To replace Buzz or not

Having a bit of trepidation about this topic. My 3 year old son has one of the traditional Buzz Lightyear action figures, who has been through some "battles" with Zurg. As far as appendages go he is down to one arm, having lost both feet in a flying incident and his other arm in a stairs event. My father, who is joining us on this trip really wants to buy my son a new one to have him wake up one morning and find his Buzz all better (Disney Magic), but I am worried my son will recognize the new one as a Buzz imposter and get rattled. So I turn to the parents of the DIS, for your thoughts?

I don't think my son would have ever gone for a replacement of his favorite toy.

What about getting him a new Buzz that is a little different (maybe a smaller version) but without pretending that it is his original one that has been repaired?

My kids would not appreciate that at all. They tend to be attached to the "broken" version. I agree with a new but different buzz instead.

Ask your son if he would like to make a wish on Disney magic to get his Buzz back to shiny new. If he says yes, you could help him wish, replace it while he's sleeping, and he'll be thrilled. If not, your dad can treat him to something else.

Not a bad idea at all. I'm sure there will be many variations in WDW for him to choose from.

Also a great idea. Let him make the call.

I am all for Disney Magic, but it kinda sets a bad expectation that Disney Magic can fix the broken things in your life. The only thing that can really do that is hard work and determination.

I wouldn't replace the old one. My mom had my favorite doll replaced when I was 4...dolly came back clean with new hair. It was too strange and I never played with it again.

Just find a different version to join the wounded Buzz in the fight against Zurg. And maybe an alien too.

I just did this with DS3. He watches a lot of Doc McStuffins and came to me last week and said that his stuffed kangaroo'a ear was broken (his leg was also bent funny) and asked if I could make him all better. We had a replacement in the closet in case of emergency and for months I'd been worried that if he lost the kangaroo he wouldn't accept the replacement because it was so new looking. I told him I would fix it like Doc, took the kangaroo and went in the closet for about 5 minutes. When I came out, I handed him the new kangaroo and his whole face lit up! He said that the kangaroo looked so pretty and he was so happy that mommy "fixed" it. Now, if he asks me to do it again, I'm in trouble, lol. But for now, he is even more attached to it than he was before (and I didn't think that was possible). Point of the story is, if he watches Doc McStuffins, you could probably get away with it!

We tried to by my son a new Woody a few years ago and he refused. His Woody is missing his hat and his voicebox, and is well loved and played with. DS got a Buzz on our last trip to Disney and Buzz is becoming very well loved as well.

I agree with the other posts. We tried to replace an Elmo when my DD was about 18 months old. Even at 11 months old she knew it just wasn't quite right. I tried to tell her I had just washed it. She gave me the strangest look, like you are a crazy woman. LOL!!

Not a downer, a sage piece of advice.

:rotfl2: Well said!

Haha, he is a huge Doc fan, but I don't think he'll trust that I have her skills. I mean, I don't even have a stethoscope. :lmao:

Haha, I've gotten that look a few times!

Great advice all, my DW brought something up earlier that sealed the deal. If we pulled off the switch, the only fool proof way to make sure we're never found out is to make original Buzz disappear. There is no scenario that could play out where I could bring myself to do that. Broken or not, Buzz is a family member to my lil' guy.
