Tonga Toast addicts - check in here!!

I tried Tonga Toast for the first time in Sept after reading about it on the boards. LOVED IT!!!

The Tonga Toast at Captain Cook's is exactly the same as that at Kona :)! Can't wait to have some in March, mmmmmm!!

We haven't been for several years, but are going for a week at Christmas...we already have two ADRs for Kona and can't wait!! I'm keeping in mind Capt. Cook's -- where is that exactly?

Capt. Cook's is the counter service place downstairs in the Poly. Go to the back of the lobby and turn left down that hallway. We went there for breakfast for Tonga Toast one morning and it was wonderful!!

I tried to make it at home and it was kind of yuck!:scared: I'll wait till our next trip to get my fix!

I am confessing my addiction for Tonga Toast. I ate it in WDW 3 times on our last trip, and made it here twice. Of course the Tonga Toast in WDW is better, but oh well. :)

Thanks for the reply!! Will be handy info to have!!

I, too, tried making it at home some time back...wasn't close and I never attempted it again (besides, if it WAS too good, I'd never get to have someone else <WDW> make it for me again, lol!!).

Thanks!!

My dh and I discovered Tonga Toast a few years ago, and we have it every trip for breakfast every morning that we're there. Yes, every morning, and we usually stay five days per trip! But we share one order, so we don't overdose on the sugar! We used to make reservations at Kona for our daily breakfast, but when they added it to the counter service at Capt. Cook's, we now get it there every morning, because we aren't tied to a specific time, and it's the same thing for so much less money.

We've also had the Banana-stuffed French Toast as they call it at Boatwright's at Port Orleans. They serve it with a strawberry-banana sauce. It is just as good, to me, but I ask for pancake syrup to put on it, to make it taste just like Tonga Toast, and I eat the strawberry-banana sauce by itself.

I didn't know it was at Rainforest Cafe.

I did get the recipe from Kona quite some time ago, but haven't actually tried making it at home. It doesn't sound like anyone has had much success at duplicating it. I wonder why.

I had Tonga Toast for the first time in 1979. My family stayed at the Poly and one morning my younger brother ordered the Tonga Toast. Of course we all tried it... and all ordered it the next morning! After getting home we couldn't remember the name and just called it "Florida French Toast"- Mom used to make it often for us- not as good, but pretty close.

Fast foraward to first trip as an adult... had to see if they still had it, but was a little scared I'd mess with my happy memory! I was happy to find it was still on the menu and boy, did it take me back! On a side note... DH does not like it :sad2:

On to 2004... my entire family takes a trip to WDW for the first time since that '79 trip. We're all married now and have kids. Naturally we made ADRs at the Kona and we all (parents/siblings) ordeded Tonga Toast. I can still hear my parents talking about how it was just the same as it was in 1979. Here's our gang right after breakfast (I'm on the front row w/DH & twins and my sibs are both right behind me):

Sept. '06 my family goes back to the World and of course I make ADRs at the Kona. We didn't get to go!!! :sad1: Yes, putting my children's wants before mine we go to the pool 'one last time' before heading home.

I'm leaving for Disney in just 23 days- this time with 2 other families that have never experienced Tonga Toast  (I know... can you believe it!) I told them they didn't have to go, but my family was going to the Kona Cafe and having Tonga Toast!!!! They thought it sounded like a kooky dish but were willing to go along with us. I'm sure there will be a few more Tonga Toast lovers to add to our happy group!

I just love Tonga Toast

I posted back in '05 on this thread that we were going to Kona just to try the Tonga Toast. It was good. We ordered one Tonga toast and one fruit plate and my DH and I split them and it was plenty. Going back this Nov and it's on my list of ADR's to make.

I'm kind of interested in trying their pancakes, too....those sound very interesting...maybe I'll find someone to "share" with!!

Can't wait!!

Once I dig out the slimy, nasty banana, I find Tonga Toast simply delightful! YUMMY!

Hmmm.....We're eating at Kona one week from Sunday but I'm allergic to bananas and can't have Tonga Toast. :headache: So DH is going to have to have it for me...When I made the ADR, the CM even specifically said "Have the Tonga Toast!"

We found a recipe on AllEars, DH suggested I substitute strawberries in mine. Can you do that?

I've never tried Tonga Toast :guilty: Does it taste the same as the banana stuffed French Toast at Boatwrights???

If nothing else, ask if they'll hold the bananas....I would imagine they'll try to be accommodating!! Have a great time!!

Yes, but they serve it with a strawberry-banana sauce at Boatwright's instead of pancake syrup, which is what you get at Kona's
