To renew seasonal AP or not?

My Florida resident seasonal AP expire around nov.11 and we are planning a trip sometime at the end of January/beginning of February.

Would it be better to renew or wait till we go and start fresh?

I think you should renew. You are really close to your vacation and you will save some money. Also calculate the days of your trip and see how the prices compare. Calculate the renewal price and then the non renewal and see which is more economical

I have decided not to renew mine but my next visit is probably September 2015 so that's 8 months of non usage. There are other reasons I'm not renewing but yours seems strictly a time issue.

At the end of the day it's your decision. If my visit was that close I would be tempted to just renew.

You'll find it makes more $ sense not to renew. Here is how to look at it financially:
  1. Take the cost of your Seasonal AP and divide by 365.
  2. multiply that number by the number of days between your expiration date and your next visit.
  3. If the result is greater than the difference in the new and renewal price, do not renew.

Yes, I'm a recovering bean counter. :teacher:

We did a back-of-the-envelope calculation of $25 per month savings if we let our AP expire. The renewal will be activated on your current AP expiration date. If you pay full FL resident price for a new seasonal pass, it will have the start day of the first visit. You appear close to break even in cost but you lose a few months of future entrance. If I were in your place, I would let my current AP expire.

There is also a risk of ticket price increase. In the past we could avoid increases by purchasing FL seasonal passes at AAA, before their allotment ran out.

We decided to renew based on the current FL resident ticket prices. You can get the 4 day ticket (with certain blackout dates) for $199. To renew the seasonal pass was about $287. Since we are going for at least 6 days next year, we figured the $88 difference was worth it.

Now, I am sure there is a technical way to decide if it really was worth it, but my brain doesn't work that way!

Like a PP said-- definitely depends on your situation, length of upcoming trip, etc.

Just booked Jan 31-feb 5 and tickets expired mid of this month so will probably not renew and buy new.

As a fellow FL res AP holder (except we have the no blackout version). I would renew, rates change too often.

Awhile ago we were in the same situation of not knowing what to do. We decided not to renew and get the extra months from the date we purchased our new passes. In fact, I asked the same question on the DIS. Someone gave this advice: If you don't plan on a WDW trip for at least 3 months from your renewal date, it is usually a better deal NOT to renew, but to simply buy a new AP when you finally do get back to WDW.

Besides, you never know. Something could come up and maybe you won't take the January trip.

One thing not mentioned. With you being a FL resident, what are the chances you will have a spontaneous visit to the parks before your next planned vaca?
If you are back and forth with the decision now, I would recommend renewal just to have that capability
