News just reported that Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay was indicted on criminal conspiracy charges. Rules state he must step down from his leadership role.

I am curious if a judge will drop the charges.

I don't know anything about the quality of evidence and the applicable legal standards, so I won't comment of his potential legal jeopardy. But morally, he is a truly evil man

DeLay just announces he is temporarily stepping down from his leadership position.

INdicted for campaign fraud (I think I heard correctly).

Gee, couldn't have happend to a nicer guy...

Wow...Have to say, I really never expected him to be indicted. Figured it would be one of those deals where everybody and their brother knows he's guilty, but he gets off scott free because of who he is.

Here is a link to the CNN story: Delay Indicted, Will Step Aside as Majority Leader

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy !

Is this the guy that people were talked about in relation to question travel and golf trips and things like that??

Sorry I get them all mixed up...what state does he represent?

Tom Delay is actually my Congressman. I am conservative and believe it or not I am not a huge fan of his. My take on this thing is if he did wrong, then he should be tried and if found guilty convicted. I temper this whole situation by the fact that the indictment came out of Travis County, which is where Austin our Sate Capital is located. The District Attorney there is Democrat through and through and has a long reputation of going after Republicans. I'm am not advocating that the indictment should not have been filed just the fact that it might not go anywhere. Ronnie Earl the Travis county DA spends a large amount of his and his offices time pursuing political matters and according to friends in Austin not enough time going after criminals in Travis County.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but in the interum I'm not jumping and any bandwagons for or against, just a very interested third party for now.

:teeth: I guess this means I won't be getting any more of those "Tom DeLay would like to give you an award for your superb work in management" calls. I love messing with those people. :rotfl:

No that is Republican Ohio Gov. Taft.

More speculation. Having watched the trajectory of careers, both local and national, marred by allegations of criminality and spoken to many prosecutors, I have concluded that a significant degree as to who gets indicted is how big an SOB one is. A non-political example - Martha Stewart. Her "crime" is not always prosecuted, but she was such an SOB to staff setting them up that I think that factored in how she was treated.

Again, we don't know yet about the quality of the evidence against DeLay. But I feel certain that there the GJ testimony painted an unflattering picture about him as a person. And that matters, I strongly believe. The GJ may have asked the SA whether he could be charged resulting in the amendment to seek conspiracy charges. Delay was a classic bully that did more than exercise power to an end - he revels in pure meanness and attacks against opponents far beyond what is strictly necessary to accomplish his goal. Plus he has sold out so many.

Even in civil law, I have learned that the "quality of memory" of witnesses can vary based on how they were treated by the individual. Time and time again I have seen businesspeople that are abusive to staff suffer when those individuals are subpoenaed to testify in a case, and vice versa. When the target targets people right, the witnesses try to be honest, but tend to remember any helpful detail. When the target of testimony is a jerk, suddenly the witness will testify only as matters that are precisely remembered, and add no helpful context. And juries pick up on that. Also, when you have spent your life going out of the way to make enemies even when that wasn't necessary, don't expect anyone to stand by you when the chips are down - the daggers come out, to use the metaphor.

Methinks Delay is paying for a multitude of sins, not all of them legal
