Toilet height

What toilet height should I get?

  • Keep the 16 1/2

  • Return it and get the 15 1/2

  • I don't have a clue about toilet height either!

Who would have thought buying a toilet would be so darn complicated?!?!!?

Our house bathroom toilet is not working well at all and we are finally getting a new one- woohoo! (Sad that I am excited about that.) I found the one I wanted and bought it but now I am rethinking the height. Our current one is only 14 1/2 and I think a bit too low. (That is also the height of the two other ones in the house that are not being replaced.) The one I bought is 16 1/2. But then I was in another store and saw the same one but in 15 1/2. Now I am thinking I should maybe get the 15 1/2 one instead.

A little background on my family in case it helps- DH and I are average height. We have two small kids who use the potty- 2 1/2 and 5. We will still have two 14 1/2 toilets in the house.

Will we REALLY notice the difference? Should I go back and get the 15 1/2 one instead and return the 16 1/2 one? Any opinions and insights would be appreciated! Thanks!

Keep your old toilet and just replace the guts :thumbsup2

Our old toilet was like a $25 cheap throw it in the house because it needs a toilet special. Definitely needing a new one. WAY too many problems with the old one. Not replacing the whole things is not an option, unfortunately.

Keep the 16.5 unless it makes you feel like you're on tippy toes on it. The kids will grow into it :)

Keep the new, taller one. That's "chair height" and it is easier for anyone you might have visit who has mobility issues. It's nice to have at least one restroom that you can steer grandparents and visitors to....

We replaced our 14 1/2 toilet with a 16 1/2 toilet on our main floor because my sister (who has mobility issues) was unable to sit down/stand up independently from the lower toilet. I have to admit...I didn't like it at first, but it's great for my aging relatives! :goodvibes

keep it. You may need it some day.

I had a stroke and was surprised how difficult it was to get up from the low ones.

Now that my knees are so bad, I have ALL high toilets. It's just easier than sitting on one that is elementary school height.

Yes, yes, and YES!!!! It is so much easier to get off of the higher sitting seat, if you have bad knees. It was so much easier for DH to use the higher one after he had bypass surgery.

I'll play the counter point because I'm young and am far off (hopefully) from having mobility issues. I'm 6 foot 2 inches and I HATE our taller toilet. We have two different heights and one of them I am up on my tippy toes when I use. It is sooooo annoying.

we just had a new one installed in one of our bathrooms and our plumber talked us into the taller one. one bonus he said that with boys (ours are 11 and 9), it will help, well, keep things neater. I hadn't thought of that at all until he said it, but I have to say I am so glad we took his advice. it really has made a difference!

I think it has been helpful when dh's grandmother comes to visit as well.

Mine is 17 inches and I love it. I hate normal height toilets now. I am 5' 10" , dh is 6', dd is 5' 6" and ds is 6' 2", but we've had this toilet since both kids were small. We used a stool when they needed it, but that hasn't been an issue for years.

My problem is that it needs replacing and all I can find are 16.5 inches. I hate to give up that 1/2 inch!!!

Do you happen to have a Menards near you? That is where we got ours from. Just checking on line, they have 12 that are listed at 17.25 in height.

We replaced our master bathroom's toilet with the higher one about 2 years ago. It took a little getting used to but we have now replaced the guest toilet also. the salesman tried to talk us out of the higher for when we have grandchildren, but I told him that I would just have to purchase a stool for them! I love our higher toilets!

Ours are 17.5" and have completely spoiled our creaking old joints. Problem is -- now when we visit tinkletoriums with shorter potties, they sure seem a loonnnnggggg way to get down to business!

We replaced one of our toilets with a "high seat" for Christian. Now that my knees are so bad, I find I prefer it. I plan to replace the toiliet on our master bath soon. When I sit on a regular toilet it is hard for me to rise. For that reason I often use the handicapped stall in public restrooms

They use to call the 17" toilets (With Seat get it's to 17") handicap. Now they call them Right Height - and they are. It's what I have in my bathroom. Although I do have the shorter one in the bathroom my daughter uses.

I always recommend the American Standard Cadet III. It will flush anything and I mean anything without clogging. You get what you pay for. The cheap toilets do not work. You Tube it if your curious. It's amazing.

We got the American Standard one that said that claims you can flush down a whole basket of golf balls! Ok, we're going to keep the taller toilet. Thanks everyone!!!!

I've also seen them labeled "Luxury Height"
