Hi. a quick HELP, I have a christmas party tomorrow.
Our toilet seams to be leaking water on the inside, then every few seconds it would make a running sound for a couple of seconds. Its driving me crazy and I can hear the running sound a level down. HELP simple trick?:confused3

It's kinda difficult to understand what you're describin', but maybe this info will help you: http://home.howstuffworks.com/toilet1.htm

the float rises as the tank fills, at a certain point it shuts off the water filling the tank. If water is leaking into the bowl the float will fall and after while it will refill the missing water from the tank.

after a flush, a few minutes after, do you see water flowing into the bowl?

overall it is only a little wasted water. Not like a backed up sewer line, that could be a real problem during a party. Or any other time.

Take of the lid and lift up on the float. If that stops the water from running, then you need to adjust the float. Sometimes Just pulling up a little bit on the float does the trick. Just don't break it!

there is flap at the bottom of the tank that stops the water. Is it closing all the way?

Chances are that the ball flap (ballcock)at the bottom of the tank is slowly leaking. It's just going into the bowl, so no harm there. That is likely the trickling sound that you are hearing. When the water level in the tank drops low enough, the valve will automatically open to refill the tank back up to the appropriate level. That is the running water sound. Chances are, you just need to either adjust the ball flap to make sure it is centered and sealing properly or if that doesn't help, then just replace the ball flap. It's less than $10 at Home Depot or any hardware store.

Yes, do note that sometimes ballcocks will distort, become more (too) rigid, or otherwise no longer make a firm seal with the bottom of the tank. That's always been the culprit when we've had the problem the OP described.

I agree on the ballcock. Although I must admit that I had no idea the name of it, lol. I had those exact sounds for a while - just brought my water bill up a bit until we had the landlord take care of it. No harm, just annoying - though my husband swore he couldn't hear anything, I could hear it when the door to the bathroom was closed and I was 12 feet away on the couch!

tell me about it. I always hear clicking and dripping, even from different floors on the house. I even heard a snake crawling through the grass behind us when we were camping.

But when my wife says something it is all mumbled... hehehehehe seriously!
