I want to buy DH a Tom-Tom as a gift but have no idea which model to get. Can anyone make a suggestion?

Thanks!

Consumer Reports recommends:

Go 740 Live (traffic-ready)
One 140 S (traffic optional)

Ok - I'm still clueless - Iknow nothing about these things - can you explain :)

I would not buy a Tom Tom. I know several people who have bought them and they didn't work very well. All of those people have since bought Garmins and been very happy.

ok - I need to do more research - thanks. Anyone else?

My husband received a Tom Tom GO 730 as a retirement gift, and we absolutely love it. It has taken us where ever we have need to go, and always finds the way, and is easy to use.

We had to go to a Wedding this summer outside of Cincinnatti at a remote lake, and it took us right to the address--we were impressed, we would never have found it. When we left it was pitch dark, we reversed our direction, and we went right back to our hotel--we were sold.

We have traveled across country with it, finding hotels etc along the way, and it never lets us down.

Thanks for the tip - just bought a garmin

Is the consensus that garmin is better? (need to buy one as well)

I think so. I have talked to a lot of people and tried them out. Overstock.com has awesome prices and I had a 20% off coupon.

I bought a Tom Tom and was very dissapointed.
They have very little in the way of 'points of interest' loaded into the machine.
Points of interest are things like gas stations, shopping centers, atm's ect.
You have to go to a website and download user created files for all those things.
I returned it after about a few days and bought a Magellen and have been very happy

Garmin does have the better user interface but their routing is a bit weird.
Mine is always is taking me off the highway and taking side roads then getting back on even though I DO have FASTEST ROUTE checked.

Each time I put in a destination I have to check its routing first before heading out.
Others have had that same problem

I think my next gps will be a Tom Tom

We have a TOMTOM and love ours. My DH especially likes the feature that gives him two directions at once when needed. Knowing that we should enter a highway and immediately move over one or two lanes is a safety feature that is very helpful. Our friends' Garmin doesn't offer this feature although theirs does have a bigger list of restaurants, etc.

We used my fathers Garmin when we were visiting him and it was great. We came home and bought one for ourselves. Before we bought it we asked nim about his choice and he said he had two Tom Tom's and returned them both before buying his Garmin. We won't leave home without it.
Great device.

Oh PLEASE buy a Garvin! Please? No other reason than that we own stock in them :lmao:

ITA- I read the same thing. Tomtom is a european company, and has great coverage in Europe, but not so good in the US. Garmin is the best!!!
