good evening, due to a financial windfall my dream of owning DVC may become a reality in the next few years... I ve done a lot of reading in the last few days but have a few questions.
My family is me, ds17 ds15 and dd13 and DH. Due to the children's ages and imminent departure to uni, would it be appropriate to purchase points for a 2 bed (prob at Okw, as we pref that to ssr having stayed at both) or do I just buy enough points for a 1 bed which is what we ll need in the next few years anyway?

Is a point a point?? I get that home result means I get priority there only, but there seems to be a massive difference in price so am I missing something? We are the type of family that only use accompdation to sleep and or to chill by the pool. All the extras have little interest to us (right now, but that may change when we re not with kids!!)

As we d be hiring a car (am in the UK) location really isn't that much of an issue, in fact we loved the serenity of OKW rather than the bustle of ssr. Staying on the monorail is not something that d interest me (ok maybe for a night lol but not long term).

My plan would be together enough points for a week each year, and then bank etc so we can stay for two weeks every two years if that makes sense. At the moment that d have to be August but once kids are off would prob be sept or F&W...

Would buy resale and have looked at AKV for if I buy for future needs, or Okw if I buy for current needs, not a massive difference in outlay costs.. So what am I missing and what's your advice?

One thing to consider between OKW and AKV is that most OKW resales out there expire in 2042 vs 2057 for AKV-also AKV currently has the highest MF of all the WDW DVC-things could change but it seems like there is usually avail to trade from OKW into AKV (and vice versa) at 7 months (except AKV value and CL rooms which seem to generally require the 11 month window)

Tbf in 2042 i ll be 70 so that ll be us done with transatlantic flights lol!! So if I understand what you re saying correctly, go for the Okw (cheaper MF cheaper purchase cost and use points for AKV as our needs change...?

I highly recommend that you e-mail the Time Share Store (a sponsor of these boards) and ask for their brochure regarding DVC resales. It really gives in depth information that mirrors anything you would get from a DVC guide. I am kind of against taking a DVC tour to get their information when one's intention is to buy resale (not that you said you were doing this). But the Time Share Store's written info should answer most of your questions.

You could buy a couple of smaller contracts at the same or different resort and sell one later if you don't need the points.

I wouldn't buy in your situation. You won't be going back consistently until 2057 living in the UK. And When kids are in college family trips will never be more scarce.

Just rent a house or rent points when you go. No reason to invest in something you can't get to easily and consistently.

It's not difficult to get into Okw, SSR or AKL during the 7 mo mark during most of the year. From what I understand, AKL value and concierge is the main reason for having the 11mo advantage , but if you're ok with the other rooms, booking at 7 mo has thus far not been difficult.

If you trust current booking patterns, then getting SSR is the most economical choice. Lowest maint fee/resale price and longest contract length.

I think if you want GV at Okw, having the 11mo advantage may matter as well.

So... I would buy SSR in light of where you want to stay (yes, a point is a point is a point at the 7 mo mark). I would also buy for future needs, as I believe in buying less rather than more as an initial purchase. You can always bank and borrow for now. Congrats!

We were in exactly your circumstances when we bought. We bought for now. We have had two trips that were fabulous in 2 bedrooms and now we are already down to 3 travelling. We are now happy booking 1 bedrooms and going more often and for longer

One thing we did do is only buy half the points we need and bank and borrow so we do t feel we have too many

I also love the serenity of OKW and AKV/Kidani ranks as 2nd favorite resort. I've never had issues booking AKV at the 7 month mark or any other resort for that matter. I would suggest a loaded OKW resale, maybe a smaller contract to start, you can add on later if you need. Yes your children are older but you/they will still find time to vacation every 2-3 years as you bank, borrow, manage your points. I have friends from England who successfully do this very thing. Best of luck with your decision .
