My first DSLR - a Canon T2i!! I hope I made the right choice - from the reviews it seems like I should be alright.

Does anybody have one yet? Seems like they are very hard to find. I am in Duluth MN and I had to buy one at the Best Buy in Roseville and have them hold it for me for a week until I can get there to pick it up (tomorrow!!)

There were seven left at the Best Buy stores in the whole region on 6/17. One each at four various stores, and three at the Roseville store. By the time I called Roseville an hour later, they had one left, and I got it! Apparently they're backordered now, so Best Buy can't even order them for a while. I feel so lucky to be getting this one! :cloud9:

I also got the zoom lens - I think it's 55-250? Was $300 but I got $100 off for buying it with the camera. The camera itself comes with an 18-55 lens but I've already played with that on the T1i and I know I want more than that.

I was really surprised that the Black Tie protection for $199 gives me FOUR years coverage on this item - I've never seen that long before! :woohoo: They said the only thing that is not covered is total submersion, and that includes one free replacement of the original battery anytime in the next four years. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me! :thumbsup2

So what do I need to know to get started?

I already bought two 8gb SanDisk memory cards (200 speed)... a uv filter... and a small DSLR camera case that I don't think is going to fit the extra lens so I'm trying to find a good case that will fit the camera with the 18-55 lens attached, plus the extra lens, but not be too awkward to carry around Disney on a sweltering hot day in August. I'd also like it to have a small space to store credit cards, cash, receipts, and maybe a lip gloss. Any ideas on that? :confused3:flower3:

And what else do I need to get me started?

On the bag, I would suggest taking a look at the Crumplers if you like messager style bags, they have various sizes.

As for what else you need to get started, Nothing is needed. Here are a couple of things that might be nice to get.

1. A better strap, the one that comes with the camera is not particularly comfortable. Take a look at Optech straps or Black Rapid straps. I have both and they are way better than the OEM one.

2. A decent tripod if you like to take night time pictures or pictures of fireworks ect.

3. Some sort of fast lens, if your looking to keep costs down, the 50mm f/1.8 is a bargin and will do a very serviceable job. (you'll need this for low light moving objects such as parades or dark rides)

Thank you. I think I still have a tripod somewhere, and I was definitely wondering about the strap and a fast lens. Good suggestions!

If you plan to bring a tripod and take night shots or fireworks shots at Disney, you will want a remote shutter release cable.

I don't think DS would ever forgive me if I set up a tripod at Disney :lmao:

But tell me more about this remote shutter release cable (just in case!) :rolleyes1

Congrats on the purchase!!!! I have the T1i, and absolutely love it. :cool1:

I agree with the suggestions on others things you might want to get. And I couldn't agree more about the neckstrap. I practically live at Disney, so I know how uncomfortable it can be with that stock strap. I just recently bought a Crumpler Industry Disgrace neckstrap, and it's great!!! And it has already been heat tested and battle approved for Disney. ;)

Thanks for the tip - I just looked at that neckstrap on Amazon and it's got GREAT reviews! Is $30 a typical price or can I find it cheaper somewhere?

Also, I'm looking at the Crumpler 6 million dollar home for a case. Has anyone carried that one around Disney yet?

I believe that $30 is the typical price. I might've ordered mine from Amazon; but I also did price comparisons.

I have the 6million Dollar home, it holds my 40d with battery grip with a 24-70 attached, a 70-200 f/2.8, a 430 flash and a few small accesories like cards and cable release etc. It is pretty much maxed with that.

But it might be a little overkill for what you have currently.

I definitely recommend the Crumpler Industry Disgrace strap. Best improvement in my camera for the least amount of money.

I am going to stand up on my soap box and tell you that I would either not use the UV filter or return it. The lenses you have aren't that pricey that if you should happen to scratch them that they will non-replaceable. The chances of you doing this is already very low and the chance of you doing this in a way that will affect Image quality is even lower. Cheap filters can ruin pictures, given your lenses I'll take a bet your filter was cheap.

So, if it was free, never use it, if you paid for it and it makes sense...return it.

I use one on my 17-55mm F2.8L but only because it seems to help dust from getting in this specific lens. Jury is still out on whether it actually does. I also have a 100mm F2.8L lens and don't use one on it because it doesn't have this problem. The protective filter for my 17-55mm cost $100 or so btw.

Did the person at Best Buy suggest you get the filter? I know that when I bought my T1i from there, they sueggested it to me. And not knowing too much about filters, I got one anyway. Plus, it was only like $12. I only used it for like one day, because I heard it can affect picture quality. That was a year ago, and I still haven't had any issues with my lens with no filter. I did keep it though, just in case I'm in some extreme weather condition (like a windy beach or something). But even that situation hasn't popped up yet.

For my 17-55 I tested it with and without filter and found no different in image quality. This is also what I found at night. There is a test out there that shows the results of different filters during the day and night...some are horrible some have no effect on the image.

The Hoya HD series is what I use for all my filters(CPL and otherwise) and are great with no effect on PQ. However, cheap sunpak(or other) filters aren't going to perform to this standard.

Ahhhh....you'll be a geek like the rest of us in no time. DS will get over it. Or you could always threaten to break out the photo vest if he has an issue with the tripod.

Once you get the bug to shoot fireworks, you won't be able to get by without a tripod. You can rent a locker to stow it in as you enter the park, and leave it there until evening and retrieve it just in time for the show.

The remote shutter release is a cable with a button on the end. It plugs into the camera and allows you to shoot without touching the camera. Pushing the button itself on a longish shot will introduce some blue into it.

You can get the remote shutter releases pretty cheaply on ebay.

Yep, the sales guy at Best Buy told me I NEEDED the filter! Sounds like he was just blowing smoke... I haven't removed it from the packaging, so I'll return it for sure! It was just a cheapo $10 thing.

Proud owner of my T2i for just over a month now. Previous owner of an XT and then an XSi.

LOVE my T2i. Almost sucked it up and bought a 7D this time. SO glad I didn't. Extra $$=Extra glass. ;)

Lucked out. I live in a relatively rural town and people weren't standing in line at the local Best Buy to buy one. Dropped by every few days for a few weeks and then sudddenly one day, I Checked online and it said my store had one in stock. I was there when they opened at 10:00. Yep. They had ONE in the locked case... for about 2 minutes of actually being open! :rotfl2:

LOVE it. You will too. Congrats!

17-55 f/2.8L??? I'm fairly certain it's not an L lens. Optically it is every bit as good as an L, but it doesn't carry the L designation.
