For years my family has gathered to celebrate St. Patricks Day by the traditional meal of Corned Beef with Cabbage...and a viewing of
THE QUIET MAN
1952 - Republic Pictures
Starring John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara

All of the interiors of TQM were filmed in Hollywood and all of the exterior shots were done in Ireland. There were exceptions, of course, like some of the scenes shot at the cottage after the wedding. Likewise, the kissing/storm sequence in the cemetery was done in Hollywood. The visit of Rev. and Mrs. Playfair was done in front of the actual cottage. A family by the name of "Joyce" was living in the cottage at the time. Likewise, Will Danaher's home was occupied and the family had to accommodate the film company by staying away from the windows, etc., during times they were shooting.

The wonderful scene where an angry Sean Thornton is walking home after an argument with Mary Kate and and all these seagulls fly into the air about him as he crosses a meadow was actually instigated by Maureen. They were between scenes and she noticed the gulls and suggested to Ford that if Duke walked through them they would take flight and it would make a good shot. Ford hurridly set it up and sure enough, the flurry of gulls took flight with grace and beauty that added tremendously to the panoramic scene.

To me, that the very final scene of Sean and Mary Kate running to the cottage in the distance is truly one of the film's most romantic scenes. The movie "The Quiet Man" begins and ends with almost perfect beauty and artistry. In between you have romance, action and the beauty of Ireland and one of its greatest gifts to America.

Do you have a family tradition to celebrate today?
:)

DH and I usually celebrate the same way GP. Alas, no corned beef tonite, but definately TQM. This is a movie we can both recite by heart, but never ever get tired of it. Barry Fitzgerald is an absolute hoot, and what a wonderful chemistry between Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne.

Enjoy your St. Patty's day GP.:D

Barry Fitzgerald is an absolute hoot

impetuous
Pronunciation: im-'pech-w&s, -'pe-ch&-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French impetueux, from Late Latin impetuosus, from Latin impetus
Date: 14th century
1 : marked by impulsive vehemence or passion <an impetuous temperament>
2 : marked by force and violence of movement or action <an impetuous wind>

:teeth: ;)

Ya knoe...there is now a lower fat/leaner version of corned beef :)

{It's still not a 'diet' food...but...with portion control...once a year...it's alright!}

OMG...I had to laugh out loud as my parents' had their yearly showing of The Quiet Man this weekend. I actually called there this weekend and was told to call back as they were in the middle of the movie!

Never interrupt my Italian father whilst he is watching The Quiet Man or listening to the Clancy Brothers :D

When DS and DD were little, they eagerly awaited the arrival of the Leprechaun. They never knew if he'd make his appearance the day before, the day of, or just after Mar. 17. The little green guy would sneak into the house during the night and just totally mess everything up. Chairs would be turned over, a rope or string would be used to tie various items together (maybe tie a colander to the leg of a table, etc.). Just a chaotic scene. The best part, which the kids really liked, was that the Leprechaun would leave candy in their shoes or hats. The kids loved this! They never knew when it would occur or what they'd find! (When they saw the rope, they were sure that the Leprechaun had tried to catch and tie up our cat!) It was a hoot! :bounce:

GP my favorite Movie! Tonight here also is Corn Beef [had it last night too], cabbage, potatos, stout or two ;) and watching this wonderful movie. So many favorite parts..but the horse that stops in front of the tavern automatically ROFL...I laugh every year :D

At our house the Leprechaun leaves chocolate gold coins. all over the house. He usually leaves a trail from each childs bed and out the bedroom door. I also provide coins for each childs teacher to leave on the childrens desks...They love it.

Very nice tradition GP.

We had corned beef and cabbage yesterday........Everyone is Irish today in our house.

We used to go to a little Irish pub in a town nearby. Every year they have live music, but the best part is the guy who tells jokes. They're so corny it's not funny. (You would love it! ). It was just a great night that I looked forward to. People are just so friendly and happy on that one night! Everyone wore their greenest outfits, some very nice and fashionable, some really tacky. There was always corned beef, boiled ham or shepards pie and green beer. It was so much fun! Especially if St. Patrick's Day fell in the middle of the week. I haven't been there for years. :( Hopefully next year! :bounce: <--- that will be me! :p No wait, I'll still be in school. :( Okay, the year after that! :bounce: :bounce:

Saints Preserve Us! I'd be think'in now that you'd all be Irish...especially today! :)

Besides.....5 miles be jurst ah 'strech' of yer legs!! :teeth:

That's a nice tradition GP!

My Mom makes Corned Beef and Cabbage with boiled potatoes, but I never learned how to make it.

I dunno! Are you a wee lad, about yay high, who laughs so hard that you can't be hearin' the joke, but you'd be laughin' anyway because his laugh is so contagious? Are you about 70 years young? Then that would be you! :p

Hey, aren't you supposed to be watchin' a movie?

Here, now! Be raisin' yer elbow!

May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven
half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

Here's to a long life and a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.
A pretty girl and an honest one.
A cold beer—and another one!

Listen to the sound of the river and you will get a trout.

We don't have any traditions for this day except for pinching anyone not wearing green.

But these sound fun, I might just have to do some of them next year. :)

GP, this is a beautiful song. :)
