worried this will ruin her trip or make it impossible. I am also worried about the missed school. She is in a magnet school that requires an 80% average to stay in the school. Her current averages are 87-95 but I have no idea how they will take this. I know they will want me to put it off tell after school, but the doc was pretty animate that this infection will happen again if she catches anything from school and then se will have to have it drained again and wait longer to get them removed. Safest is removal as soon as she heals from today's procedure according to the doctors.

Would love to hear from anyone who knows about this kind of thing.

My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed the summer after kindergarten. We didn't take her out of school, but she was down for about a week.

She did great in recovery (was eating pizza 4 hours later). She drank a lot and ate a ton of popsicles.

Right after our Disney trip in 2011 (we took the kids out of school for a week in September). My son returns to school and that next Tuesday (yes, 2 days after returning home) he breaks his leg at school! He broke the head of the femur off going into the knee, he also fractured and dislocated his growth plate. He was 6 at the time. He missed another week of school, and was in a wheel chair for 8 or 9 weeks after that. He required surgery and temporary pins in his knee.

He did great, his teachers were wonderful and sent all of his work home for us. He caught up, and it was like he never missed a beat.

I had mine removed when I was 7, and I remember feeling like absolute crap for a week -10 days after, but it was OK, because I was allowed to eat all the jello and ice cream I wanted

I was going to a private school, and they just sent my assignments home with my younger sister each day, and they went back in with her in the mornings. Of course, my mom has a Masters in education, so she didn't have any problems keeping me on track. If you have a good relationship with her teachers, you might want to look into that option if she's going to be missing school.

You are smart to follow your doctors advice. Health always trumps school attendance. DS now 21 had his out in kindergarten. His doctor required that he stay out of school and home with a mature adult for a full week. We did and he did great. He was really fine to go back to school before that week was up. That was the year he missed way to much school. We took a fall trip not knowing that he would end up getting a really bad case of the flu and having his tonsils out later in the year. He survived and thrived. Is the trip after school is out??? In reality I would not change it even if it's not, she will be just fine. I would shoot for as early as possible to do the surgery and recovery time should not be an issue. Maybe rent a stroller if she is not back to 100% and spring for plenty of ice cream!!!

It sounds like your surgery would be very early May, so I wouldn't worry about recovery before your trip - plenty of time there, the standard is definitely 7-10 days and once she can eat normally again, she will feel much better much faster.
Is the trip also missed school days, though, or just the recovery? I certainly wouldn't hesitate to keep her out for medical reasons OR for Disney, but if she would miss a week of school for each, that might be tough.

The trip is after school is out. School is out May 24. Her teacher called to check on her and said she has already met all bench marks required for promotion except for one math test that she will give her a bit early right before surgery. Dd is super smart but lazy at times. Her only bad grades are when she is too busy daydreaming and doesn't do her work.

I worked as a Teachers aid for 3 years when I was younger and in college so I'm pretty good in that respect.

We did Disney last year and found out while in Disney that the ent wanted her tonsils and adenoids out immediately. It was scheduled for a week and half after we got back. She misses 5 days for our trip. Then broke her wrist 3 days later. Missed 2.5 days for that between pain and casting. Then the tonsils. She was a rare case and missed three full weeks of school. All said and done, she missed the last month of school. The school was great though. Even offered a tutor.

My 10 year old had his tonsils out last November around the Thanksgiving holiday. He did fairly well with it and was feeling back to his old self pretty much in 5-7 days. I will say that it did take him awhile to get back to having as much energy as he always did, so while she might feel fine afterwards but you might want to take it a bit slow to start on your trip. Just seemed like he tired easily at basketball games and such for a a bit.

You might want to check with the doc. I know my son was back to his old crazy self rather quickly but there will still restrictions. Swimming was one of them, I remember (though I don't remember how long). Good luck!

My dd had hers removed in March two years ago (2nd grade). She missed the week before spring break and the week of. She has a clotting disorder that required two weeks of no activity because had the scabs come off too early she would have had major bleeding.

DS was out for a whole week, but not feeling "normal" until two weeks post-surgery.

My DS had his removed when he was 5. He felt great for the first few days. About day 5 he started to get uncomfortable. The doctor had told us days 5-14 would be the worst and that was really accurate. Also he was not allowed to swim for a certain amount of time, maybe two weeks. I would check with your doctor on that before your trip.

Here, if a student will be out of school for any amount of time due to a medical reason, the child can have homebound instruction. This is free and involves a teacher coming by to make sure the student stays with their class on work. Each day of homebound instruction counts as a school day so that the student does not miss too many days of school. This might be something to look into, depending on what your district offers. In our schools, they count medically excused absences the same as a kid playing hookey and too absences means repeating the grade. A lot of students use homebound as a result of this policy.

My son was was out of school for a full week. The doctor did not want him at school because apparently anything rough can make them bleed and 6 year olds don't always know how not to be rough. He also insisted that he sleep in our bed for the week for the same reason. He was afraid if he started bleeding in the middle of the night, we wouldn't know it and he would choke.

She will not be able to swim at ALL for two weeks after the surgery. So, make sure that will not be a problem for the trip.

MY DD just had her tonsils out. We were told that she needs to be out of school for one week and restricted act. for 2 weeks. I read somewhere that you sould not travel for at least 2 weeks. (Not sure if you have to fly) I would check with your DR.

My friends kids both had theirs out at the same time. She and her DH kept taking turns staying home from work. She said it was rough but they got all of the caretaking over at one time. The kids were home 2 weeks and were fine after that.

My oldest had his out at the end of 4th grade - just before he turned 10. He was out for a solid two weeks. The Dr told us that typically they start feeling better at about day 3-4, then kind of get worse for a few days before starting to get better for good. That was exactly what happened with DS. He was in bed for the first three days, then his energy started to come back and his throat was feeling a "little" better, and he even went to a birthday party on the 5th day, but after about an hour, he was ready to leave, and started feeling bad again. It took a good 3-4 more days for him to feel better, then he slowly started getting his energy back. He was good to go back to his spring football team practices/games and school at the end of two weeks.

The doctor cleared the trip. That is why he scheduled it when he did. Far enough from the first surgery and 3 weeks before our trip. We are driving, live in Georgia so that's not an issue. They will be doing the version that is supposed to hurt the least where they cauterize it at a lower temp and it will be performed at a children's hospital by a pediatric ENT.

I'm also wondering if I should make home made Ice cream or store bought. The homemade usually coats your mouth and I'm not sure if that would be a good or bad thing.

I can't speak for kids, I had my tonsils removed in 2012 due to my tonsils abscessing and recovery was at least a month, 2 weeks and I felt fairly normal but couldn't eat anything 'hard' still. I have been told kids bounce back much faster though. I will encourage you to get them removed asap and not chance it. My tonsils abscessed in January, February, April, and late May. At that point the ENT said if I didn't schedule surgery he wasn't going to treat me anymore (I had been trying to put it off until my son turned 1 in August that year since he was still breastfeeding). The pain from getting the tonsillectomy was actually not as bad as the pain from when they abscessed.
