To Infinity and Beyond - Becoming a Better DopeyBadger (Comments Welcome)

Sorry to hear about Steph's grandmother passing away. Even when it's somewhat expected, it's still never easy.

Thanks.

Congratulations on getting into Disneyland race weekend. It's my "home" park as it were so I'm quite excited to be able to run there again. While the now temporary cancelation of Disneyland races wound up playing an unexpected part in me taking on the marathon, I'm very excited to return to the place where it all began. And maybe I'll finally get to run through Galaxy's Edge. I hope. I really hope.

We're pretty excited to try something new. G was stoked that I was able to get her a 5k bib as well, and now it's all about what bigger and better costume she has planned for the next go around. I'm pretty sure I'm in trouble...

Thanks! By brother was released yesterday after a little over a week stay in the hospital.

Excited about getting in, and seeing what DL is all about.

Let's just freeze this forecast in time and take this one.

2023 DopeyBadger Spring Racing Season Prediction Contest

Alright posters and lurkers, let's play a prediction game! It's one of my favorite things to do pre-race. It's also something I do with everyone else on their training plans. Go through the process on deciding race day goals and pacing strategies all based around a possible finish time. I want to hear from everyone.

But here's the twist this time around- It's going to be a season long contest. I'll explain more below.

Please don't be concerned that your time prediction will have much of an impact on my chances. I could run really well, or I could crash and burn. Anything is possible. Here are some rules:

1) Predictions must be made after this post either in this journal, to me verbally, or on my Strava account.
2) Only one prediction per person per race.
3) Predictions must be in by 48 hours prior to the race.
4) Predictions can be as close as you like to another person’s guess. So, if someone says 3:45:00, you can guess 3:45:01, or the same time (3:45:00).
5) A prediction must be in time. Thus, a guess of "you'll do your best" or something similar is appreciated but not valid.
6) In the event I don't finish, the race is cancelled, or I don't have an official time (unless pre-decided otherwise), then there will be no time recorded for that race.
7) The winner receives a mystery item via email.
8) An important one - Given you accrue points over the season based on your standing in each race, it is to your advantage to play in all predictions. Although it is theoretically possible for someone to miss a prediction game and still win the season series.

I reserve the right to change these rules however I see fit, as after all, this is for fun.

How to play?

Simple explantation

You choose how fast you think I'll run a race when we're about a week out from the race itself. Don't worry I'll remind you.

Longer explantation on how it'll work

-You choose how fast you think I'll run a race when we're about a week out from the race itself.
-You will then be ranked against the other participants based on the net time you were off by. For example, Person A guess I will run a 10k in 39 min, person B guesses 41:02 min, and person C guesses 39:45 min. I end up running 40:00 min. Person C will be given the number of points based on the total number of participants. So if there are 20 people playing, and Person C was the closest (higher or lower) than they get 20 points. Person A was next closest they get 19 points, and Person B was next and gets 18 points.
-At the end of the season, the person with the most points is declared the winner.
-In the event of a tie, I'll determine a tie breaker to be decided at a later point.

Current Race Schedule

This may or may not change based on how the 2023 season plays out.

2/24/23 - Princess 5k (registered)
2/25/23 - Princess 10k (registered)
2/26/23 - Princess HM (registered)
3/11/23 - Shamrock 10k (registered)
3/26/23 - First Call HM (not yet registered)
4/15/23 - Parkinson's HM (not yet registered)
4/30/23 - Non-Cancelled HM (not yet registered)

If you have any questions about Disneyland, feel free to ask. I've been there multiple times each year since 2006, not counting the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. There are a lot of differences which can be very useful to know.

Thanks! I spent most of yesterday trying to learn the logistics of the runDisney races. Where the security gates are, what street I walk from my hotel to the race, where the pre-race area is, what time the corrals open... things like that. I've ascertained most of it from some youtube recap videos I watched.

Disneyland Registration

I figured I'd write a brief recap for myself on the Disneyland registration. I had planned to register for the 5k for myself and G, and Dumbo Challenge for myself. If I didn't get into the 5k, then I wouldn't register at all.

I had a total of 12 windows open.

Work Laptop - Safari, Chrome
Personal Laptop - Safari, Chrome, Opera, Firefox
iPad #1 - Safari, Chrome
iPad #2 - Safari
Chromebook - Chrome
iPhone - Safari and Chrome

I had all pre-loaded with the runDisney logged in, and sitting on the Disneyland homepage. I also had the Chromebook booted up with my email because it was SOOOO slow. I feared if that was the one that got the best time to enter, then I'd have to move quickly to email myself the link.

I started refreshing a single screen on my work laptop at around 8:45am local time. At some point (don't remember exactly) the link for the 10k went live briefly. But by the time I clicked it was a dead link. It didn't end up going anywhere for anyone. I was refreshing like a fiend up till 9:00am local, but the links never appeared. I slowed down on the refreshes after that, and just kept reading the DIS to see once anyone else got a link to appear. At around 9:14am is when the links were present, and I moved each of my 12 windows into the queue. Upon entering the queue, none of them had an assigned time.

At around 9:21am is when the first windows started to populate with an estimated wait time. Every one of mine came up at "over an hour", but at least one person on the DIS at that same time had a 51 min wait. So I knew it was possible to have less. Within a few min, the windows seemed to refresh and give me a new wait time. But not at the same time. The queue on my iPad #2 was the initial lowest at 35 min. But then I got a 15ish min wait on my iPhone Chrome window. All the other wait time were either "over an hour" or between 50-59 min. I copied the link on my iPhone and sent it to myself in an email. I opened the link on my work laptop, and it worked fine.

It didn't actually take 15 min, but it was close. I figure I started typing in information around 9:33-9:35am local. By this time there were already several people on the DIS with confirmed entries. I added a registration for myself for Dumbo. I answered quickly past the unnecessary questions. I added a registration for myself for the 5k, and then for G. I missed my "relationship to minor" drop-down and was prompted to go back and finish that. Finished typing in the other information, and then paid. I have time stamped that I finished at 9:40am.

Dumbo sold out at 9:48am (27 min after opening), and the 5k sold out at 10:03am (42 min after opening). Of my 12 windows, only one would have enabled me to get into Dumbo before it sold out. About half of my windows would have enabled me to get into the 5k before it sold out. So I'm counting myself pretty lucky I got either.

I feel super lucky since I just had my laptop and iphone. Was not expecting the delay, so I was actually getting the kids ready for school when I saw someone had posted that registration was open. Filling out all the race info for POT was nerve racking - didn't realize it was unnecessary but I didn't want any hiccups. I think it must have been much harder registering multiple people.

For NYC marathon I had 1 laptop, iphone, and 2 ipads and multiple browsers.

Also, I put in my recent marathon time - would they convert to see what corral I should be in?

ETA: I see there is a huge thread that answers my question!

I figure you probably found this image, but this is what you want.

And yes, your M time in the 3:30s is plenty fast enough to get into Corral A for both M/Goofy/Dopey and/or a HM.

Looks like good pool weather. Not so great running weather.
