I booked Tokyo Dining for our trip in May (mainly for DH). I've looked over the menu several times and cannot decide what my kids might enjoy and I'm second guessing myself. They are 9 and 12. They have had sushi once and enjoyed it, but I couldn't even say 'what' they had that time as it was a first for me as well. They are easy to please and willing to try knew things, but would probably be turned off by anything too "strong" (lacking a better description).

So does anyone have any suggestions?? I'd hate to take them there and end up ordering a boring american kids meal, but it would be worse if they got something they didn't enjoy.

TIA

Mmm...Tokyo Dining! One of my favorites. I love going there. They have the nicest waitstaff imaginable and the view is lovely. And the food is pretty good.

Tempura would probably be a good choice, since just about everyone likes fried shrimp and vegetables. Tokyo Dining's is pretty good, too...light batter and not too greasy. California rolls and the shrimp tempura rolls are usually a good bet, because they don't contain any raw fish. I also like their futomaki (a roll of mixed vegetables and sweet egg omelet).

An order of edamame (soy beans in the pod) is a hit with most kids, too. Isn't edamame now one of the "official" kids' foods, like chicken nuggets and mac-n-cheese? Every child I know eats edamame (or is this just a big city yuppie thing?).

As far as other sashimi/nigiri, tuna is probably the most mild-tasting and among the least challenging from a texture standpoint. The "fishiest" thing on their menu would probably be the salmon roe nigiri. I've found that most kids and adults really like eel sushi, once they get past the name. It's cooked and mild and brushed with a sweet sauce.

Enjoy!

We are planning on eating dinner there on our next trip and thought the tempura sounded good as well as they have the salad with ginger dressing...and there were grilled steaks/chicken. It seemed like a good variety for something other than sushi...

we have been to Teppan edo a lot so this will be a nice change;)
