I was walking round ASDA today and came to the jams etc. I was looking at all the different falvours and it struck me that orange jam is the only one that had it's one name!

Does anyone know why marmalade is called marmalade and not just orange jam?

according to wikipedia:

Marmalade (Media:marmalade.ogg) is a sweet conserve made from fruit, sugar, and (usually) a gelling agent. In English-speaking usage "marmalade" invariably refers to a conserve derived from a citrus fruit. Typically the recipe will include sliced fruit peel and will prescribe a long cooking time in order to soften the peel; indeed marmalade is sometimes described as jam with fruit peel. Such marmalade is most often consumed on toasted bread as part of a full English breakfast. The favoured citrus fruit for marmalade production in the UK is the "Seville orange", Citrus aurantium var. aurantium, thus called because it was originally imported from Seville in Spain.

No idea Tim but you may want to consider taking up a hobby or something if you really have nothing better to think about ;) :rotfl:

Well there you go - you learn something everyday (not necessarily something useful but something!) :sunny:

Tim, if you're intereted, there are two explanations I've found for why it's called marmalade and not orange jam.

The first: Apparently, years ago seville oranges were being unloaded at the docks in Scotland and the woman shouted at the boy unloading them 'Mair, me laddie' hence Marmalade

Second: Mary Queen of Scots final meal was allegedly orange jam on bread. When it was delivered to her, the guard supposedly said 'Mary, me lady' hence Marmalade

Both sound like complete BS to me :rotfl:

Also, I discovered that Marmalade can only be so called if it's made with citrus fruits. When made with any other type of fruit, it is called jam.

I feel educated now. Thanks ;)

Mmmm now you've got me remembering Rose's Lime Marmalade on toast :yummy: So its not just Orange :)
