To our UK Friends...

"(W)e shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, ..."

Winston Churchill, June 4, 1940.

"[D]o not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigour, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time. "

Winston Churchill, October 5, 1938.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I agree 100%!!!! At least we (Canada) don't look like morons like Chretien made us look after 9/11

He was such an embarrassment.

Oh don't get me wrong we did alot to help out after 9/11 apparently Canada had some of the first troops on the ground in Afganistan along with the British SAS so we did help out after 9/11 we just didn't go to Iraq which I agree 100% with. Also I am not a Liberal supporter I am a Conservative supporter and I can say in this I am glad they were not in power during that or we would have people in Iraq dying needlesly.

I agree Charles ~ don't get me wrong ~ I mean the way our PM took so long to go to NYC and Washington and to offer our condolences. he was embarrassing because he made it about politics and it was about human lives and nothing is more important than that. It doesn 't matter whether you are liberal or PC or green or democrat or conservative. We are all humans and I feel he never let the American's know how sorry Canada was soon enough after 9/11. On that note I don't want to turn this heartfelt thread into a political debate. I feel physically sick about what happened in London today and will put all those victims in my prayers tonight. God Bless :grouphug:

I agree he was slow off the mark for that and that was sad for all of us here in Canada. My FIL is a firefighter in London and a number of his co workers went and helped out in NY even though they were asked no to go by the city of NY and they were appreciated after it was all said and done. I hope everything gets back to business and we can help out over in London with anything they need.

Thank you for your support, this is truly a terrible time (again) for the people of the uk but Londoners are nothing if not resilient, They will bounce back and most of London is up and running almost to normal today.
Once again thank you its good to know someone out there likes the brits! ;)

PS I have visited Canada several times and you have the most wonderful people and scenery

On behalf of my fellow London Disbord members, as one who was in the City of London yesterday, thanks for all your kind words of support.

It has been a roller coaster of emotions the last couple of days - from the ectasy of winning the Olympic bid on Wednesday to the agony of the terrorist attack yesterday.

I believe the spirit here was summed up by a poster on another board who said that he felt proud to be a Londoner on Wednesday when we won the Olympic bid, and prouder yesterday by the resilience shown by our fellow citizens in the face of such a heinous attack. We are not about to yield to terrorism - as for the terrorists they shall reap what they sow.

I was pleased to read this news report from the Mayor of Paris, given our competition of the day before:-
Paris stood shoulder to shoulder with London yesterday as Anglo-French rivalry gave way to unity in the face of terrorism.

"Right now, we are all Londoners," the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, said, one day after his city lost out to the British capital in its bid to host the 2012 Olympics.

Mr Delanoë, who complained of London's unsporting behaviour in its bid to hold the 2012 Games, dismissed Paris's Olympic disappointment as insignificant compared to London's ordeal.

"Life has been endangered in a friendly city," he said. "The competition is derisory compared to the blasts."

With your kind greetings, thoughts and prayers, I guess its fair to say that you too are all honorary Londoners now.

Finally, I do not believe the link with our support for the US in Iraq should be overstated as a cause of these attacks - the people who do this have launched attacks in Kenya, Tanzania and Bali in the past. They are willing to attack anyone anywhere as long as it is a soft target. In doing so they simply underline the need for the War on Terror.

God Bless You All.

And another thank you from a fellow London UK DISer

Our Mayor, Ken Livingston summed things up well: _

"This was not a terrorist attack against the mighty and the powerful; it is not aimed at presidents or prime ministers; it was aimed at ordinary working class Londoners, black and white, Muslim and Christians, Hindu and Jew, young and old, indiscriminate attempt at slaughter irrespective of any considerations, of age, of class, of religion, whatever, that isn't an ideology, it isn't even a perverted faith, it's just indiscriminate attempt at mass murder, and we know what the objective is, they seek to divide London. They seek to turn Londoners against each other and Londoners will not be divided by this cowardly attack"

"I wish to speak through you directly, to those who came to London to claim lives, nothing you do, how many of us you kill will stop that flight to our cities where freedom is strong and where people can live in harmony with one another, whatever you do, how many you kill, you will fail."

For the record - I have a residential course in Central London all next week and I will be going and travelling on the buses and Underground as usual.
