Tom Tom or Garmin??

I have friends with Tom Toms and they complain about them all the time. They love my Garmin when they are with me.

I used my mom's Magellion and I really liked it. Now I am in the market to buy one for myself. I will get a Magellion, I think.

I am looking to get one for my son for his 18th birthday. My nav system is built into my car, so I don't know anything about the free standing units. Can someone tell me if one is better than the other and why? And how much you have to pay for a decent one??

Thanks!!

Does your cell phone have navigation? We have found that our Droid has better navigation than our Nissan or Infiniti.

I've been a Garmin user for a few years -- I concur with PP that Garmin has a much easier interface than TomTom...

Plus, the Garmin 1350 LMT, which has lifetime maps & traffic, is on sale at Target this week for $159 (I've seen these go for the $180s at other retailers).

I would honestly save that money and invest it in a Droid. I have both the Tom Tom ($100) and the free GPS that came on my Droid X. The X is 10000 times better plus it takes and gives verbal commands. It's awesome!

Not exactly "budget-friendly" stuff, there...

I don't think many folks wants the added monthly expense of a smartphone bill (not to mention being under contract for 2 years).

Stand-alone GPS units, OTOH, do not require a committment/monthly fee.

We have both and we both love the TOM TOM better. Used to have a magellan but it finally died. I like that my tom tom can convert over to walking if you need it to

My Garmin will not only do pedestrian but can also go on a bicycle.

Yes my Droid X has navigation, but as I stated before I do not want to get my son a phone with a $30 data plan, and he is not due for an upgrade with Verizon for 18 months.
